  1. Hey! I was wondering if I could get more input from you about the swap, How much work did you need to do to make room for you geolanders? Did you see my current pictures? Do you think 205 75 15 would work?

    Thanks

  2. Hey! Thanks for the advice on my subaru. I went forward with my strut swap and spent some time documenting it on the board. I'd really appreciate your feedback. I'm sorry to say the lift is kinda sucking right now, and I don't know I'll even be able to get tires like yours onto it. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

  3. lets see...... prices are rounded somewhat.

    Trans - $70

    Clutch - $120

    Flywheel - $20

    Driveshaft - $50

    Tires - $500

The tires were the worst part. I did all the labor myself minus getting the flywheel resurfaced. I filed out the flywheel to bolt up to my trans by hand (MUCH better to have a machine shop drill the holes out). Also, I rebuilt my trans and swapped the axle stubs for the bigger sized ones so my stock axles would still work.

If you just go for a lift and not crazy offroad you might want to consider top hat spacers. Relatively inexpensive and they perk the cars ride a bit. My buddy ran then in his newer impreza with some general grabber tires and the thing looked mean. The lift itself wouldn't kill the life of the car. swapping out the trans makes it a little different, and offroading it might hurt it a little also. But just make sure to do regular up-keep and you should be good to go.

  4. I'm actually selling my car to a buddy and just got a toyota 4runner... haha
  5. I have a 97obs, even same color and want to do exactly what you've had done.

First, thank you for sharing your details. What a tremendous help.

Can I ask you a few questions about the build?

First- How much did it cost you? I see you hit the yards...and What do you think if I were to find a mechanic and buy the parts new?

Second- I just inherited my momed out obs. Would be so very happy to turn it into something like you've got. But reluctant to compromise the car too much. It runs great at 100k miles.

Do you think your lift job will seriously kill the life of the sub?

I don't offroad too often, and would be very pleased to get another 100k out of the vehicle.

Willing to put a few k into the project, but hoping it won't turn into a money pit.

  6. Pretty sure mine came from that generation of legacy (95-99). If you can make it to a junkyard and measure the length of the shock tube that might help you know how much lift (approx) you will get. The springs should help some since an outback is a tad heavier than your impreza.
  7. little inspiration. outback struts and 215/75r15 geolanders. Even with my stock tires I liked having the bigger bracket to keep the rear wheels centered. Also, I haven't had a rear sway bar for.... almost a year and I do probably 90% on road driving and its fine, bit of body roll but not near as much as my 4runner has with the swaybars.
  8. Sorry, I don't get on here as often as I used to. Those struts should work well for you. The height I am not 100% sure. I never did any measuring I just threw them on, and I could fit my tires so I was happy. You will have to use your stock rear top hats and you will need a spacer on the top of the shock cylinder (I used a washer and filed the opening a bit bigger). The fronts should (should!) bolt right up. The lateral link bracket will help bring your rear tires back a bit more centered in the wheel well but even with those I still had to massage (beat the living crap out of) the paneling right behind the rear doors to fit my 215/75r15 tires. Hopefully this helps you some.

  9. i am new to the subaru world. i just bought a 97 impreza OBS and i was reading up on your build with the outback struts and springs. i was looking to do the same thing. i found a 1996 outback in the local junkyard and was wondering if this was just a simple swap?? i read that i may have to use my factory rear tophats and like someone mentioned in your build to use outback trailing arm brackets. is that about it??? and exactly how much lift should a gain? any info you can give will be greatly appreciated!!!

  10. I totally forgot about this and never got my pics of Gir into the running... oh well. Glad to see some sweet rigs make it into the second round.
  11. Hey glad to help. Wish I had to drive to do more with it, but all money is going into saving for a house downpayment and diapers... bleh.
  12. It handles decent on the freeway surprisingly. I just have no need to take it on the freeways. If I make abrupt turns or corrections I REALLY feel the bugger sway.
  13. Stock front sways, no rear sway bar at all. I only drive in town mostly so the body roll doesn't bother me at all.
  14. The Yokohama geolander at/s I have on my OBS have been awesome. Ahd almost a year with bad camber and such and they have very little wear on them. Great winter traction (pulled a few people out of some snow banks this last winter) surprisingly quiet on the road, and good traction off the beaten path. I have gone on light duty offroading with mine and they have performed admirably.
  15. I have no rear sway bar and the handling is... ok. I wouldn't recommend autox thats for sure! For around town its fine. On the freeway it gets a little squirly but not too bad. I do not have camber bolts in my rear and I haven't checked my alignment because frankly, I am too cheap and I hardly drive the car as it is with fuel costs lately and the fact I work too much. I need to get some sometime I just keep hearing that they have a tenancy not to be as solid. Maybe people were wrong tho. I used my stock impreza top hats which bolted right up with the addition of a washer added. I will post pics later today about the spacing problem with the top hat or you can find my build thread.
