  1. the front brakes are all new. i may have installed them wrong though. i will have to give that a check. also I cant hear the sound while coasting around a corner at the same speed, only when accelerating ( on the gas ) i can feel the vibration/grinding in my feet and can hear it resonating through the cabin. i never heard this before i did the brakes and before the new axle was installed. this started to happen when i changed the bad axle for the new replacement axle. could this be the axle?
  2. UPDATE. i looked the tourqe specs up in my manual 145 lbs-ft i jaked the car up loosened up the nut and re-tourqued it to 145 lbs-ft and took it for a spin its still making noise:banghead: the reason i doubt it is the wheel bearing is because the thing was fine before the new axle was installed ( the old reman axle clunked ) after installing this new axle it dosn't clunk but acualy sounds like a rubbing grinding noise. this is pissing me off. i really don't know what else to check.
  3. Just picked up a 1/2drive 36mm socket...time to tourqe that sucker:banana:
  4. your probably right...about how im built..., yea i do need to get the right socket for that, i jsut don't want to strip the threads off the cheap remanufactured axle...aaa free replacement anyway.
  5. well i was gone all day and just got around to finding my problem. i jacked the front up, wiggled the wheel around i felt nothing abnormal. i tightened the axle nut it was already tight, and so was everything else. ( btw what size of socket is the axle nut. 35mm or something like that, i got it tight with a fatty cresent wrench but didn't have a socket to use with my tourqe wrench. oh oh and someting else i was noticing was whenreading about removing the cv it says over and over again that the axle is pressed into the hub or pressed into the bearings....why is it that you can remove them without the use of a press...they just slide right out. could this meen that i have defective bearings, wich by now i believe my bearings are the problem.
  6. I did some searching and found a little of what i was looking for but not all. I just got my 84 gl back o n the road and it noticed that the drivers side axle was shot. i replaced it with a new one ( remanufactured ) and it seemed to help the clunking sound found wht bad CV's THen i noticed a massive vibration in the seering wheel and went to get my tires re balanced ( they found the wheels are all a little warped ( bent ) after he put them back on i noticed that the vibration has nearly stoped and it is livable. now i find another problem i just cant seem to put my finger on. while turning left im feeling in my feet a rythmic vibration, when i unroll the window i can hear it. its not a constant humming like a wheel bearing would sound like ( my vw had a bad wheel bearing and it hummed on the highway ) this vibration is gone when your going strait and is not heard or felt while turning right, but going into a left hand bend it is felt. this vibration is not constant, and is only heard at around 25+ mph . I personaly think it is a wheel bearing but my dad seems to think differently ( he sais it could be the front diff ( doupt that ). can anyone help me out. i will try and pinpoint the noise. so far i know its on the drivers side ( as the passenger cant really hear it but rather feel it . holy cow this car was running fine when i dorve it in highschool. 2 years later its a pile. i just trying to get it going for college.
  7. my plan was initialy to use the stock monting brackets but mount a much sturdier bumper, in order to scrap the plastic that is all bent out of shape. i want to use the stock monting points to make it more simple and also i wanted to make it strong enough to add some usefull tow hooks if i need to use them, not thoes flimsy looking things on the car right now. I have some ideas on using the original brackets and welding them on to a pice of rectangular tubing or round steel tubing but im kinda stuck on how to make a good tow hook mounting point.
  8. Thnaks guys for the tips. I was planning on using the stock mounting points, possibly beef them up.
  9. it should be around 2-2.5 quarts...my manual dosn;t go back to 78 though.
  10. a good friend of mine has offered to help me make some nice bumpers for my 84 gl. right now they have thoes nasty plactic covered cheap ones and i don't like them. i have searched for different ideas and have come up with some nice looking custome bumpers, i just curious what type of steel i should be using, i kinda like the look of some of the square tubing used though i have also thought of tubular bumpers....has anyone done a tubular bumper yet or can i be the first one..., also i would like to add some nice tow hooks so i can pull people out of ditches or the other way around, the tow hooks that are on these don't seem very sturdy, they have worked for me in the past but im not sure who much tention they will take. anyone have some tips, Thanks.
  11. i know it comes in the new Forester....sadly we cant get the duel range tranny in the US...the US seems to get screwed over sometimes...it owuld be a nice option...oops off topic i use my hill holder, not all th time but it sure is nice to have at times.
  12. i finaly got the suby on the road and im ready to take it on some trails. i live in the seattle area and im wondering if there is any good off road areas. im not looking for extreame stuff. the car is stock but i just want some dirt roads or trails that i could explore. thanks if anyone can give me some ideas.
