  1. Thanks for your concern guys, Yeah its absolutely temporary for sure. The ones online are made for oil pans of all kinds but i had to just get it fixed asap so i went with the marine one as it was the only one i could find at the stores in that size. I really just need it to get me through the next two weeks. Then ill have time for a more permanent fix or pan swap. But i will say for being in a bind, a $5 part and really no prep work or install time to speak off, Its done its job and got me out of a serious pinch. Its really snug in there. Ill be watching it very closely though. robm, I like that idea thanks
  2. The damage.. Looking at this pic i don't know how i didn't notice a previous repair there either The plug. One on the left. You can tighten the inside washer thing before you put it in and clamp it down so you can make it a pretty tight squeeze before hand. The ones i found online looked like they'd be an even better fix Put about 30mi on it today and its still dry. I know the lever style is not ideal, but its in there pretty darn good. even if the lever flips up it will probably still stay in there a while.. I'll just keep my eye on it.
  3. Thank you JesZeK. That did cross my mind. Ive been trying not to put too much money into the engine besides all the regular matanince, because I plan on Ej swaping it.. but ive been saying that for 5 yrs haha.. what can i say, shes a tropper. So I fixed it! at least for now shes holdin up good. After I pulled the skid plat off there, and was able to see what was actually going on, It was definatly a JY puncture. It looked like somebody shot a fat slug in it. It was a perfectly round concave hole. I messured it with my caliper and it was about .45in. I could tell the oil pan was very thin, as mentioned, so i did some more research and came across expandable oil plugs. pretty much just two washers that compress rubber to plug a hole. I need my car to get to work in the morning so i drove (in my ladys car) to just about every store insearch of one thats a half inch. These things are common in bigger sizes but hard to find that small, and needing it tonight i had to settle with an lever style one. I tightned it down a bit, squeezed it in there, clamped the lever, and filled it up. I let it run for about 15min and it stayed dry. then i took on a test drive, went up a big hill, took it home and YES! still dry as a bone on the plug. I'll be watching it like a hawk, and if it starts to fail i'll do the overall right thing as a few of you said and just replace the pan.. I guess worst case is it bought me some much needed time. If it fails im sure youall will hear about it. Thank you everybody for helping mee get through this. I really hope this works out and somebody else can find this thread, and fix usefull. we"ll see what happens! Dang i took pictures but i guess i have to host them. Ill figure it out soon as they ilistrate what i did, and what i was dealing with
  4. Hey everybody, im back in town. im going to clean it up in a bit after i unwind and see what im working with here. i would just swap the pan if i had one here but id prob have to find one at the yard, which would be difficult as i work, or have school every day.. and then theres the fact of the one from the bone yard might be punched out as well. and my gasket dosent leak one drop so if i can do an in-place fix, then as gary put it, id be golden. thanks for all the sugestions. im leaning towards the bolt with an o ring as i have LOTS laying around. ill be back on in a bit with my findings. Maybe ill just chew up some gum and stick that in there.. it works on leaky dams right?
  5. Just checked out the rivnuts.. Im starting to think that may have been what was in there originally but im not sure. I wish i would have known somthing was there though. i could have been keeping tabs on it, or keeping it tight, if thats what it was.
  6. Oh elite master of the subaru, thank you. The only piece i found was the small rubber grommet with a hole in the center. Thats what i was thinking about trying anyways as those are really my only options. I dont have a welder or the skills to do anything like that. Im going to clean it all up real good to see exactly what im working with, then tap and thread in a bolt with a crush washer. The tack weld part may have to wait. Hmm those rivnuts are interesting, i may go that route, but i have to do a little more research to see what id be in for exactly. Thanks grossgary, i really appreciate it. I'll fill you guys in somtime tomorrow evening with what i come up with. Im the meantime any other comments, experiences, or sugestions would be great.
  7. Thanks everyone. i think you guys are miss-understanding a bit. its my engine oil pan. literally like two inches from the drain plug. its engine oil on the ground. Not the trans at all. i cant take a pic till tomorrow because im outa town today for the holiday. Scott, you seem to know what im taliking about. what is it? and if the wrecking yard put it there, do you know how they pluged it originally? Im in a jam with this thing and im wondering how it somehow held for years till ultimatly failing. Anybody know if i can thread a bolt in there? Thanks again guys this is a pretty weird thing. im super stumped. Thanks Jonas, its hard not to notice a mirrior like reflection under my whole car haha. im just glad it happened when i got home, and not on my way home. Scott please elaborate if your able. Thanks!
