  1. If it's on incorrectly the axle nut will slowly loosen and you'll get front end slop. I don't understand how the OP didn't notice the axle nut was loose before it finally just came off and he lost his hub. I'd imagine there would have been some cues lol.
  2. "Somebody will correct me if I'm wrong though." See? Haha! If they are original, i don't think they have any words stamped. I've gotten new ones that did say out though.
  3. There's two pieces of hardware behind the axle nut ; a big cone shaped washer against the hub, then a slightly concaved washer, then the nut. If the cone washer is worn (it will have a ridge on it) it will cause the axle nut to back off. I got my replacement for a worn one from a junkyard car. Now the concaved washer that goes between the axle nut and the cone shaped one I'm pretty sure goes on with the outward curve TOWARD the cone shaped one. Somebody will correct me if I'm wrong though. Oh and about the fuel pump; you can use a fuel pump from early 90s Ford F-series trucks that have dual tanks. The pump for the auxiliary tank. It's much cheaper, and a dime a dozen. Search around the site for information about it. Good luck! Nice job just throwing everything together and getting the car back home. Vigilance!
  4. I try backing off the nut to the top of the stud and then hammering the shi- out of the side of the hub and usually it pops.
  5. Beck arnley is good stuff too. Whenever i see a Loyale or a GL around here, it's like I've seen a unicorn. I know of three. Excluding my 2.
  6. In their catalogue, 92776 is the part number for 23 spline. 92775 is 25.
  7. Both! One to drive and one to resell in 15 years.
  8. Front pass. Side axle on the 87. Also put in new tie-rods on that side as well. Maybe later this week if it warms up again I'll put the new inner and outer on the driver's side too.
  9. So I'm up to 79,xxx on the 87 GL and 97,xxx on the 93 Loyale.
  10. I've run with just the electric fan, no problems (that's how my GL is right now actually), I've run with just the clutch fan, no problems. Hell for about 2 weeks I ran with NO fans whatsoever, in July, with no overheating issues except if I was stuck in traffic for more than 10 minutes, then temp would start rising. You'll be fine*. *Assuming the rest of your cooling system is operating properly.
  11. Rear axle on the back of my 87 finally installed. First one I ordered came in the mail and didn't have the stub axle on the end. I still had the cup and stud from my old axle in my car so I took it apart and was going to use the stub shaft from that but the SOAB would NOT come off. Car sat on jackstands for a week until my 2nd rear axle came in the mail and that (thankfully) still had the stub shaft on it so I just threw it right in. Still haven't gotten the stub separated for the first one yet though. Also replaced a tire on the 93 because of a broken belt causing incredibly vicious steering wheel wobble. (Think impossible to drive without using two hands) It's been a productive day. Tomorrow, new front axle in the 87.
  12. Coming back to this thread to confirm; Bad tire on the front driver's side, as suggested twice above. $30 on a used tire and problem solved. No more wobble! (it was BAD too!)
  13. I've had good luck with aftermarket fans on eBay. Slim ones.
  14. 81EA81, thanks for the blowup. Packing, eh? Interesting thing to call a little damper. That's a great idea about using some of the boot, I have what's left of the old boots to chop up, plus the big "rubber band" type rubber that went over the clamps on the original axles, so that's great food for thought, thanks for the idea. grossgary, I understand what you're saying, but I don't think that's the case here. I haven't gotten the cup to budge a millimeter. Nothing, nada, zip. It's stuck on there damn good. I'm done with it though, and I got my answer about the "Packing" rubber on the end. Now it gets handed over to somebody in a shop. Lacking a vice was probably my downfall this time. Hoping whomever has their hand on it next doesn't eff up my axle stub while getting it all apart. Thanks for the advice and especially for the exploded view.
  15. Soaked in carb cleaner, thousands of applications of PB blaster, BFH, then a B-erFH, Insane amounts of heat, nothing. I've given up. Part of the problem is that it's just the outer cup with the stub, all off the car. No axle on it. Made it sorta difficult to get good swings on it but regardless, I give up (which I HATE to do). Gonna have a shop have a go at it tomorrow. Also expecting my 2nd axle to be delivered tomorrow, hopefully it has the axle stub on it. I do have a question though; All the axle stub pictures I've seen on here, none of them have this rubber piece that mine does. Right where the axle stub mates with the cup, there's a thick rubber ring pressed in there as well. Am I going to be alright without this rubber ring, because it's pretty much destroyed now....I'm thinking it was there as a vibration damper and maybe a dust cover for the bearings. Little concerned about it. Thoughts? Experiences?
  16. +1. Raise up the rear end, take the wheel off. Two bolts at the top of the strut, one pinch at the bottom.
  17. All of those listed things have proven unsuccessful. I gave up and decided I would just re-use the cup, but now I can't figure out how to remove the race/bearings/joint assembly from the outer cup. This whole job is really turning in to an absolute PITA. I *should* have just bought remanned axles with the axle stub included on them.
  18. Anybody have any tips to separate the rear axle spindle from the outer cv cup? http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/94586-gl-awd-rear-cv-axle-removal-problem/ Post # 7 in that linked thread shows you the stub and the axle cup I'm talking about. Rear pass. side of a 4wd 87 GL. I have a new axle to put in the rear but it comes with no axle stub, so I am trying to remove the axle stub from the axle cup. I'm about to give up for today because that SOAB will *not* come apart. I don't have a vice, and I don't have a torch, which are two things I think would be helping me greatly at the moment.
  19. Wow, i searched on that page and they have an 82 brat coming up with a starting bid of 275 $. Crazy.
  20. Stupid question, but we all make stupid mistakes sometimes; you're not out of gas are you?
  21. Awesome! Thanks zuk! I think those turbines would look awesome on the Loyale. Thought it was a gl!
  22. Wow, those rims/tires are insane on the XT! Love the way the GL looks with the alloys! Are you hanging on to the rings and center caps for the steelies that were on the GL?
