  1. Thanks! Bookmarked the page.
  2. Hey thanks! appreciate everyone's input and :)patience while I stumble thru looking for good info.
  3. Which EJ25 is best to use, the 97 to 99? sounds like it's best to avoid the 96. Thanks
  4. Thanks Isaac, that sounds like a smart way to do it, and saves a lot of swapping effort.
  5. Thanks, I appreciate your experience and input! Knowing what not to do is just as important as what is best to do.
  6. Thanks GD. I'm sure someday I'll be well versed in Subaru-ness, but until then I appreciate your willingness to share the wealth of knowledge you have amassed thru hard work and experience. I have years of experience with mitsubishis, toyotas, nissans and isuzus but they don't convert well to these beasts. Looks like I'll be researching the Frankenmotor! Thanks bro.
  7. Looks like the EJ22 is a common swap option for 80's DL's. Does anyone know what the weight difference is between the EJ22 and EJ25? What about dimensions-much larger or same size? Here's why I'm asking: Going to replace my worn out EA82 with either of these 2 choices and looking at pros and cons both ways. I'd like to swap in a dual range 5spd at the same time and I don't know if there are problems doing so with the EJ25. I had a Forester with the bigger motor and loved the torque it had at low rpms, which is ideal for off road use. That's my intent-larger tires and mild lift to get ground clearance and traction as a good daily driver with decent off road capability. Not interested in building a monster truck, just good dual sport usage. I'm sure someone is asking "why do you want to do such a thing?"-my response? Because I feel like it! If this irks you, console yourself by listening to Barry Manilow on your 8 track in your AMC Pacer plastered with Walter Mondale stickers. I know the EJ22 is bullet proof and has great power specs-I have access to both for my swap and would like good info before making the move. Is the power from the EJ25 overkill for such a light vehicle? Is the EJ22 a better match? I'd love to hear from those with actual experience, absolutely not interested in hearing about how wonderful the EA82 is and "how dare you mess with perfection and desecrate Subaru's honor and legacy by bastardizing it with an engine swap in your earth-destroying selfish baby-killing lust for power and world dominance and anytime you modify an 80's Subaru God kills a kitten." Any thoughts?
  8. I've searched the stickies and posts but can't find any info on a 6 lug swap on a DL. Other than using XT components for a 5 lug swap, has anyone found a successful way to get 6 or am I dreaming? I know many Japanese 4x4 trucks share a 6 lug pattern that opens up some options for wheel/tire combos for off road applications, which I am interested in for my 88 DL. Not interested in making a monster truck, just after a mild lift and good traction in moderate trail driving. Just fishing here! Don't hate me if this is stupid-it's not my fault! Didn't get to select my genetic options (obviously)
  9. No hate here Always a pleasure to welcome a noob-being one myself:eek: Good job harvesting as much as possible before giving Old Faithful a Viking burial. Did the same thing to an 89 Trooper 2 years ago and I have to admit I almost cried! After 150k miles and many modifications it was almost like putting down an aged pet. In contrast, I've had a few cars that it gave me great pleasure to send to the crusher, mostly Fords, never a japanese built vehicle. I was able to save a few parts, the shift knob is in my Mighty Max daily driver, so it lives on in spirit. Your project sounds awesome! Here's hoping it actually comes to pass, and that you have a ton of fun in the process.
  10. Welcome! Sounds like you scored a sweet deal. I'm sure you'll love your little Subie. As far as modifying/improving it goes, as someone mentioned you have a tremendous amount of possibilities to choose from. You've already heard from folks with widely differing philosophies-those telling you not to change a thing, and those who aren't afraid to tinker or alter something good. I endorse the "modify it all you want" school of thought. After all, even Subaru didn't leave the little beast alone, did they?! Compare your car with one even 10 years newer and you'll find vast improvements and technological advancements. I believe this concept is called "Progress". Of course, you could leave it as stock as it is and live happily ever after, if you are content with low power and front wheel drive, but again, even Subaru didn't do that, and with good reason. The benefits of fuel injection, dual range 4wd, full time awd and more torque and horsepower are good things. I've done a few major mods to my own vehicles over the last 30 years and have had both great and disastrous results, but I learned a lot and really enjoyed it. If the internet and forums had been around, my learning curve would have been entirely different, and that's the point of this forum-to share expertise, experience and the avoidance of most disasters. Bottom line is how much are you willing to spend in both time and money; other than that you're pretty much only limited by your imagination! And how much fun do you want to have! Thus endeth the lecture.
  11. You know, I kind of sensed that aggressiveness but passed it off to global warming. Thanks for the warning! All I need is a little more automotive mayhem and carnage in my driveway and the neighbors will have me locked up-again. By the way, I remember reading an article in Subaru Freak a few years ago that warned about the females of the species exhibiting extreme territorial behavior to other makes. They actually made a documentary and I remember a particularly gruesome episode when an owners girlfriend parked her VW Cabriolet a little too close. Parts everywhere. I'm sure someone besides me remembers.
  12. Quite the score, there bro. I'm green with envy and droolin:-\
