  1. I need to put a new clutch in a 1992 Legacy wagon. The guy I bought it from claimed it was never replaced, but the car has over 200K miles on it, so who knows? Anyway, I am looking at the LUK kits - they list two. One has a bearing retainer sleeve, and the other says it is for a car that has not had the bearing retainer replaced or sleeved. I would like to order parts before I tear into it, so would it be best just to go with the one with the sleeve?
  2. The CEL light was on at first, but went out once it got running right. I'll check for codes tonight.
  3. Well, I'm sure it was oil, because it's still there (inside the engine compartment, I mean). If it were fuel it would have evaporated by now. But what you say makes sense - I will check out the cannister later. And I suppose the oil could have come from the filler tube, but temp. was normal.
  4. No, it was all over the engine compartment on that side too. I haven't had time to really see where it came from, and since it't not leaking like that now, I'm not sure I will ne able to tell.
  5. Thanks for the ideas. Assuming it was one of those things that caused the squeal and maybe the oil puke, why wouldn't it run, and why is it running ok now? Thanks.
  6. That's what I don't get - so far it is like nothing ever happened. Of course I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop.
  7. OK, I'm stumped, and I am hoping that the collective wisdom found on this board can give me some ideas as to what happened to my Sub (88 GL wagon). Here's the details - sorry if it gets kind of long. My wife was driving the car the other day, 30-35 mph, when - in her words - there was a high pitched squeal, along with a sudden black cloud of smoke out the exhaust, and a dramatic loss of power. She limped off the road and parked it, then called me. I get there about 15 minutes later, find that there is a puddle of oil under the right front side of the engine (around the charcoal cannister, etc.). It has always had your normal oil leaks for a 150k motor, but this was a lot - maybe a pint. I top off the oil, then try to start it. It stumbles a few times, then keeps running, so I decide to try driving it home. It starts out feeling ok, but then there is a sudden loss of power - feels like fuel cutting out. Easing off on the gas and then gently accellerating works ok for about a mile, then it quits and won't restart. All the while oil pressure and temp were normal, no smoke, and no more oil loss. I tinker with it on the side of the road for about 10 minutes, and finally decide to crack the fuel line where it comes off the filter to check for flow. Of course, it was fine, so I put it back together and try to start it again. After a number of false starts (it would start and immediately die), it finally keeps going, and I start revving the crap out of it to see what happens. Guess what - it just keeps running stronger, just like normal. We start driving, and it is running great. I really pushed it, trying to make something happen, but it just ran great. 2 days later, still no repeat of the problem. So what do you all think? I haven't really looked at anything since, and I'm really not sure what to look for.
  8. OK, I had a brief overheating issue because some idiot topped off the coolant level with H2O after fixing a radiator leak last summer, and when we got some real cold weather it froze up. It seems like right after that, I started noticing increased oil leakage, but I am not sure where it is coming from. All I know for sure is that it ends up on hot exhaust pipes, because I can smell it when stopped. Any ideas what to look for? Thanks. (88 GL wagon)
  9. I just finished removing my right axle (87 GL wagon) to do a CV boot rplacement, following the excellent instructions found here. Problem was, I encountered a LOT of resistance in getting the axle out. I was using a gear puller, and noticed the brake rotor starting to deform due to the extreme pressure. It finally took a combination of tightening the puller alternating with whacking the axle stub with a sledge to get it out. Any ideas on why this was so hard to remove, and what should I do to prevent this problem in the future? Thanks!
  10. Can I pully my driveshaft out and drive around with FWD only for a while to try and isolate a noise, or would that be bad? (88 GL wagon - dual range 5 sp.). Thanks.
  11. 88 GL wagon - fresh air vent by drivers side door is stuck. Where do I start taking things apart to access this control and hopefully get it freed up? Thanks!
  12. I just found your post about building a replacement resistor block for the heater fan. I am pretty ignorant when it comes to electronics - just how would I assemble all those parts? Do you have a diagram or some simple instructions? It surprises me that Subaru designed this control in this way, since for the most part it seems as though these cars are made to last forever. Thanks for the work you have done on this.
