  1. GD said run XT6 bits. I have the clutch disc already, will order a new pressure plate (Exedy 15009), but I am looking into options for my flywheel. GD said teh XT6 step is .815". I just went to my scrap Subaru pile and broke apart an EA82 engine from a 4spd DR transmission (I know, worst combination ever but it came in a parts Brat for $350). How do I know what flywheel I just pulled out of it, EA81 or 82? It excepts the 8-7/8" disc and has a .845" step. Around the outside of the clutch contact surface against the shoulder there is a step like it has been resurfaced. Will this work or am I better off getting the EA81 resurfaced to my new specs?
  2. I've been told you have some information I need. I have an EA81 with a 5spd DR and 28" tires = slippery clutch. I have the EA81 flywheel and pressure plate with 5spd clutch disc. How much do I turn down the surface of the fly wheel to make things work better? Is there another option for more powerful grab?

  3. I just put a 5spd DR behind my EA81 and I'm running 28" tires resulting in a overly slippery clutch. I'm running the EA81 pressure plate and flywheel with the 8-7/8", 24 spline disc for the 5 speed. When I mounted thepressure plate on the flywheel the fingers depressed in and became almost flat. is this normal? Any recommendations for a more powerful clutch?
  4. 7-7/8" 21 spline or is it a 8-7/8" 21 spline?

  5. Oh... And if it makes any difference on your modifications I am lifting the Brat 4".

  6. Hi Jerry,

This is Shelby, hopefully you'll be getting all my bits for the conversion in the mail tomorrow. I have a couple questions though...

-What years and clutch disc size do I run?

-Pressure plate and fly wheel from EA81 engine correct?

-How long of drive shaft should I have made?

    Thanks!

  7. problem solved... long story short the carb was built with poor quality parts and was causing things to hang up. After pulling it apart and taking a file to her she runs like a champ. After messing with the tuning I can only get my fuel economy to around 23-24mpg... probably the way i drive though.
  8. -Idles around 1900 rpm and cant get it to go down, idle screw all the way out -idle jets are 60 and 57 -Weber Carb -Stalls out when I quickly accelerate (was way worse with the 60-50 jetting) -then catches up. -If engine has been working hard or is hot it now diesels when i shut it down. -Mixing screw is 2.25 turns out -timing does seem to help anything, set @ 13 at 1250rpm, about 28 w/ vacuum advace at 2500rpm. -21-22mpg's -cant find an external vacuum leak, did the WD-40 spray test. -Vacuum reads 20 inches steady through all RPM and temperatures @ intake manifold. -Tried 65-5_ Jetting combinations and it went way rich and had troubles doing anything. -removed throttle linkage Any thoughts? -Could this be an adapter plate leak, except WD40 sprayed onto the gasket never effected the RPM's.
  9. I wish I had time to do a build like that. I have an 85 Brat and an 82 that I want to keep on the road. One reasonably original but the ability to have the fun and commute comfortably and the other just going over the top because I can. The 85 I want to keep "original" but functional as a modern commuter. I like old things and want to keep it that way but it does need help. Right now its getting old, unreliable and its time do get some serious service. I want to do a full overhaul including engine build, 5 speed d/r swap and drive shafts but this guy has no time. I need to find somebody with time and skills. Any extra build time I have is being eaten up with my 82 Brat conversion. I guess its more of an 07 STI conversion at this point. Complete running gear from one going into the body of the other... bet you can guess which way its going. (there will be pictures and all that to come... some day). Now that its been over a year how is the engine holding up, any changes made?
  10. Thought somebody might find this useful if you are having vacuum issues and want to learn a little more about your engine. You can make one of these with some fuel hose slipped onto an over the counter vacuum gauge, super cheap. ...my Brat holds steady at 20, I dont know if that is typical or not though for these cars.
  11. what jets are you running? I am having trouble as well. It appears to be lean with the 60 and 50 idle jets.
  12. I have a few old Brats all in disarray and I need some basic numbers. I am starting with my 85 with an EA81, it looks the most promising. What jets are people running in their Weber 32/36's? It comes with a 60 main idle and a 50 secondary idle and I cant get it to run right. It hardly will idle below 1k rpm. Mixing screw at 2.5 out and it runs at 1700 but drives like balls. Around 2500 rpm or when it goes into the primaries it bogs down and takes a while to get over the hump if Im not on a hill. If its a hill it struggles for power to kick over and I start loosing precious speed. My top speed is only 55-60, used to be 75 or so even with my bad carb. Idle speed screw isnt engaged. Timing... My total timing is at 37.5. Thats what I have at full vacuum advance at 2500rpm on a warm engine. My base is around 11, little high i know but its hard since making it idle low end isnt happening right now.. Where is your at? I have been messing with both and still fighting it. Compression is ok, no emissions stuff, fuel filters newish.
  13. Good call on this setup. Too bad I already snipped the lead ferrel off the end before I saw this. The Redline set up is poorly designed. I dont trust it at all. All the load rests on a micro cotter pin and the clamping design damages the cable.
  14. I have no problem hacking and fabbing a new tunnel if I need, it will need a bunch of modifications just to get the shift linkage to fit and work properly anyway. Do I need an adapter plate or anything to put the engine onto this trans?
  15. I have an EJ22T donor car, and complete drivetrain out of an 07 STI, minus the engine. Is it possible to mate these together? I also have a thread on building the piss out of a EJ22T if you have thoughts on that. Its all going in an 85 Brat.
