  1. It is the u-joints on my GL that have failed. There is a tiny 'hitch' in the rear-most joint. While most likely not recommended by Subaru, I have been driving it with the rear half of the driveshaft laying on the garage floor...smooth as silk. Thanks for all your help. Now if I can figure out these staked u-joints!
  2. Thank you, Gentlemen. Your help on this board has been invaluable to helping me resurrect a GL that has sat for 10 years. I will post some pics this week when I'm officially 'done' and driving it daily.
  3. '86 GL 4x4 Sedan automatic- Maybe it's a newbie question, and I don't care, I'm a newbie at 50 to Subies and in one short year now own 4 I like them so much. Situation: Huge vibration through out vehicle at 25 mph and above. Question: Can I remove the driveshaft and 'take it out of the system' and still drive the car? It's probably a piss poor way to trouble shoot the u-joints in the driveshaft, but.... I do not know how to troubleshoot the cv joints on the rear axles either. There is no clicking or anything and they seem 'tight' to the touch/shake/pushing up & down. Is the solution 'throw dollars at new parts' and see what happens? LOL, it's been done before. Thanks. Doug, 50 year old newbie
  4. Do I need to drop the rear diff. to get the fuel tank out of an '86 GL 4x4? The car has a massive shuddering coming from the rear at anything above 25 mph. Up to that point it's quiet and smooth. The previous owner pulled the car with all tires on the ground and took no special precautions. Has my rear diff eaten its' lunch? I drained the fluid and found no filings or chunks in it. Any help always hugely appreciated. Doug in ABQ
  5. I am headed to buy a carb kit for my '86 GL EA82, but can only find these numbers on the body of the carb "23-29". The numbers on the NAPA site are like 9 letters and digits long. Could be just aging eyesight... any help always appreciated. Doug
  6. Should the crankshaft pulley on my '86 GL EA82 have a key or a pin that centers/holds pulley in place to the crank? My basket case didn't have one and now my crank pulley came loose using just the bolt and washer (no pin/key) while running the engine.
  7. '86 GL carb 4x4 auto. What exactly is attached to the fuel line that disappears into the fuel tank to feed the pump? Is there a screen hooked to the line or what? I fear whatever it is it's clogged on my GL. The car sat 8 years. The fuel pump doesn't run either unless I am actuating the starter. With the key turned to 'on' the pump doesn't run. Even when it does run while cranking the engine, it gets no fuel out of the tank. Help?
  8. Sweet! That will be Sunday's project. You should write repair manuals if you don't already. Many thanks.
  9. Does anyone have a link to a step-by-step guide for installing the timing belts from ground zero? It's VERY possible the distributor as been pulled out and installed incorrectly, the plug wires might be off a tower or two, and the guy I bought it from installed new timing belts but never got it to run again (probably incorrectly, eh!?!) Well, it was cheap anyway! I am totally confused (nothing new there) by the Haynes Manual saying when the center of the 3 marks on the flywheel is lined up, the rotor should be pointing at plug wire #1. Umm, shouldn't the rotor be pointed at plug wire #1 when the 'ignition timing mark of 0 degrees @ tdc' is lined up with pointer on the bell housing, not the valve timing mark? Confusion reigns king currently. '86 GL 4x4 automatic
  10. 8 miles BUT all I see to switch from/to 4 wheel drive is a red button on the auto trans shift lever. If this is electrically controlled and it has a dead battery...if I stick it in neutral and don't push the red button in, am I then in FWD? Thanks, I appreciate your input
  11. I need help fast! LOL. I just bought an '86 4x4 GL with automatic transmission and I need to tow it home (does not run). What is the proper way to tow it? Can I use a dolly and what precautions do I need to take? TIA. Doug in ABQ
