  1. Ok heres the deal..... 84 4wd wagon. It sometimes hesitates in the lower rpms from idle to about 2 grand. While it does this the engine shakes and stumbles but it hasn't ever died, the whole car shakes when this is happening. It does it in gear and when just idling. Then just as suddenly as it was shaking and sputtering, it will go away and run fine sometimes for a couple days. It doesn't do it in the upper rpms. It feels like its missing or running on one less cylinder maybe. I looked under the hood to check to make sure the spark plug wires were all connected tight but besides that I'm hopeing you guys have some suggestions.
  2. Besides the risk of breaking the timing belt and smoking the engine is there any pros/cons to the phase II 2.2? Say I got a 99 legacy with the 2.2, as long as I make sure the timing belt is changed on time I should be fine?
  3. I'm just kinda throwing around ideas right now. I really want a WRX but like you guys said it might be hard to find one in good shape and the insurance would kill me. Getting a brand new subie is very appealing but I really don't want to have a car payment and like one of you said it isn't exactly the best thing to be doing with my money. These last few years of driving around the 84 have saved me a considerable amount (some of which has been invested). Right now I'm considering getting something with a 2.2. When was the last year the legacy had a 2.2 in it?
  4. So I've driven the same 84 subie wagon around since I was 16. Its been really a great ride and it taught me alot about car repair. It has saved me thousands by being cheap to operate and has hardly broken down. I'm thinking after this next summer when I get back from Alaska with some more cash I might try and replace her. What are you thoughts? Part of me wants to drive this car till the tranny or engine or something major goes. The other part of me wants to get a new subie before I'm forced to. New Subies I'm considering..... 02 WRX wagon Brand new Legacy or Outback a vehicle with the 2.2 in it What are used WRXs going for? I haven't really looked into it. What price are brand new or nearly brand new Outbacks and Legacys going for? What is the newest year vehicle I can get with the 2.2?Other good years? Thoughts on what the best vehicle would be? I go skiing and camping frequently and like wagons because I can fit more stuff in them.
  5. So I tried the paperclip trick and the fan turned on so now I'm going to just ground that wire for the trip home. It will turn on when I turn the key on right?
  6. I'm pretty sure my fan is electric. I'm going to go outside and try the paperclip trick to see if its the fan or the temp sensor.
  7. So you bend the paper clip so it is touching the temp stat and what?
  8. I tried the search function but it didn't really answer my question. I've got an 84 subie wagon that been parked for about the last month while I've been at school and I started it up today and drove it to the store and it ran fine but while sitting in traffic for a minute or two I noticed the temp getting higher then normal and then I noticed that the fan wasn't coming on. It didn't overheat but it was climbing until I started moving and then it went back to normal. Whats an easy way to test to see if the fan is good or if its the sensor? I need to drive this beast home to Spokane next week and I don't want it overheating on me. It seems like as long as I don't get stuck in traffic I should be fine. I also don't have hardly any tools over here with me, and I'm not very good with electrical problems so you might have to get pretty basic with me. It has a newer radiator, waterpump and thermostat so I don't think their the problem. Thanks
  9. I don't know anything about the car. I just saw it one day awhile back while driving somewhere and went around the block to get another look at it. The bright blue paint is what caught eye in the first place. My friend who was in the car with me at the time thought I was crazy to go around the block to get another look at an old subie.
  10. I think I saw the car your talking about. Its been about a month ago but I remember is being really bright blue with some cool looking rims. I can't remember if it had round headlights but it was a wagon.
  11. no the leads to the coil one is yellow and the other is black with white stripes
  12. when the car is turned to on all engine check and lights are on but when i go to turn the engine on there is no firing and at the battery there are sparks we have tried the leads both ways an it does not seem to make a diffrince. also the the car is turned all the way on(trying to start) and the windsheild wipers start to go when they are turned off. i don't know what to look for any help would be nice. thanks
  13. dustyrider I'm living on campus in the Highland Dorms up on the ridgeway. carfreak next time I see you I'll definately give you a honk or something. I always try to wave to fellow ea-81's and older if they look like they might know whats going on.
  14. Yeah thats my subie. Runs pretty well but has some rust issues. I mtn. bike a little but I didn'y bring my bike over so I guess not. Do you ski/ board at all? Is you tan hatch a 4wd or 2wd? I saw a tan hatch yesterday on campus but it was 2wd???
  15. I'll have to keep my eyes out too. Just moved over to Bellingham from Spokane. Seen lots of subies. If any of you guys see a white 84 wagon with lots of stickers on it and a ski rack feel free to say high. I don't post much on the message board but its helped keep my car running for the last 5 years. dustyrider what year/ model is your subie? Does anyone know who drives the red turbo wagon 80-84? It has wcss stickers on it and I've seen it around campus??
  16. My axle nut was a little loose so I tightened it and I think the problem is solved! Thanks
  17. Heres the deal: 84 wagon, when I turn the steering wheel more then about half a turn either way I get a scraping/ dragging noise coming from the passenger side front wheel. I did some tests the other day and its makes the noise while turning in first or second gear or if I'm in neutral and just coasting while still turning. If I go into third gear I think I'm going to fast to turn tight enough and the road noise kinda drowns out the noise I'm listening for. If I hit the brakes it goes away some of the time. Its definately speed related because as you slow down so does the scraping noise. Any ideas? I check the front axles and I don't see any torn boots but could that still be the problem? Maybe wheel bearings?
  18. I had the exact same thing happen to me when replacing my oil pump. I just took the pump back off and then used vice grips to grab broken bolt. It came out really easily since the bolt broke with me hardly tightening it. Then go to the hardware store and get new bolts. Don't worry it should come out easily.
  19. I was just looking at my records and the last time I changed the tranny fluid on my subie was about 20K ago. When I changed it last I used Redline 75W-90NS. Its an 84 wagon 4wd with the 4spd, what do you guys think? Leave it in or change it out?
  20. I still need all the parts for the rear disk conversion. I found one 4wd turbo subie at Pull-and-Save but the rear disks and calipers were in horrrible shape.
  21. I tried to unbolt one today and one of the two bolts just broke right off! I even sprayed some pentrating lube in there and tried to be gentle with it.
  22. Well I went to Pull-and-Save today but I couldn't get all the stuff I needed to do the rear disk brake conversion. So I still need to deal with the fact that my rear drums are way out of adjustment and I can't get the adjusters to move.(its an 84 4wd wagon) Does anybody no the part # for these adjusters? Is it a dealer only part or maybe NAPA or Schucks? Thanks.
  23. Thanks for the replies, is PNS open on the weekends? If its open on Sunday I might try to make it there tomarrow. Sounds like I can do this project, one thing I'm worried about is will I have to bleed the brakes? I've never done that before but I don't think it will be that hard.
  24. I've done the front brakes on my subie before so maybe I'm qualified? So I need the backing plate, rotors, calipers and the bolts to connect everything up? Do the brake lines match up?
