  1. Didn't use speed control during the speedo head problem, so can't comment about that. But the trip/mileage counters worked while the speedometer failed. Replaced the speedometer head following 99OBW's excellent instructions in a previous thread (saved $s by ordering on-line, and no labor charge since the speedo head was replaced by my son), and haven't had a problem since. Thanks for your input, edoutback!
  2. I also ordered my 99 OBW speedo head from 1stsubaruparts.com out of Auburn, WA (best price on-line). The price at the time of order (August 2004) was $106.46 plus $6.95 shipping, but still less than the dealership wanted. Since my son replaced it in about 20 minutes (after great instructions from member 99OBW--see previous threads on this subject), we also saved on the installation cost and the tax on the part and the installation---a total savings of approx. $175. I've kept a record of the mileage on the original speedo head, and will just add it to the new mileage reading whenever the car is inspected. I'd opt for a new speedo head.
  3. Thanks for the correction. I meant removing the part of the dash behind the steering wheel, which, I assume is the cluster. (My son has removed the cluster twice, so a third time should be the charm--I hope!)
  4. Thanks, 99OBW, you've come through with the info my son needs to install the speedo head. It seems to be an easy enough installation--once the dash is removed! Another question: Will the car's mileage reading drop down to zero once the new speedo head is installed? From what I recall from a previous post, yours did. Thanks again for your help!
  5. If I order a speedometer head for my 1999 OBW, is this what the speedometer head looks like (behind the dash instrument cluster)? Or does the speedo head attach to this part? I'd like some comfirmation before I order a new speedo head.
  6. According to BabelFish, "Avete un amico di ragazza?" means "Do you have a girlfriend?"
  7. From culling info from previous posts, it looks like I'll have to replace the speedometer head in my 1999 OBW. Can any of you Subaru gurus advise what this part looks like? Is this the panel behind the dashboard cluster (when dash is removed)? The speedometer/odometer only starts working when the engine is warm--after driving 20-30 minutes. I don't know where the Vehicle Speed Sensor is located in the engine, but before the speedometer head is ordered my son will be tightening connections behind the dash, and hopefully can locate the VSS in the engine compartment and see if it is properly seated. TIA for any info!
  8. Thanks for the speedo head replacement instructions; I'll pass them on to my son. BTW, the dealership service rep mentioned something about the sensor to the transmission (?). Should this be a concern? walkerb My DH always answers my rhetorical questions!
  9. Re; 1999 Subaru Legacy Outback, 2.5 DOHC: I've a problem in that the speedometer doesn't activate until the car's engine has been running for at least 20-30 minutes. I've been told that I need a replacement speedometer head. My son is willing to see if this can be fixed by him, but I'm unable to locate a repair manual for the car. Is this something that must be fixed by a mechanic or by the dealership (really expensive!). Any thoughts out there? Thanks for any advice on this problem. bew
