  1. decided to let it go...didnt feel like messing with it... but i still have the factory gt wheels... witch i do believe they call the snowflakes with summer tires on... just wondering if i am going to sell or keep em
  2. im not even going to try to make it driveable again... plus i would believe that within time the harness is going to corrode and give me electrical headaches down the road..
  3. the insurance company said i could keep the car for $500... i am still trying to decide if its worth it to part it out... i knwo the motor is good since i know i hit the key before it went under.. i have until tommorow to decide... damage so far front and rear bumpers interior obviously one corner light both tailights have minor cracks towards the front of them... anything electrical.. one brand new firestone winterforce good drivetrain hood headlights rear gate all glass 3 brand new winterforces what you say... is it worth $500
  4. thanks everyone for all the info... a little work doesnt bother me as long as it is worth it... but as many requested here is the story of my first ru... i bought it off craigslist in november... it is a 98 gt wagon with a spd 2.5..129k miles.. looked nice... only problem was it had a salvaged title... so the guy figured it was worth 1200 thats what he had it on c list for... i gave him a grand and drove it home... later discoverd reciepts that the hg's, t belt and front brakes only had 30k on them and that was a 1800 dollar bill.. so i figured i scored good on the car... worked fine ran good... did tune up one cv fluids speed sensor... and what not... fast forward to sunday... went out to shawano lake here in wi to watch the ice races.. everybody is parked around the track... so after about an hour me and another buddy who has a lifted cherokee decide to go cruising and this is the first time i have ever been on this lake.. well we are cruising not far from shore he is behind me about 100 feet or so and we are just messing around and the shore line kept coming in and out... well right as i came by the shore line as it comes out and then quickly goes in, i see the hole but it looks like a entry point onto the lake and looked like glare ice... and basically i didnt figure it wasnt tell it was to late since i was cruising at about 50 mph... but the reason it was water was because it was an entry point... a entry point to a river that connects this lake to another one apparently... so it was flowing water... let me tell ya it is a scary fellin when your sinkin even if it only ends up being about 3 1/2 feet deep... so anyway just to give you a heads up... anytime you go through the ice you should always call 911 no matter what... i didnt know that and a passer by did that for me.. and then the dnr came out and said i had 30 days to remove it... yes thirty... i couldnt believe that.. but its a ticket for every day past that... so it got pulled it out after about 20 hrs of it in there just a warning to everyone out that i got lucky and my full coverage insurance covered it all... that included my $2300 tow bill... and they are giving me blue book for my car which i am sure a lot of you can figure out... so yes that is the story of ru #1
  5. well after sunday i now need a new car it was a 98 gt wagon 5 spd with the ej25 and it was my first subaru and i loved it... but i would like something a little more basic.. like not obd2 and i want manual windows and what not and the reason i am posting this in the older car section is because i found this http://madison.craigslist.org/cto/2156908550.html wondering if you guys would be able to give me a heads up and things to look for since i know nothing about this gen... does it sound like a good deal.. i like the fact that it had a 2.2 swapped into it.. i am looking for something reliable.. would this be it.. i dont know if its a auto or a manual... and just for the the curious here is my old car btw subarus dont have features like an old vw bug
  6. i believe it is the alarm i also have one on my 98 gtw.. you got a key fob...
  7. yep new sensor fixed it... wierd though cause the old sensor was within spec...
  8. i would say maybe a dirty bad battery connection... new battery may be dead or you starter just took a crap....
  9. was help full... appericated it... wierd though my cel turned off.... and sometimes when i press my clutch in to go coast and then downshift the car shuts off... yea i went to the dealer and ordered it today... they said hopefully wednesday... and yep $133 gone... somedays i miss the cable speedo's...thanks for all the help... i will report back to see if the sensor fixes it..
  10. i think there is only one sensor since it is a manual.... can anyone verifiy
  11. cruising down the road and suddenly the speedo just dropped to zero... btw its a 98 gtw 5spd.. about a mile later the cel went on and since i was on my way to my shop... i put the scanner on it and got a p1540 something about a speed sensor, witch makes sense. and if i remeber right a p1100 something about a starter circuit.. so i just cruised around the parking lot with the scanner and it wouldnt pickup the vehicle speed... is this just a classic case of a vss... just want to make sure before i go spend $100... thanks and merry christmas...
