  1. OK, at the beginning of the year I lost 4th gear when I slammed a pothole pretty good. Inspection showed the shift linkages looked fine. Did find a bad tranny mount and just had time to replace it (finally). I still don't have 4th, can select when stopped, grind syncro when moving. Any ideas where my problem is? 1996 Legacy Wagon 2.2? 5 speed Jay
  2. I hit a deep pothole a couple months ago and really tweeked the front end. It is hard to get it to shift into 4th and when I do it won't stay there, not nearly as bad in third, can hold it in place. Today was the first chance I had to look at it. Shift rods, bushings look ok. I almost think it could be the rear mount. The trans could be hanging low and not allowing the shifter enough throw. I cralled under and it looks like there is a gap between the mount and the wings bolted to the trans. Sound like I'm on the right track? First Legacy wagon '96. TIA, Jay
  3. OK, So I think I can get some lift for my daily driver with Outback struts. Since I have 14 inch wheels I thought I'd look for 14 inch tires first. I found Toyo Open Country ATs that are 225/70R14. Would these fit (I don't need to worry about chains in SoCal desert)? Next choice would be some other 14s or possibly 15s. What other tires do you reccomend for 14s (I want an agressive tread)?
  4. That was my first impression (Wheels/tires), but with this being my first awd, I wanted to be sure there wasn't something else to look for. Thanks guys
  5. 1996 Legacy Wagon 2.2L 173K miles 5 spd AWD This is new to me by about 2 weeks. (Read another thread that mentioned tires) Drove the freeway twice and seems good until 70 mph then it feels like wheels are out of balance or something. Seems to be mostly right front, left front was low on air when I got it and didn't get a chance to air up right away. What is the diagnosis? Anyone recommend a mechanic in Orange County, CA?
  6. Just noticed my posting was moved to "New Generation of Subarus" My guess is that anything 1990 and newer is the New Gen. Is there a chart of models, definitions of all the "codes" I see looking around the site? Seeing a ton of info as I slowly peruse the site, just trying to make heads or tails of things.
  7. My second Subaru, only have about 50 miles driving so far. 173K miles and I think the timing belt was done last year. I will go thru everything before the trip. Any Subaru parts that I should carry as spares? What's the biggest tire that works without interfering? This will be my daily driver and weekend mountain driver, no real offroad stuff, then again I have taken a Pinto and Tercel on "4x4 only" roads (it's all in the driving).
  8. Just got my awd wagon and plan to get alot of use out of it. Planning a 2700 mile round trip this summer and want to set it up right. I plan to do alot of camping, hunting, fishing with this one. First questions: Can I change the wheels to 15 inch (stock 14s now), if so what tires do you recommend for the above usage? Where is a good place to find parts and/or a mechanic when needed? I am in Orange County, CA. I plan to set it up with a cargo box on top and a full size spare hangin off the back. BTW I like heavy duty trucks and I'm building a vintage 1 ton truck that will look like an old tow truck. I would like to have a somewhat agressive looking tire. Jay
