So my stock radiator fan went south and I decided to replace it with an electric fan. I am wondering now if I can hook a relay up to the coolant temp sensor for the ECU (at least that’s what I think it is). It's located right by the drain plug; passenger side on the radiator. Pretty sure this is the temp sensor and the one next to the termostat housing is the gauge. Is it possible to rig up my electric fan and a relay to this sensor to get it to turn the fan on at the right temp? Is there a better way of doing this (some sort of fan switch maybe)? Also, i took out my AC when installing my Weber, so now I have the AC fan available. Should i use this fan also to help cool the radiator? Any help is appreciated!

Hardly Idles/Misfiring
hackasubaru replied to hackasubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I got my weber mounted and starts up and runs great i still gotta do a couple things and go for a test drive and make sure the tranny is all good. Thanks for all the help! I'll probably be stopping by pretty soon GD -
Was it the oil pressure sending unit or oil pressure switch? If i understood the difference between the two correctly; the sending unit is in charge of the oil pressure gauge and the pressure switch is for the light. Do you have both an oil pressure gauge and light?

Hardly Idles/Misfiring
hackasubaru replied to hackasubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I took some pictures but the quality was bad and you couldnt' really tell much with the carb still on the car. My buddy found me a weber though for real cheap. Gonna rip all that other stuff off and start with the weber; check timing again and vacuum leaks. Thanks for your help GD i'm sure ill have some more questions. -
Hardly Idles/Misfiring
hackasubaru replied to hackasubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ya i used the center of the three hash marks in conjunction with the TDC marks. Perhaps it is something to do with ignition timing or cam timing and i am doing it wrong. Im gonna read up on some posts and my chiltons/hanes and see what i can come up with. I'll double check my vacuum hoses too. thanks for the good info I'll try to get some photos of everything tonight and get them posted. -
Hardly Idles/Misfiring
hackasubaru replied to hackasubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ill check for vacuum leaks when i get home. im at work right now It misfired before the choke plug burned up. I am pretty sure timing is good. I put it to TDC put the left belt on. Turned it over 360 degress and then put the right side on. All the marks line up. Although if i hit the timing belts with a timing light when it is running the marks don't match up with the TDC marks; although they are an even amount apart. Should they line up when hitting it with a timing light while it is running? It starts and runs just doesn't want to stay idleing any more. Although, it was idleing before and after the choke burned up. It just sat for a day and now it doesn't want to idle -
So i pulled my engine out of my 87 gl wagon and replaced the head gaskets, front main seal, water pump, timing belts, oil pump seals, spark plugs and wires, cap/rotor, v belts, etc, etc. After putting it back in my car and getting everything hooked up i have a misfire. I checked cam timing and ignition timing and both looked fine. When i first fired it up i had to get ignition timing good but after that it idled fine but had a misfire. Double checked cam timing and it seemed fine. After running for about 10 minutes the plug that goes to the choke has a solenoid valve that seemed to burn up because the wires started smoking. I unplugged the choke for now and it didn't seem to effect much; just cold starting up. It idled fine the next day but working on it later on it won't idle now. I am wondering if i hooked up some vacuum lines wrong or something. Anyone got some good diagrams/pics or any ideas of where to start? I am thinking the carb might need to be tuned but i haven't ever worked with carbs. :-\ maybe a bad fuel pump?

Manual Tranny Axle Seals
hackasubaru replied to hackasubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
So I felt the left side to get an idea of the play in the axle. Then I replaced the seal on the left side(marked and counted the turns). Put it back on how it came off and it felt pretty much the same. Tightened the right side to where it looked like it was in about the same spot as the left(it actually only goes on one way and will screw all the way down until it stops). I got it nice and tight and then felt the play in the axle. I had to loosen it alittle bit but it felt really good. There was just alittle bit of play on each side. I replaced the output shaft seal cause i hadn't done that yet. The transmission is now back in the car Just have to put the engine back in and see how it feels. Thanks for the help!! I'll post after i get everything back together. -

Manual Tranny Axle Seals
hackasubaru replied to hackasubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ya your right, i found some web sites saying the same thing.. but they were on newer models also. I'm hoping my 87 isn't the same way.. unfortunately i've already removed the right side with out knowing this any idea of how i can get it back on getting the backlash/engagement correct? I have a friend that works at a tranny shop but i rather not have to take it in.. I don't wanna mess up the front diff. -
Gaskets for EA-81 Rebuild
hackasubaru replied to nitsuj80's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm doing the same on my EA82 engine, I was replacing the water pump also so I ended up doing a seal on that too. Might be a good idea but probably not too important. -
I had the same problem with the O-Ring on mine. It was a pain to get it to stay in place but I finally got it. Also, after pounding in the seal I noticed the spring had come off of the inside of the seal... i didn't have any tools to get it back on so ended up pulling it out and putting a new one in. I had never done an oil pump before though and it really wasn't that bad.

Hello from Portland and Welcome! I just joined a few weeks ago. This board is awesome!! so many helpful posts and people

I'm replacing the Axel seals on my manual transmision EA82 engine. The cap that holds the seal unscrews and there is an O-Ring on it. I am wondering if there is any type of special adjustment or if i can just unscrew it replace the seal and O-ring and put it all back together. I'm not very good with transmissions...

EA82 Cylinder Block Coolant Passage O Ring

Hey cool, thanks for the quick response! I figured something so hard to get too would be fairly reliable. I won't worry about it, time to put my engine back in -Jake