  8. So after a long day at school on tuesday, i came out to my car after an hour or so of being home, to find a huge puddle of oil under my car. Puddle is an understatement.. it was ALL of the engines oil... Nooo! I grabed my head lamp and got under there thinking the worst. What i found was odd. The normal drain plug (the 17mm at an angle twards the passenger side) was dry as a bone, however, there was a second hole just beyond it, where all the oil had poured out along with the remains of what appeared to be a rubber grommet dangling from the hole. What is this hole? Its just behind the "normal" drain plug and is pointing straight down. what was supposed to be there? Ive worked on these alot and have even replaced oil pans and oil pan gaskets and i have never noticed this second hole before. Anybody know what this is or how i should plug it? Beleive it or not the cork gasket dosent leak and i dont want to replace the pan and go through that whole ordeal if i dont have to. Thanks for taking the time to read and your potential response. I did alot of searching and found no mention of this "second" hole or whatever it is. -1989 NA / EA82 5MT 4wd wagon Thanks!
  9. I had a 91 loyale that i would drive up to mt hood about 30 to 40 days a season, sometimes more (yeah i like to ride for like 8 years straight. I ended up doing the head gaskets and stuff twice during that time but the car was a BEAST in the snow.. all you have to do is push the 4wd button and go. you find yourself passing cars with 2 times the horsepower regularly. mt hood gets the same kind of crazy dumping deep and sometimes very heavy snow and the car has never been stuck in the snow.. even when i come back to the lot and its surounded by 2 feet of wet snow it pulls right out after just a couple rocking motions.. i always carry chains and i have never once had to use them.. they're over10 years old and still brand new haha. put that dual range in and you'll really love it! but its pretty fun to drift slowly into the snow covered fast lane, push the button, and pretend its an after burner as you start to pass everybody driving slow on the pavement/rock/slush haha.. only on straight aways and where its legal of course in my experience the lsd seemed abit more unpredictable in the snow.. fun and drifty but kinda easy to end up sideways. the single range just seemed more constant and solid.. if you lost control it seemed easer to correct. just my opinion dont get me wrong.. i love lsd's.. any subaru 4wd system is top notch in my book. you should be fine with the cold temps and snow.. carry chains and ALWAYS bring some jumper cables. I like to put something on the rubber door gaskets so they dont freeze to the body, if not when you finaly get the frozen door open, the rubber sticks to the door jam and rips it right out of the bottom of the door.. seen it multiple times on multiple cars. also some no freeze type key hole lubracant will save you many head aches and quite possibly a broken key.. as far as defrost.. it wont fully clear till you start moving.. gotta love that NW pow. i have a squeegee i use on the inside and it speeds up the process dramatactly.
  10. sounds like a junkyard part to me.. Thats what i had to do years ago on my loyale, and more recently on a legacy. both worked great with no problems
  11. Thanks so much guys! funny about the rotor screw.. it was the first thing i checked as i have also had this happen to me more than once in my loyale haha. stubby screwdriver is key for that thing. so my starter was making the weird off time sound as described. after reading your replies i was positive its the timing so i decided to just tackle it. sure enough the passenger side belt had like seven missing teeth in a row!!!! and was super cracked. the other was a different brand and had been replaced which is stupid because you have to take the bad one off to get to it. someone before me was one cheep dude for sure considering those belts are not expensive haha. well four hours later in the cold rain and shes alive and running like a champ! you guys rock! While I'm at it and we're in here.. anyone have any ideas/input about the codes i mentioned in my original post? i still throw em. Thanks again everybody! so stoked to be cruising the rx again!
  12. So a week or so ago i started my car no problems and drove out of the parking lot and about 15 seconds later it started running like crap like it was only firing on a couple of cylinders or worse and clunking pretty hard but it still drove. it was early on a cold wet morning. i drove it for a minuet later down the hill to the flats where it continued to drive like crap till i pulled over and it just died. haven't been able to start it since. i have inspected everything i can think of. its getting spark at all plugs and its definitely getting fuel from what i can tell, even sprayed some start stuff in the throttle. it turns over just fine, but wont start. as far as codes go, it had no new ones. it was throwing a knock sensor code and a water temp sensor code about a year ago and i replaced both but they both came back shortly after and still get thrown. could this be related? the car still ran fine. did a timing belt jump a tooth? i can feel the belts and they seem tight and intact.. fuel injector clog? im stumped! any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! its a 1987 RX turbo mt fulltime4wd EA82t.
  13. I love those old soob's, get it! You rarely ever see those
  14. Thanks Zap. I'm really bummed i missed the last one, it was so close to me! You know i will be there next year. some of those sub's in the pictures are amazing:banana:
  15. Hey i have been checkin this site out for years now and i'm finally a member. I just never really had my own computer. I owe almost all my subaru knowledge to this site other than service books and trial and error. There is so much great info on here, its great! I bought my Loyale in 2001 with 156K and it now has 270k. I have replaced about every part, head gaskets, timing belts, axles, bearings... Even re-built the front end after it was wrecked, its a GREAT car! Last year i bought my first project, get ready... 1989 GL Touring wagon (yes raised roof) 5spd for $400! The plan is a EJ swap (of course) and a 3.5 lift with pug 15" turbo rims (got two already) yada yada... And last but not at all least is the 1989 RX..hehe got it about 7 moths ago, im pumped. Glad to be a member!
