  1. Ok, so most of my posts have been in the older gen forums for mainly two reasons: One, ive only really had issues with my 87 RX, and Two, the very little i do know, is about EA82's and ive learned 95% of it from USMB. With that said, a friend got me in touch with a guy selling his 02 WRX wagon. He believes the turbo went out because of the Banjo bolt filter issue. I'm still waiting for a chance to get more info from the guy and go up there and check the thing myself - again. not like i think i know more than the owner, i just don't want to overlook anything. I need help with a couple of questions. First, whats the best way to find out if it IS the turbo, and how would go about finding out if its an oil starvation thing or if it just swallowed the up-cat? Then figuring out the issue, whats my solution: banjo-bolt problem - remove banjo bolt screen, replace turbo and oil? is an engine rebuild necessary? how extensive? new-shortblock-extensive rebuild? turbo eating stuff issue - rebuild? or complete replacement? The main issue is figuring out the extent of repairs needed in order to weigh the costs. Ive searched a few forums and it always seems there's the the "my friend just got a rebuilt engine for $xx price." Well, i need "xx price from yy source in Washington", the kind of information i can use to find parts, not just what prices are possible. this is all based on the little i know about WRX's and Im sure im overlooking other possable issues. My problem is, someone gets me started on one train of thought, and suddenly all the symptoms point to that issue. Any enlightenment on the subject will be very much appreciated.
  2. This information is gold. thank you, that's just enough push in the right direction. the prices are all really reasonable on SJR, i think thats what ill do.
  3. So heres where im at: My 1987 RX blew a head gasket. Two options im considering: EJ "swap" or rebuild w/mods I read the ej swap threads and a bit about the ea82 so i have an idea of the work involved in swapping, and i know the limitations of the ea82T. So I need some input on this. Reading the ej-ea document(sorry cant remember the author off the top of my head) the part that has me a little anxious is the wiring, mainly the removal and installation of the wiring harness. so for the swap my questions are: Is there anyone who would splice the harness for a fee? is there a shop who could do the whole swap? Whats the ideal(easiest) donor for this project? for the ea mods, i know it cant handle a ton of boost so i’m mainly looking at the rebuild to begin with: Is there a difference between the turbo and non-turbo blocks? and the different years? my current block has been tapped in two locations, and id like to have stock threads for the distributer and the tensioner pulley. I guess my overall question is what donor block can i use and how can i tell if the head is warped ahead of time? and then besides all that, while i have the engine out, ill be doing the belts/water pump, but what else should i do as far as maintenence and reasonable mods? i dont want to spend more than 4k on the whole thing, but the cheaper the better. but obviously i want as much quality as money that money can buy.
  4. Ok, so, I have an 87 RX and a shop replaced my distributor and they apparently had "a Subaru 1800 distributor out back" and put that in. Its been running...more or less now for about two years. I went to look into its misfire/stuttering problem further when i noticed the part number was 22100-AA440. Everything i find in reference to that number is a GL-10. I would like to know if its the right one, a new one says the part number would be one of these: 22100-AA450X, 72649003781 Is the random site i pulled those numbers from full of crap? are these distributors different at all? the full list of numbers is: 22100AA440 D4P86-03 A A703 do i have the right distributor?
  5. Thanks for the tip. I tooktook the intake apart and there's oil in the intake, from the turbo to the manifold. What is going on here? Oh, and I checked out the sensor, it shows conductivity, higher ohms when I removed it, so it seems ok, although, now its shows no conductivity...any thoughts? I replaced the pcv just now but the old one still worked...
  6. Hey, I need help, my 87 RX seems to loose power above 3k rpms, usually its like fuel cutoff at around 3500-4k, I assume the filter but I am also only getting 12-15 mpg, and at times it idles at about 2k, usually when cold, I've also noticed some knocking/misfiring. And to add to that, lately, its been dying after it warm, at idle. I've replaced the timing belts recently and did the timing, this problem existed even before that. Help?
  7. ok, so bear with me, i'll start from the begining... Soon after i bought my RX, i started having power issues and within a day, it would not start, it would crank, but never start. after troubleshooting and checking the ECU code, i found that the ECU seemed to think it was the Crankshaft Position sensor, i think it was code #11. i searched and found no info on the subject, and to confuse things i talked to a mechanic at a subaru dealership and he said subies always flash #11. I gave in and took it to the mechanic. The mechanic said when using a timing light, they found the distibuter would fire sometimes, but other times wont at all. Wierd. so they replaced the disty, or so i thought and my car could drive. After a while i realized i could never go above 3000 Rpm and some of the same problems were happening again. this time i assumed the same issue, and advanced the distributer until it ran fine. It ran great but was only getting about 18 MPG tops. Just two weeks ago my little subie ate the timing belt for dinner. durring the diagnosing process, i managed to remove the distributer. I replaced the timing belt, and i may have messed up the drivers side belt, missed by maybe one tooth, My car ran, but not above 2000rpm so i figured the timing is off and i need to repossition the distributer. after adjusting the distributer again and again and again it never came back to life, never even start. It at least ran before, even if the timing belt was off a bit, Now i assume that i not only need to pull the belts off and make sure i get them right but maybe i need to replace the distributer, being that the crank sensor problem never seems to have been fixed? Feedback? I told the whole story in case somewhere along the line i got the wrong info or came to the wrong conclusions.
  8. Thanks Turbone. wich EJ did you use?
  9. So, I have an 87 RX coupe. I'm looking into an EA swap, I've read the EAtoEJ pdf and realize i need an adapter plate, etc. I'd like to rebuild and build up the engine before i put it in, maybe an ej22(easiest to find around here)...first of all, how good is the tranny in the RX? what kinda of power/torque could it handle? second, swapping EJ running gear sounds like a massive project to take on, am i right? PS, ive looked around and havent found much on the subject of course, im not the best at location info on forums. another point, If i could just upgrade the clutch for the swap, would this work? what can the LSD take from the engine?
  10. hey, i hope its alright if i post here, i have a 87 RX coupe and waqs doing some research on a swap and thought i saw that you did a 251 swap at some point? wanted your oppinion, I found an ej25D with a blown head gasket for 100 bucks, would you know if this is a viable option? is this a good motor, i've heard 25d's had gasket probelm wich explains the price. if you could have chosen another usdm motor for the swap what would it be? anyway just trying to get a fell for what i'm looking for. let me know, thanks

  11. Yeah, thats exactly what im hoping, maintain it for now and build an ej...we'll see how things go and ill post in update in a while. thanks again guys.
  12. thanks for the info guys, yeah im in the states and no theres no chance its a jdm motor. I currently have an MPFI EA82T in the RX and its at 140K and runing fine, i figure ill get much more out of it yet? no, i havent searched, i should have done that first...thanks again though.
  13. I found someone willing to sell me what he calls a 1993 turbo legacy motor. I have 1987 RX coupe. I was wondering first, is this the EJ20g? or wich motor would this most likely be? Would this swap be hard? is the EJ20 wider or narrower than the EA? also, would the tranny mount right up or not....I was planing on just buying the motor and building it slowly until i need it. Thoughts anyone? I've also posted this same question on mysubie.com