  13. i found the emblem on first gen wagon when i was out riding some trails with my mountain bike...it was trashed and stuck in a pile of blackberrys it had the 4wd symbol and the subaru emblem so i took them...this when i was like 14...years ago:)
  14. after a day of hunting i finaly found what i was after. suby exhast pic 1 suby exhast pic 2 i havn't clamped it on yet i still need to add one more mount so it fits a little more snug...and no making fun of the welds...it was my very first time welding:)
  15. well the first car i got to drive was this 84 suby wagon. my dad bought it off his boss for 500 bucks. it had a cracked head but still ran..sorta so we dorve it home...part way.it overheated and we had to have a friend rescue the poor suby and tow it to our house. when it finaly came home it suprised me...i had always liked the Ea81 subys and when my dad brought one home it made my day. that summer we stripped it out and gave it a real good cleaning, the previous owner i sware used it as a smoker...tobacco smoker:( it was nasty, and to fix the engine some friends of ours gave us an 83 dl wagon. we used the motor and took many good parts for spares. It has been in the family for 5 years., it started as a ride for me and my twin sister to go to school and work in, when she got her acura it was mine for about a year till i got my scirocco. it soon was passed down to my little sister who was the last kid to drive it. she ran a stopsighn not 6 months after getting her licese and smashed the front right fender and bumper up, not long after that her frends dad smashed the left fender in, he paid her about 4-500 i think for the dammage but she kept the money and probably bought cloths:( . any way a year of her driving the suby she got herself a nice car....an acura legend v6..5sp manual..its a nice ride. The suby then sat and sat for a long time with no one to love it. it was all smashed up and the parents were about to chuck it. I turned to the rescue and proposed an project that i would have for the summer and that was to fix up the car as best i could and use it for school. This summer i put a new clutch in, cleaned the paint up, found a free parts car, via co-workers brother, used the hood and front fenders. with the help of my dad we got the motor and fenders all squared away. The project has a few final details to work out, i need to put my newly aquired trush turbo muffler on..install my small subwoofer and some door speakers and im set to go. here are a few picts i took... Next is my custome stereo install...this took forever...i had many many ideas going through my head and i finaly settled on this idea.
  16. hey thanks for the responces...fastest ive seen on this board yet...at least for my own posts. I drove around the block without the muffler on and its really not that loud compared to what i would have thought. i guess replacing the Y-pipe with one that has the cat intact would help. i could order a turbo type muffler from a the local parts place but im acualy going to try a cherry bomb...glasspak first. im thinking it will sound alright..a little quiteter than withought the muffer. does anyone run a glasspac and have comments on the sound...is it that bad? and most of the turbo mufflers i have seen are 2.75in or 2.5in...and the inlet is offset and the outlet is centered...opposit of what that link was showing me.
  17. Im near completion of my summer project...getting my first subaru up and running. the muffler was shot but the existing pipe is in good shape so i hacked off the muffler right above the rear drive axle and now im in the process of finding a muffler that will fit that spot... im not going to through on a cherry bomb...i want somehting quite yet good sounding. im thinking of a common "turbo" type muffler but im not sure how to mount it. QUESTION...does anyone have a picture of an aftermarket muffler in that spot for the existing round muffler...i need some ideas on how to go about this. any pic will do, i just wna tto make sure i get something that fits and not have to keep returning stuff. Thanks guys.
  18. i havn't put over $200 bucks into it....a weber carb is $$$$ so it woun't happen. unlessi can get a used cheap one... im going to clean it out and see if that will help...it just has a massive flatspot...rev it to fast it sputters and wants to die...
  19. well as of last week and monday i got the car running and put back to gether. i gave her a wash last night and she is nice and shiny...though i still need to buff out the hood and right fender. when i got it back on the road i found a problem with the left front axle...possibly bad splines on the hub or the axle so i need to get a part for that..but over all she drives real nice...aside from a crapy carb....i hate carbs.
  20. hummm. i might have to dive it a try. though taking off that vacume deal is a pain...i cant even get to one of the screw heads. im just worried that i will get under my normal 25mpg
  21. has anyone ever taken off the vaume mecanism that opens the second barell of the hitachi carb and hard wired it to open mechanicaly. there is a mod on the mod section and im curious if it works well or not. bare with the spelling...its a little late.
  22. A long and lost post i have made is back Today i just got back from snaging some fenders and a hood off an 82 DL wagon, i thought they wouldn't fit but they do just a different color is all. if we can get my uncls car dolly i will have the car at home and hopfully snag a few bits. its a ea81 with a 5sp 2wd. oddly enough the car has cruse control and no rear wiper..just a smooth rear hatch. i should get some pictures of my first suby project.
