  1. and if it was bypassed then im going to say the egr is not working properly, drive the car 50 miles or so and the check engine will probably come back on, easy way to check and see if egr is working, warm car up, and look under hood, when you rev the motor egr valve should be able to see moving, if it is bypassed and light doesnt come on your still not getting the gas mileage you should be getting and could lead to later problems from the car running to rich or to lean, and with that it could also lead to the problem im at now with my car which is either a bad o2 sensor or bad catylic converter, which is most likely due to the previous owner of the car not getting this problem fixed to begin with $79 at any subaru dealer, and no tools required to fix in less then 2 minutes
  2. its called a back pressure transducer, i only know becuase i recently needed to change mine, it was bad and it controls the air flow for the egr
  3. i have a 96 outback legacy with 2.5L. ive been getting a p0420 code lately, about a month ago i had to change the back pressure transducer going into the egr, and since then i get a p0420 bank 1, and a second code for the same exact thing that says pending, i recently bought this car a few months ago so i dont know how long the egr wasnt working correctly, my thinking is telling me that if it was running richer becuase the egr was not working correctly, then maybe it gunked up the front o2? does anyone else believe my thinking is correct, i warmed the car up earlier and got it good and hot went to pull the front o2 and look at it and it is very very tight, while the back o2 felt it was very easy to come loose, i did not pull either out to look at but im thinking that maybe the front o2 is stuck open and not allowing it to come out easily. should i just start by buying a new o2 for the front and start there. off my code reader i get p0420 1 of 2 catalyst efficiency below threshold (bank 1) p0420 2 of 2 pending catalyst efficiency below threshold (bank 1)
  4. problem fixed, pulled the pan down, and the filter was broken, the stem coming off the top of the filter going into the trans was broken off and not allowing it to pump fluid
  5. problem fixed, pulled the pan down, and the filter was broken, the stem coming off the top of the filter going into the trans was broken off and not allowing it to pump fluid
  6. just went and had fluid flushed and added some trans x, noise is still there, its starting to look more and more like new trans time, got a quote for a warrantyed tranny for 695
  7. yeah someone else mentioned the fluid pump, and the more i listen to it, that is what it seems to be, nothing else is wrong with the tranny drives and shifts great, now the next question is how hard is this to change? and if the pump is shot am i better off to get a new transmission. ive got a quote off the internet for a warrantyed complete tranny for 695 and then i can drop and put it in myself, im calling a shop on monday to get a quote to fix the problem, but im wondering if the pump is going bad how much damage has this created that isnt known yet? and if i take it to a shop they may pull the tranny and tell me the pump killed the rest of the tranny and that they will need to replace it, and that leads to excessive labor and parts that i could end up doing myself, ill pull and swap a tranny but im not going to get into pulling the tranny apart and trying to fix things inside it.
  8. recently bought a 96 legacy outback, have a noise coming from transmission, it runs and shifts fine, the more i read and get advice it sounds like it will end up being transmission fluid pump, question i have is i dont know when the last time the fluid and filter was changed, could it be possible that im getting the noise because its old and needs to be cleaned out? and maybe its getting clogged up? (im new to not only subarus but also automatic transmissions) or is it once those pumps are making a noise that means they are shot and need to be changed? just wondering which way i should go, thinking of taking it out to have fluid and filter changed tomorrow morning but if it definetly wont help i will just save that money and wait till monday to take it to a trans specialist and have it pulled and replaced
  9. 96 legacy outback automatic, where is the transmission fluid pump? is it accessible through the pan? or do i need to pull out the entire transmission to access it? i ask because i have a noise coming from transmission somewhere, it almost sounds like a power steering pump does when it goes bad, i am starting to think this may be the problem, it makes a whining bearing sound no matter it being in park reverse neutral or drive,
  10. is this pump accessible once i pull the tranny pan out or to check and fix this do i need to pull the entire trans out?
  11. ha funny you should mention the scope, my mother is a nurse i was actually outside earlier. and sadly it does sound like it is coming from somewhere in the bell housing, transfluid looks fine
  12. i have a 96 legacy outback 2.5L dohc ej25d with auto trans, where can i find a diagram or schematic breakdown of all parts inside, mostly concerned with seeing what is inside the bell houseing, have a noise coming from something inside between engine block and main body of transmission, almost sounds like there is a bad bearing or something inside, makes a high pitch whining sound, i recently bought the car dirt cheep knowing it had a few issues, but the body is in superb condition so i knew it would take a little work to end up with something very nice. when i got the car i noticed it was missing a rubber plug up in the top of the bell housing, i think it was called the timing hole plug, i dont know how long it has been missing but my thinking is it had left the flywheel and what ever else is inside exposed by not having the cover on it, so who knows what has gotten inside and possible ruined what ever bearing there may be in there, any ideas or a place to get a diagram of what is actually inside would be appreciated.
