  1. So I wanted to just jump in real quick to offer something back to the board and its members , I will be back home in South Dakota(yes I travel extensively) in a few weeks,,, there are unbelievable places there that I would be happy to guide into, and the best and sometimes only way is lil subie4wd or dirt bike,,I dnt want to set off a rush but thats how I find the old mines out there in the Black Hills National Forest,,, I pan gold for a hobby,,,, camping back in the hills is still free and you wont have to ask permission or have a note from home,,, its really still America out here,, its wide open,, and the best way is by Subaru, flat out the Sub can made into a camp outfit as you know and I have spent many nights camped in the back of a wagon in the deep woods,,, man its nice. My next posts will be in other forums here to keep things in order,,, so great to be here and appreciate the fine reception and kind advice,,, freekin place rocks! doc
  2. Addendum; actually 3sisters is a pass on the divide on Interstate 80 not 90 ,cold fingers. I spent nearly an hour under the hood identifying mystery tubes and wires. Now, the backfiring has ceased. One of you guys must have sneaked in here and plugged the 4 main vacuum tubes leading to the air cleaner, while I was in here on the internet. It seems that these create a useless vacuum loop which serves only as a kind of vent from the valve covers, now I know the carb need air to feed the mill,, so any vacuum at the intake would defeat the purpose,, cant fill in all the physics blanks, but reasoning that the leaking exhaust needed to be compensated from somewhere else,, backfires through the tail, so allow extra air at the intake,,,, I read it all here and your help has caused a crushing success,, now the neighbors Envoy will shudder as I top the icy hill leading out from our complex..... many many many thanks one and all!!!
  3. An absolute goldmine of info .. wow , the number of replies and directives led me to enough "dope" to start on this problem confidently, and its like 20degF outside this afternoon,,,,, but this is a labor of love,, cold fingers notwithstanding... million thanks doc 429 Cant wait to hear "red" purrrrrrrrrrr......
  4. nope the former owner must have taken it to the pawn shop with the radio,, but it does have four wheels and,, it uses em all! ive got a long story about passing escalades, navigators and the like up at three sisters on the wyoming/utah border during a bad winter storm,,, everyone else was stopped due to icy I90 ,, guess who shot the line thru the semis and high$ outfits and topped the hill in 2wd,,, while i watched the caddys and lincs sit in the middle of the highway in my rear view mirror??? that was me in gl wagon,,, more about this after some beer, maybe.... thanks for being here because im hoping that i can get some good advice on fixing this ride,,, im not the best mechanic,, but i have more fun drivin anyway... im originally from Pleasantville,,, (Jersey shore) hava good un
  5. but she under thes is a little under the weather .I bought her a month ago and have slowly been bringing her systems back to service.this one is my 6th subie.like many others which sat out in the pasture for 4 years ,, mine still started and was able to make it to the gas station.... she will backfire when you shift,, more revs = louder backfires,, ifourth of july loud.just after releasing the gas pedal to shift gears...timing i thought,, maybe clogged fuel line, i do read about the common cures but i dont see well anymore and mechanics around heah say" we dont work on no furrin cars" as you guessed i live near a gm plant and a chrysler plant,,,, so here i am, do you think i should keep this little gem or let her suffer with this cough? no way i love my subie,, what should i do first to cure her? 1987 gl wagon 4wd red no radio.. thanks one and all in advance,,, my names doc and i live in indiana..
