  1. I do these things all the time and believe it or not it can be extremely simple. Here's the catch, you need a axle nut socket, maybe a two jaw gear puller if your shaft is stuck in the splines, and a few basic tools. If your components are really rusty it can be difficult. Buy a Haynes repair manual available at most book stores and chain auto stores (autozone, advance auto parts etc..about $14.95) You can also borrow almost any tool, no charge, at autozone if one is nearby. I was in your situation a few years back and now I can tear down a Subaru no problem. Oh, almost forgot.. if the manual or anyone tells you to remove the balljoint or tie rod, you don't have to. Turn the steering knuckle all the way to one side and push the axle all the way in. There is plenty of clearance. I get my remanufactured cv joints for $60 w/ a $50 core charge at advance or autozone. Also make sure you don't get any dirt or grease in the wheel bearing area. Work slow and careful. YOU CAN DO IT! GOOD LUCK!
  2. Thanks for the reply. That is what I am about to do, the logical thing but does this code indicate a fault with the vss sensor or could it be something else like the idle air conrol unit ?
  3. Just purchased a 98' forester 2.5 with manual transmission. I like my vehicles clean so degreased and hosed underneath the car then went for a drive to dry it off. About 5 miles into it the cel came on and immediatley started to run rough. I had a scanner with me and p1507 was the code "manf. cntrl vehicle speed ,idle speed control auxiliary inputs". I cleared the code and the car ran fine for the rest of the day. The cel has come on a few more times since with the same code at about the same driving distance, only after sitting all night. I am about to replace both vehicle speed sensors. Does this sound like the solution? I could use some advice.
  4. Go to search "catalyst" and look for the thread. This P0420 is very common and there is a lot of chat about it. This happened to me last week. My cel came on after I changed a mucked up air filter. I thought I was in for a new cat. Someone suggested a clogged fuel filter could set off this code due to a poor fuel air ratio. I replaced the fuel filter. I also checked the gaskets to my front cat at both ends. They were a bit corroded and possibly leaking but not noticeably so I sealed the area with exhaust cement. They were correct. Problem solved. As far as going from a GM product to a Subie, cel will go on in Subie for almost nothing and won't go on for a serious problem in GM crap.
  5. Thanks, saw the thread after I posted. Something I left out was that I replaced the air filter and shortly after the cel and code PO420 came on (20 miles). I read the thread about a clogged fuel filter and not enough fuel mixing with air so I took a long shot and replaced the filter. 260 miles so far and no cel. How can this be? Shouldn't another code have come up first, something regarding fuel flow or air fuel mix. I swear, these cars have gremlins in them. This is my third subie and every one of them has had a very strange problem.
  6. Howdy, I noticed someone with a similar problem just yesterday. I buy, sell, and fix cars for fun. I recently bought a 96' outback 2.2 with 135k on it and have restored it into excellent condition. The car runs perfect and mpg is good. Last week my check engine light came on. I have a scan tool (get one if you don't) and it says "catalyst below threshold bank 1". I was about to replace my front cat but remembered this site. I would rather not waste any $$$ on a guess. Could it be a bad O2 sensor instead, maybe the rear cat ?