  12. went to the local dealer for the first time... it sucks... you actually have to go to the honda dealer parts center to get parts... guy was a da and not very friendly... but i got hte baffle plate fork and the clips for 75 and they were all in stock... so thanks again everyone for all the help...
  13. is that subarupartsforyou website the same cost of parts from all dealers... cause i have a suby dealer not that far from me and if the parts dont cost anymore i will just go there. plus i like dealing in person anyways..
  14. yea i am definatly getting the flywheel sent out.. looks like im going to add the baffle plate to the list... and i was thinking about doing heads and belt but i have reciepts for them and they only have 30k on em..
  15. so, so far i need -clutch fork -clips for to bearing -manifold/header gaskets -pull motor not trans -skip the lightened flywheel while i am at it i am thinking about buying the knock off header off ebay... suggestions?? what is a seperator plate, is it a pressure plate? and also a baffle plate? thanks for all the input...
  16. so last week i noticed my clutch was starting to slip... and i plan on doing it over christmas break. so i have a week to complete.. but i want to make sure i get all the parts i need, is there any other parts i should get and replace as preventative maintenance... it seems that the brand exedy is the way to go and i was going to get a kit off ebay with 12.5 lb flywheel.. anyone try these kits... pros cons... anything to watch out for... any hints are apperciated... thanks
  17. see first i did buy a new front cat and i noticed that were the o2 does go they pretty much have a shield around it.. its just a piece of oversized pipe... it was a walker brand cat.. so wouldnt that be just as bad as what i did... if the rear o2 sensor checks the efficency of the cat then how come the 420 code went away while messing with the front one.. and wouldnt doing the spark plug fouler trick restrict flow across the o2 just as much if not worse since you are pulling it out of the cat? if this sounds cocky it was not intended, one of the downfalls of writing over the web...
  18. no i put the flow restricter behind the o2... and as far as the spark plug anti fouler trick, witch i read a lot of... that would not help in a plugged cat case.. plus i preffer not to run cats...i like my higher flowing exhaust... and it was about a hours worth of time... i was just going to go get a test pipe bent up but this works just as good.. and again this is how i fixed it just another way.... thats all plus you would also gain a higher flow exhaust..
  19. well i am new here... and i decide to join you guys in this forum since it seems to have the most traffic and nice set up... but anyways just picked up my first suby its a 98 legacy gt wagon... and i will say i love it... fell in love with it on the test drive... and the cel was on when i got it and i have the guy check it and it said it was 0420 catalyst below threshold bs and what not.. so he cleared it and i bought it and within about 100 miles came back on.... changed the front o2 sensor and cleared it and again 100 miles later same thing... so after many many more hours of research and a call to the dealer i was convinced i had a bad cat... and since i read a lot saying its a good idea to replace both and then both o2 sensors witch runs about $600 in parts.... and it being my beater i decided ill pass... and make my own way at fixing it... this will not work for you if you have to pass smog...or you are a emissions hippy...sorry i dont have pictures so i will try my best to type my pictures into words ...i first started out by pulling the front cat down... witch contains 1 o2 sensor... and if you notice it is at the front of the cat before the material... so i then went and cut open the cat but cutting it if i were to cut a square out of it but i only made three cuts... and then i bent it back and opened it like a door.... then i took a big flat head screwdriver and a hammer and beat the material out.. when you do this make sure you remove all of it... there is a wirey mesh that wraps around it and also two rings on the ends that have to be removed or it will rattle/ end up in the other cat... and once i had everything removed,i then took a piece of small angle iron that i had laying around.. and put it around the o2 so it would catch air and slow the flow across it... as in the V was on the back side of it... and welded it in there. i am sure if you just got a piece of pipe a little bigger then the o2 and welded in there it would work two... and and then when that was done i bent the cat door shut and welded it up and reinstalled it with new gaskets... and now i have almost 300 miles on it and no light... money spent nada money saved >=$600 jsut thought i would chime in to help save people some money... enjoy and do at your own risk... sorry again for no pics
