  1. it's a 99 forester awd w/ 130,000mi i'm looking to pull the trans in the next day or 2.
  2. My transmission just locked & I creeched to a stop while I was driving down the road. All 4 wheels locked. All of the sudden while I was driving it started learching, a little like a clutch spring was broken, then it whent away. A mile or so later it happened again only worse. I imediatly put the clutch in, and i slowly lurched to a stop. I started to again and the learching was gone....for a couple hundred feet, and started learching again. I put it in nutural this time, and it slowly learched to a stop. I started of again and again no problems, and once i got up to speed.......SLAM!!!!!......everything locks up and I skid to a stop. The engine is still running, and no codes, but the car won't roll at all. I get it home and I get all 4 wheels off the ground the front wheels spin oposite eachother, & the back wheels spin oposite eachother. Can anyone tell me what would make this transmission fail so dramaticly & with so little warning?

  4. not someone other than me................ all i see on this board is how much the ej25 sucks, and you should replace it with a ej22. i would just like to hear from the ej25 side. bought a 99 forester phase II ej25 with a bad head gasket. i'm going to drive it around for a while before i tear it apart. i wanted to know if the're really that bad and if it would be wise to modify and upgrade, or just junk it and get a 2.2.
  5. finaly, someone from the other side of the coin!!!!!! i'd like to hear more from this side.
  6. DUH...........t h a t m a k e s s e n c e................ i'm a dumb a$$. it has one cam sprocket, SOHC phase II. thanks for the kick in the head.:-\
  7. it's defenetly a 99, but the 99 foresters have both the DOHC & the SOHC engins. i've been trying to recerch whitch one i have, but have come up dry. are there any visual indications that destinguish the two? or do i have to take the valve cover off?
  8. thanks for all the info. i got a cheap 99 forester with a oil leak on the front of the engine, and possible bad head gasket. nothing comes out of the tailpipe on start up, but i can see little bubles coming up when i give it gas the radiator cap off. i'll drive it around this week, and maybe next to see how it acts, then start disassebly.
  9. thanks for the info, i'm looking to buy a doner vehicle to drive around for a little while, then gut the drive train to put in a project i'm building. my question may not have a solid answer, but i would like to hear of some of the experiences of other people have had so i can weigh my options
  10. i've been seeing a lot of 2.5's out there for good prices, and was wandering, how bad are the ej25? do all of them over heat and blow head gaskets eventually, or is it just a comon problem. how difficult is it to remove the head on a ej25, is it a few hours or a 4 day weekend job? a mod that i would like to do is a ej25 whith ej22 heads, would that have the same inherant head gasket problems? just a few things rateling around my head. thanks i just posted this on another thead, i thought it might get a few more looks here.
  11. no, you miss understood what i was tryint to say. the ads that i saw said "fwd/awd", like it does both. my question was, what does fwd/awd mean? is it a duel function trans, or is it a typo? i'm sorry if i was unclear, i'm completely new to the subie world and have no idea what's out there.
  12. i was looking @ the early 90's legacy, but all of the ads say fwd/awd. i don't know what that means. i'm looking for full time awd, is the early 90's legacy is full time awd? i like the idea of the EJ22 w/EJ25 heads, that's right up my ally. i can start with a stock EJ22 and upgrade the heads and boost it once i get all of the bugs worked out. to answer your questions, i do live in the L.A. area, i do want a manuel trans, i don't think i could ever have enough HP, and yes i am good with wiring (it's just a pain in the a$$).
  13. i was concidering the awd civic, but they are few and far between. i like subaru's, so i would like to use that drive train. the only issues i'm having are the distance from the front driveshafts to the front of the motor(i don't know how far back i can move the engine & trans back whithout getting into drive line issues), and what doner vehicle to steel the drive train from. i'm looking for a non-computer controled transmission, and i'm not sure when they started with that.
  14. i'm still looking for a doner vehicle. i'm looking for a full time 4wd trans and a motor that i can turbo later on when the power need arives. is there such a thing? any suggetions?
