1. Well that was a wasted tank of gas. What a bunch of Jerks.. They had a Brat with a right front fender that was more bondo than fender. Wanted too much and had a take-it or leave-it attitude. Then I found an air cleaner can for the 1.6 presently in the Brat and he wanted $30 for it, then insisted I take it back to the car if I wasn't going to buy it. Maybe their all not like that but this guy was. Steve
2. I can't seem to find a model year time line for the fuel systems. As I prowl the junk yards I seem to find SPFI on all and have yet to come across a MPFI, until I get to the EJ22 engines (which is true port injected). My Haynes manual (1970-1984) shows a 2 injector (right and left bank) in some instances. Does the ea81 and ea82 have anything to do with this time line?? I looked at a '86 and '89 which both had MPFI yesterday and wonder what year they went to MPFI (two injectors) and was the ej22 the first to have four injectors?? Earlier in the week, I looked at a 85 and it was carb'd. It would also be helpful to see a time line for hydraulic lifter (lash adj.) and solid lifter along with interference and non-interference models. Or for that matter, when did they go from cam in block to single and cam in head?? My head is spinning, especially when I get to the junk yard and can't remember what I'm suppose to know. Thanks, Steve
3. That could be said for most yards. However, that often works to the buyers advantage, I have found. When if comes to negotiating the final price, I just remind them that "you wouldn't even know you had this part, if I hadn't gone and looked!". Or "Better my money or then crusher"! If the weather clears today, I'll go check it out. Steve
4. I called the Chehalus yard today and they had sold one of the Brats "whole" and the Right fender was gone on the other. I ask about a 77-79 car and she said the only one they had with a fender was an 80, which wasn't going to work.. I may go down there tomorrow and browse around. I need some other stuff as well. Thanks, Steve
5. I sure would appreciate that. I'm about an hour away but eventually I plan to head down there with my tool box. I've searched the yards in this area and none have any thing older than mid 80s. One yard worker just told me that they had just crushed two Brats last month. Steve
6. We have been talking about a Automatic here so far. And it has been very informative. Now I'm looking on Craigslist at a 5 spd manual tranny in a 92 Legasy and that means it will be All Wheel Drive and no way to disengage the front and rear drive. Is they still engaged even when the gear box is in nuetral?? I'm thinking yes!! Thanks for all the replies. Steve
7. Off topic but I'll ask here since you mentioned it. Yes, seller reports that it has "blown gaskets". I'm assuming that means head gaskets. What is the history on these EJ25. And is it that big a deal to pull the engine and replace the head gaskets?? Very tempting price of $400 but he also says "Rear passenger wheel needs new rods. ", not sure what that means. Looks to be setting square/flat. Waiting for a call or email regarding these matters. Maybe I should run as fast as I can. Steve
8. I'm looking at purchasing a non-running 97 Legacy Outback and want to tow it on my dolly. I know it has an Automatic, but haven't been able to confirm the drive configuration. I'm assuming it will be AWD and not way to disengage the rear wheels. Is there a way to tow this vehicle on it's rear wheels for a 100 miles or so?? Or should I figure on disconnecting the rear drive shaft?? If disconnect it at the differential, is the connection at the center bearing splined at the back side so I can just pull it off?? I tried to search this but there were just too many variables to get the info I need. Thanks, Steve
9. Thanks for the quick reply.. Just the info I needed. Since I have a ej22 ready for a swap, I might consider putting it in this car if it is a nice as it looks. Plenty of good Legacy engines available. I have a lead on a wreck right now with low mileage ea22 but automatic tranny for $200. Whole car. Steve
10. Quick question! I'm on Craigslist and waiting for the seller to call me back. What engine and fuel system will this 88 GL have. I was looking for a donor car for the tanny and this one popped up. http://seattle.craigslist.org/skc/cto/1519163964.html Looks like another good candidate for a EJ22 conversion. Steve
11. Thanks Nipper, A lot of great information. My understanding of differentials were limit to the basic "rear-end" differential "of old". My 4WD tractor had a limited slip of some form and until now, I have been afraid of breaking an axle or something.. I have a control lever so I will have to play with it and see just how it works. Never too old to learn something new, even at 72. Steve
12. My Brat is a 79 and has the starter on top. The tranny is pretty well shot and will have to be replaced. Until recently, I was thinking the EJ22 was just a Lagacy 2.2L, fuel injected. However, I'm now becoming aware that the EJ22 was in other models, like the Impreza. I'm now becoming aware that the choice of transmitions is very limited for the EJ22. AWD of FWD or the automatic(s). I'm now more convinced that I will go with an EA82 in some form since the Lagacy/impreza doesn't sound like an economic daily driver choice. I'm back to the "bone yard" today with a bit more knowledge and appreciate all the help. Steve
13. Ok, that would be a factor to consider. If I get to Lagacy axles, what do I have to do to them. shorten, change hub joint/spindle end?? I have a well equipt machine and weld shop. Steve
14. That helps and to answer your question; I need to have an idea of which year and model cars to look in for a tranny for my EJ22 swap into my Gen1 Brat. My EJ22 came from a early 90s Legacy 2WD AT so that tranny was of no use to me. Now I'm looking at the prospect of going with a Legacy MT tranny and just realize that limits me to AWD 5spd MT. However, I "Now" understand the EJ22 was in the Impreza as well.. Here is another question: does FWD stand for "front wheel drive" or Four wheel drive?? The Impreza chart shows this as being offered in 93-94. Are there additional transmission option in the Impreza? or any other models. I know the most popular tranny of this swap is from the older car models and require an adaptor plate. However, I get the impression, most a looking for off-road performance, while I'm after street and highway economy and reliability. Steve
