  1. a couple things....an 01 Outback is going to be bigger in nearly every dimension compared to a 95 Legacy.....without listing any source, I can tell you that. I am sure the dimensions are somewhere on google or something... They also never had a "V6" of any kind....maybe an H6?! good luck, Jeff
  2. Its pretty tough to get them too tight....chances are the smoking is from slipping, from being too loose. Tighten it up!
  3. Well, the owner called me back....and she still has the car. Supposedly it runs well, idles smooth, and starts up everytime she has tried it. She got it from her sister and brother in law, who have had it in Southern Oregon its entire life. She says she thinks it has dual range 4x4, but not 100% sure. I asked about the body, and she says it has some minor nicks, scratches, and minor dents, but no major damage. I will be checking it out in a few days.....thanks for the input, folks!
  4. All good ideas guys....thanks! I called the owner, but havent talked to them in person. I will most likely look at the car early next week, if its still for sale (local, but still 85 miles away)..... So, how many were dual range 4x4, and how many were just regular 4x4?
  5. Hey all, Jeff here from Klamath Falls.....a newb to older subarus, but not to cars, or Subarus totally. I have a couple of Legacys that I beat around in off road, but have been keeping a look out for an older hatch. Guy locally has an 85 GL Hatch 4x4 for sale, and supposedly it runs well, is all there, and needs a clutch and some tlc. He is asking $250 for it, with 220k miles on it......my questions: 1. What to look for? 2. Good price? 3. Is this a good candidate for an EJ22 swap? 4. Do all of these with 4x4 have the dual range setup? thanks in advance, Jeff
  6. lol.....funny question. I dont think I would ever change the gear oil.....come on, they put that stuff in there, but its a subaru! Ok...all sarcasm aside...yes, change it. Just like ANY differential, changing the gear oil out is pretty critical. Keeping the bearings cool, and clean is the oils job, and chances are, it needs changed. Dumb not to..... I used 80/90 in my diffs, in my Legacy.

  8. awesome photos! We got a lil bit of snow here in Klamath Falls, but nothing like you guys have in the mountains. I did some donuts in a parking lot, and messed around out in an off road area close to my house yesterday. No chance of getting stuck, but pretty slippery. A guy I was following up a slight grade spun out, and actually slid back down into my Legacy. Bent up his bumper on one end, but didnt even scratch my old beater! Keep the pics a comin!
  9. Very cool project.....keep us updated on it! I needed this, and a good skidplate, but I have already mangled my front cross member enough to make it a debateable project. Maybe on my next Subaru!
  10. lol...thanks for the comments guys. Yeah, we put a new strap to hold the hood down, and it works very well. I also got a new battery hold down at the you pull it junkyard today, so that will be more secure too (had a bungee on it previously, and it bounced around more than I wanted it to). Yep, slowly it will get better, before it gets thrashed some more... Yes, I was concerned for the atv rider, as he had no helmet. I could have passed him anywhere, but figured the asphalt back stretch was best....his buddies were whooping and hollering as I passed him, and they thought the old legacy was pretty cool....
  11. I am not 100% sure about a later legacy and outback (96-99 years), but the later outback springs were different than the early legacy. I swapped them over, with the only legacy parts used were the rear top hats. Here are some more pics: These are the rear struts/springs. The strut body is longer, and it appears that the spring is longer/taller too. I was told that the Outback set I bought from a wrecking yard were indeed from a wagon. It makes sense to me that the springs would be bigger/longer on a wagon, designed to haul more of a load than a regular Legacy sedan, even if they were similar vintage. Here are the front struts/springs. The strut body is longer, but appears that the springs are similar, if not the same.
