  1. Hello, I have a JDM 2.0 turbo (98 era) that im using the lower end for a potential (2005) 2.5 forester turbo bad engine fix. I need to swap the heads. Does anyone know how to source the JDM HG? Its the same style HG (composite) as an early 2.2.
  2. Thanks everyone ... All the cars that are having this issue sat for some time. So im guessing its a vent /tank issue. I will investigate on some tanks i have to figure out how to "free" the stuck valves. THANKS AGAIN
  3. get a used subaru alternator at a JY. ANY electrical stuff from the box parts stores is JUNK. If you can find a local rebuilder use them.
  4. i would do the belt, water pump and idler pulleys. Also just take the whole radiator out with fans attached.
  5. you should be OK just get a new balancer/cover and reassemble.. I would take timing cover off and make sure no debris is in there. Ive seen this a couple times.
  6. I have a customer (actually a couple of customers) that is/are having an issue with getting the tank to fill. This is an 03 forester 2.5 sohc. When they go to fill up the pump keeps cutting off like the tanks full. I did a quick filler neck swap ( a good used one) and it has the same issue. Could it be a vent hose that isn't letting the tank pressure vent? Any help is much appreciated.
  7. Hey fellow mechanics, I am wondering if anyone knows the difference in the 2007-2008 2.5 SOHC engine vs the 2009-2010 2.5 SOHC. I have an 09 that needs a used engine and having a time finding one. The JY says there's a difference. I cant see one: electrical plugs, intake, etc all look the same. Thanks.
  8. And yes take the engine out of the car... only dumbass dealer mechanics doing these jobs under warranty do HG in the car or only do one side. There is no way to propperly clean and prep the engine mating surface while the engine is in the car.
  9. USE THE DEALER 2.5 TURBO GASKETS. Anything else and you are wasting your time. 11044aa642 is the part number. DONT USE ANY AIR TOOLS/WHIZZ WHEELS TO CLEAN HEAD OR BLOCK YOU WILL MAKE A WAVY MESS. Send the heads to a machine shop to be milled and have the valves checked. We have found that most of the time the exhaust are valves leaking and from time to time the guides are loose/bad. Spend the $ and get a valve job. LIghtly sand the block to head mating surface with 400 grit wet paper and a long flat sanding block... keep switching directions 45 deg at a time. this will keep you from sanding the surface unevenly. stuff rags in the cylinders to keep debris from getting in. Evergreen has decent stuff the also offer an awsome deal on waterpump, timing belt and idler pulleys. All high quality stuff. go to amazon and you'll find them. Take out the alignment pins before sanding. take a 12 mm bolt and grind it down until it fits inside the pin. then you can grab them with vice grips without destroying them. Twist up and down and they will walk out of th block. BE CARFUL NOT TO SCRATCH THE ENGE WITH THE VICE GRIPS... the aluminum is very soft and east to damage. on reinstallation flip them around so the marred surface will be inside the block and the smooth side will be out for the head to mate to. they stick out 1/2 inch
  10. thanks for the response.. ill check them out and see if "the ports" match up
  11. Its easiest and cheapest to just swap the whole cone assembly. All the 95-98 autos have that part. They don't fail that often so you have good odds that a junkyard part will work and last. GET A NEW PAPER SEAL. If not it will leak Been there :( Also pay attention to the parking "paw" and its spring when dissasembling. They like to fall out.
  12. in 04 they started adding the EGR back to the 2.5 sohc engines so you will have to swap the intake and drill/tap the head for the EGR pipe. there's already a small hole where you have to do this so its not too tricky.
  13. I have a question: when using the 2.5 turbo HG on a non turbo 2.5 sohc engine is there a difference between the two turbo gaskets offered? I have been using the 11044AA642 but they sold me a set of 11044AA770 which are for the STI engines. Is there any difference?
  14. Hey the group, I was writing to let you know about a brake upgrade that I have been doing on customers cars. If you run 16" wheels on your soob then you can upgrade to the larger rotors and bigger dual piston front calipers. i think the span on the parts is 04-07 outbacks. I ask for 04 outback at the parts store when im ordering parts. Try em out.. you'll notice the difference. Im running theis setup on my 99 limited and 02 wrx wagon.
  15. these injectors dont fail that often.. that would be the last thing i replace. If you can get a whole intake with injectors from a junkyard i would grab that and install. With this you will cover the injector and the wiring.
  16. I am building an 07 2.5 sohc... all the blocks i have are toast. Mainly trying to figure out if an 03 block and crank will work with the 07 pistons. Only good place is to look in the service manuals for those years. Most things (crank, rods, pistons) swap freely from 96-98 in the 25D. These will not swap into 99-later blocks. Pistons might, but not totally sure on that. 99 - later, the biggest change was with the crank, the thrust journal moved, and the rod bearing journals were bumped up from the 48mm to 52mm. That stayed mostly the same for about the next 10 years. People swap crank, rods, pistons from STI 255 turbo blocks into the 251 and 253 blocks fairly regularly.
  17. does anyone know where to find out the specs on different year 2.5 engines? need to know whats compatable between different year 2.5 lower ends. Trying to build some engines out of several bad ones. thanks
  18. thanks, Yeah mine is too far out of spec due to a spun bearing to be turned.
  19. Hello does anyone have a good used crank for a 2006 2.5 litre N/A engine or know of a good place to get one? Thanks
  20. Hello, I have a customer with a 2007 forester 2.5 sohc with a rod knocking. The customer also has a 2003 2.5 sohc that has a bad body and could be an engine donor. The idea is to build the 2007s engine out of the 2003 lower end. Doable? I know the heads and pistons are different but i can swap those. Are the stroke/bore the same? has anyone done this swap? Thanks
  21. I was just wondering if there was any preventive actions that were being taken to avoid this?