15. I have been reading dozens of posts and threads pertaining to Tranny choices seem to get lost in the process. One of the factors, although minor, is the need for an adapter if I go with anything other than the tranny that naturally mate to the EJ22 engine. I want to look at this question from different "Angle", albeit obvious. Why not just use the Legacy tranny?? And what trannies were offered, that would bolt up directly to the EJ22?? Of course I would want to consider known problems with any of them. Either mechanical, performance and swap problems (particular to the Gen1 Brat). Steve
16. Maybe I missed this in my early search for the right tranny type, however when I went to a link of "a lot" of tranny specs., I came across these two terms. What does it mean and advantages/disadvantages of each. I also came across some differential terms that cofuse me (a little). Viscous or DCCD and OPEN or Helical LSD. Just curious and it these terms something that I should concen myself with?? Steve
17. Could someone help me get my head straight on this?? I keep getting lost while searching for tranny swaps. I'm beginning to understand the tranny designations and know where the EJ engines come from (I think). I have a Gen1 Brat with a 1.6L 4 spd which selectable 2 or 4WD. I'm making notes and checking them twice and sometimes I think I'm getting IT. Steve
18. Thanks Scott. However the SJR kit is outside my budget. Not to try and knock-off SJR, I'd prefer to build my own since I have a full machine shop, weld and fab. for a living, pre-retirement. Just looking at the manor and experience of other DIY lifts. I might spring for one of their ej bell housing adptor plates. However, I can handle the flywheel mod. Thanks Steve
19. I'm somewhat familiar with lifts, as they applied to my sons Yota. He had a chassy lift while others had a body lift, etc. I'm not going off road (intentionally) and just need enough lift to allow the transplant of an EJ22 and 5 spd D/R into my 79 Brat. I'm thinking this may involve transplanting some different struts, etc.. or let's keep it simple!! Steve
20. Thanks, that is much better info than I got for the junkyard computer cross reference. And that explains why the '80 sedan I found had a different fender than I was looking for. At least now, when I call around the more distant yard, I will be better imformed before drive there to look it over. The real problem, I'm finding, the yards crushed most everything that was older than '80s. The worker that took me around said they had recently crushed a couple Brats. What a shame. I'm told there where only 92 thousand imported. Not sure if that is true but it seems like a very small number in 'Import Terms". Thanks again. Steve
21. I have been thinking of this but the donor car was a 2wd AT and is no longer available. However, I did get the complete wiring harness, eng. compartment and every thing from under the dash including the cruise control. Originally I was going to put this Legacy in a VW Vanagon. Lost interest in that and both the engine and Vanagon are just sitting here. I'm going to ask: What is wrong with using the DR 5 spd, of what I have listed?? Wouldn't the mileage be better in street/hwy use since the rear wheels are disengaged?? My hwy car/daily driver has been front wheel drive for almost 20 years and never had any problem. Right now I drive GEO Metro's (have about 8) and the 5 spd 2dr hatch back will get me 50 mpg on the long trips, even at speeds up to 70mph. That is without any extra passenger or heavy load. If loaded or if I take an AT or 4 door, I drop to around 40 mpg. For a work truck I have an old 88 S10 4wd DR28L that gets around 24 mpg but it now has about 200k and never had the engine rebuilt or valve job. I just don't want to pull that engine, Did it once to put in a clutch and never again. The Brat now has a working 1.6L engine 4X4 and that would be OK for my daily driver. I would miss the DR when pulling out of a bad spot-steep driveway with a load. I should just restore all the off engine hoses, wires and components and go with that for awhile. However, the 4 spd tranny is as loose as a goose. Hard to fine the gates and I haven't driven it on the street yet to see if all the gears and sychros are still there. Just low and reverse is all I have used. (can't really tell which gear it is going into. The transfer case work I guess my question would be or recommendation: Fix/replace the old tranny and drive this one a while ooor save my money and time and swap the EJ22 in with one of the trannys I have found. I would like to hear from some who have gone with the D/R . Particularly, those who use their Soob for daily street purposes, with infrequent need of the 4WD. Most everyone, so far has had experience the FT 4WD 5 spd. I live in western Washington state and I have both the S10 4WD and a F150 4WD. In most winters, I just don't go out if there is heavy snow or ice. But if I do I might use my 4WD 50 miles a year or 2 days. Other times, when I'm hauling my tandom axle trailer or vehicule dolly I might use the 4WD for a couple hundred feet when on soft ground or slick grass or steep driveway DR is handy. I guess the DR in the Brat would be of more use to me than the actual 4X4, or maybe both in combination. I think I'm convincing myself that I want the DR for the sake of having the low range.. Sorry, I have been rambling.. That happen when you get old and no wife to debate things with. Steve
22. I finally took some pictures of my 79 Gen1 Brat and now have "Post Attachment Priv.". So I will post them here. Pretty Rough (well more "Rough" than pretty). Really bad fender Bad dent behind door post. Interior trashed but has OEM radio and clock. Many off engine components missing. Runs but won't idle (I wonder why?) Scored two spare engines. Tailgate is good but missing latch handle. Steve
23. I had the fellow at my favorite junkyard check which fender I could use to replace my right one. He didn't have any thing in his yard but his computer told us that any car or brat 78-83 would interchange. Would this be correct? Thanks Steve
24. It is just dawning on me that when I change trannys, I have to consider changing the rear end to match the output to the front wheel ratio of the transaxle. I don't know how I missed that. I guess, as I'm wheeling and dealing with the junkyard for the tranny, of my choice, I should get him to throw in the rear end as well. Along with the axles, I suppose. While I'm under the Brat, I might as well do a moderate lift so the tranny will fit easier. Oh-MY!!! What am I getting into?? Steve
