  1. It's not starting. I tried holding the accelerator down as suggested to resolve the flooding. What's the best way to check for spark? Not sure about the clicking will have to listen tomorrow.
  2. Thanks for all the suggestions but still no start! I changed the fuel injectors, the mesh portions of the old ones looked dirty but it still didn't start. Then I noticed something strange. When I first turn on the ignition (ie first two seconds when the fuel pump kicks in) or whenever after the ignition is on and I press on the throttle, there's a "arrrrr" sound - something like a dud relay coming from the transmission! I can stop this noise by disonnecting one of the two large electrical harnesses to the transmission or the throtle position sensor. So I swapped the tps but still no start! I'm not sure why a problem in the tranny would stop it starting but who knows. Does anyone have any other clues?
  3. The times it wont start, I can try a number of times without success, until the battery's flat. Ocassionally I have pumped the accelerator and it's caught but generally not. Then I try the next day and it starts straight up.
  4. Help - My 92 legacy has an intermittent starting problem. The engine cranks, sometimes starts and other times wont. Once it starts, it runs fine. I have checked/ replaced a number of components including: wires, plugs, fuel filter, coil, cam sensor, crank sensor, battery, starter and fuel pressure regulator. None of them were obviously broken and the problem is not resolved. The check engine light is not on. Fuel pressure tests okay. Fuel pump turns on when ignition goes on. Have taken it to a Subaru mechanic and local mechanic and it started fine for them! Now it wont start in my garage and I'm out of ideas. Any suggestions on things to check? Thanks!
  5. Hello, I need new tires on my 92 legacy. The size is 185/70 R14. Costco says that Subaru recommends tires with an H speed rating. They only sell T and wont install them. T seems fast enough or is there more to the speed rating than just speed? I am currently running S with no problem. I certainly don't drive fast any more.... Does anyone have any advice? Thanks, Mick.
  6. It looks like the radiator cap was to blame. I changed the radiator cap this afternoon, bled the air and went for a long drive. The coolant level in the overflow tank only went up about 1 cm. So I think that was it, hopefully. thanks for the comments.
  7. I just swapped the engine in a 92 Legacy and used a new water pump and thermostat. I replaced the coolant and tried to be careful about bleeding the air i.e. lifted the front of the car, topped up the coolant, opened the drain screw on the passenger side, warmed it up, let it cool, and topped off the coolant again. Now when the car heats up the level of the coolant in the overflow tank slowly rises. I have not driven for extended periods yet. The longest was 20 minutes and the overflow tank just started to overflow. Any suggestions about what could be causing this? Would an air pocket in the engine do it? A small head gasket leak? (there doesn't appear to be bubbles in the coolant). Perhaps just a bad radiator cap? Any idea what is normal for the coolant level to rise as the engine heats up, if at all? Any comments much appreciated!
  8. I probably will just swap the harnesses. I was afraid there might be more differences but it doesn't appear there is.
  9. Josh, Someone told me that the local library has a subscription to Alldata so I just got back, after printing the engine wiring diagram for the '90. I am looking at Fig 28-2 from the '92 manual I downloaded from your site. It appears the '90 E3 connector was done away with and the wires were routed through '92 E2. "Most" of the other wiring is identical so I might try rewiring it. Hopefully the "minor" difference don't catch me out! I don't know if I answered your question about how to read the diagrams though... The E connectors are shown on the top of the page and the mating F connectors shown at the bottom of the page show how the wires match up with the connector. Thankyou very much for your help, and the downloads! Mick.
  10. You got it. Connector E3 is behind the battery and is on Fig97. The main figures that call out E1 and E2 seem to be Section 6-3 5.4 Fig 28-1, 28-2 for the non turbo. E3 is called out in Fig29-1&2 for the turbo. I guess I need to find the corresponding Engine Electrical diagram for the '90... Thanks yet again!
  11. Thanks for the wiring diagrams. They should help me get moving. I can now be more specific about the problem. My 92 2WD AT (non turbo) does not have connector E3 - it only has E1 and E2. This matches the wiring diagram as E3 is designated for Turbo. My 90 AWD MT (non turbo) has E1, E2 and E3. I don't have the wiring diagram for this one. Do you think I can take the 92 harness and install it on the 90 engine? There is a different number of wires so I'm wondering why and if the engine electrics are actually different. Thanks again. Mick.
  12. I am trying to put the engine from a 90 Legacy MT AWD into a 92 AT 2WD. The main wiring harness from the engines are different. The 90 has 3 connectors while the 92 has only 2. Can I modify the harness? Where do I get the wiring diagrams? Alldata or do I need to buy the Subaru factory manual? Or could I swap out the intake manifolds too and hopefully use the old harness (it seems to be connected to the manifold, injectors and various sensors.)? Any advice greatly appreciated!
