  1. Hi, I'm confused about something with my 2002 Legacy L station wagon. The brake light and tail light are combined into a single bulb. When the car is running the tail light is out on the passenger side (all the other lights work fine). When the brake pedal is depressed, however, the brake light works. The bulb seems to be fine (since the brake light works) but something is wrong since the tail light isn't working. I don't understand how the brake/tail light combination works. Any tips on where I should be looking to id the problem with the tail light?
  2. '02 Legacy L I came home to a dead battery last week (someone left the map light on). After charging the battery and starting the car a new quirk developed. The doors automaticly lock themselves no matter if the key is in the ignition or not. There's about a 15 second delay after unlocking the doors and then 'click' the doors all lock themselves. It didn't do this before and I don't like it. The manual was no help. Is there a switch somewhere that sets the locks into this mode? How do I stop it?
  3. The owner's manual for my 1990 Loyale shows proper jackstand placement for the front as being the notch in the metal just behind the tires. It shows the same spot for proper placement of the jack. So, if I have a scissors-type jack, where can I place it so that the car can be lowered onto the jackstand in the correct position?
  4. This spins off of a previous thread in which I was asking why the temp gauge was not working for my 1990 Loyale w/ 155k miles. I'd like to investigate the connections at the coolant temp sensor for corrosion hoping I can just clean it up and get the guage working again. This is probably obvious to most but I'm new to auto mechanics and have questions. Does this engine EA82 (non-turbo) have more than one sensor or just the single one on the thermostat housing? Assuming that's the one that sends a signal to the dashboard guage, theres a short (~ 2 in) wire coming out of the sender that ends in a green plastic connector. I pulled the connector apart and it looks clean in there. So to check the connection at the sensor do I just yank the wire off at t-stat housing? I tugged a little and it wasn't coming off easily so I stopped. I'd appreciate any input. -shawn
  5. I'm concerned about my 1990 Loyale (155k miles, 4wd, standars trans) The temperature guage is allways cold. The needle climbs just a tiny bit after running it hard but it never really gets off the bottom. I suspected the thermastat so I looked into it. Pulled the old t-stat out in the morning when the engine was cold. I suspected t-stat to be stuck open but no, it was shut. I had a new one (180 deg) so I replaced it anyway. Drove the car this morning and same situation on the temp gauge - cold. I assumed that if the gauge wasn't working the needle wouldn't move at all. It moves just a hair and drops when I shut off the engine. Should I be concerned about running the engine too cool? Could it be a bad sensor and maybe I wouldn't even know if it was overheating? If so, how can I check the temp sensor and gauge?
  6. I just finished installing a brand new water pump for a 1990 Loyale. This car has the (non-turbo) OHC engine with a metal pipe connecting the water pump to the lower radiator hose. Short version: I replaced the O-ring on the pipe that slides inside the pump. Should I have done something more to seal that connection? Long version: After putting it all back together and starting the engine, water continued to flow from below the water pump (about 1 drop/second falling falling from the bottom of T-belt covers). I pulled the A/C bracket, crank pulley, t-belt covers off (leaving radiator in and full of water). Tried spinning the water pump shaft to find where the leak is coming from...hard to tell. It's not coming from the weep hole. Doesn't seem to be coming from the pump gasket. It's definitely wet below the pipe on the pump body but can't see any obvious drips (it's pretty tight in there). Any ideas?

While trying to remove the crankshaft pulley (a la Haynes Manual) I encountered the following problem: The screwdriver I had wedged in the ring gear teeth of the flywheel snapped as I torqued on the bolt for the crankshaft pulley. The bottom part of the broken screwdriver (the part that was wedged in the flywheel) slipped down behind the flywheel and is nowhere to be seen. Any ideas how to get the piece of metal out?
