  1. to start I am dealing w/ a domestic 98 Legacy GT( 2.5 L ) M/T OK,... My 2.5 is finally about done. It has been slowly increasing its oil leak rate to the point of non-driveability. (aprox 1/2 quart of oil per 1 hours drive). This is enough to smoke, stink and get the ENTIRE underside of the car wet (hey at least it wont rust this winter!) I have been looking around and searching the forums and have a few questions still. I am pretty good at working on things and figuring them out. ( I do it for a living although not on cars) In my experience it is usually always easier and faster to do entire swaps than to fix major internal problems. (My motor is leaking BADLY from the front, under timing belt covers. Also my clutch has been squeaking under neutral position). Due to these issues I have been seriously considering swapping the motor/tranny as a complete unit. I found a JDM Subaru Legacy BG5 EJ20H Twin Turbo M/T & Engine Set which seems like it would be a good candidate. (not to mention more powerful and fun to have in the car.) It comes with all intake piping, intercooler, wiring harness, fuel pump ,fuse sets and crossmembers/mount plates. I read somewhere in the forums that the Twin turbo JDM motor wont work in a left hand drive car....???? Is this because of the power steering pump and steering rack setup? HAS ANYONE DONE A SWAP LIKE THIS?> I need to move on this. I love the GT's but HATE the motor so I am reluctant to fix the 2.5 powerplant anyones input who knows anything about any of these 2 powerplants or vehicles is greatly appreciated!   3. So I bought a semi-wrecked WRX,... banged up a bit but drives str8 and runs hard! I need manuals! It has the auto dimming mirror w/compass but it is confused as to which way is which,... it thinks East is West! Also anyone with any connections for parts please leave me a post! I need passenger side front fender, headlight, fog light, marker light, front bumper cover and hmmm,.... would it be possible for them to be white? Any help is appreciated.
  4. If you have done this before on other cars you will have a breeze on the suby,.. just dont overtighten the nut and burn up your wheelbearings like I did last time I did it,...
  5. I replaced my front wheel bearings and halfshafts about 2 months ago on my 98 Legacy GT. I had serious probelms with the passenger side ( halfshaft stuck in the bearing and rough to press out the bearings also ). I am pretty sure it did some damage to the spindle at that time ( the metal showed some small stress cracks but only on the outer portions of the spindle ). It all went back together well enough and turned freely with no noises. I drive ALOT and now I am starting to get noises/ vibrations that seem to be wheel bearing related (arrgghh!) reeeet reeet reeeet. I guess my questions is this- Is the spindle the same on a Legacy L as it is on the GT's? I know it will be alot easier to find an L spindle than a GT if they are different,. Is the difference just the suspension setup? Thanks for any clues. 86K on 98' Legacy GT Std Tranny.
  6. Doing routine Maint. the other day I came across a strange problem. I was checking out the vanity lights in the sunvisors ( very dim ) when I noticed that WHILE OPEN THEY MAKE THE ENGINE COOLING FANS RUN. This only happens when the car is running. You can sit there and open and close the visor making both the fans turn on and off. It has a newer battery and holds a good charge. My cigarette lighter socket also does not properly let my cell phone charge. I am guessing that it is a ground issue or a short but have no idea where to start looking for it. Any ideas appreciated. This is a very unique problem and for now it is fun to trick my friends with. I have no trouble with it overheating or any other problems for that matter (well excpet the old piston slap ). All the fuses are good also. 98' Legacy GT
  7. Hey I am looking for the performance specs of the different subaru motors. Is there a good website with this info?... I am mainly interested in the 2.5 and the 2.2 (both turbo and non) so I can compare this info and find a motor for my 98GT which suffers from typ Ph.1 problems @ 85k mi. Thanks!
  8. I got word that there is no such thing as a JDM 2.5 motor. Is this true?... If so was the 2.5 offered anywhere else besides the U.S. and Canada? Also I am curious as to what variations of this motor have been produced. I have a phase 1 2.5 in my 98GT and have problems with wrist pin knock at 85k mi. @ this point I do not want to pay the dealer to fix it and just want to be able to do a direct engine swap and then trade this vehicle for a newer one that does not have the characteristic problems of the 2.5 ph1 ( I also want a manual tranny). I found an engine on ebay but he thinks its an AVCS from JDM,... but I am pretty sure since it has 4 cams, no turbo and LOOKS EXACTLY like my motor that it is not what he thinks it is,... here is the link.   9. OK so Let me get this straight.... If it is indeed a 2.5 with DOHC it is a phase 1 motor, the same as what my 98 GT has,... so I will not need to worry about any wiring differences or computer changes,... just a direct swap. Or is there another 2.5 w/ DOHC I dont know about?

The other day I had found a website that had ALL kinds of comparison information between all the different subaru motors made including all the phase designations and MY designations,... now I cant seem to find it. All help appreciated. I am looking for a new motor for my 98 GT with piston slap issues.
  11. Hi everyone I am new to this message board and need to pick somebodys brain. I have a 98 Legacy GT sedan with the typical piston slap that seems to have affected other lower end components (possibly wrist pin)(85K mi) . I found a JDM EJ25DE AVCS for a reasonable price as I know the dealer wants a huge fortune to change the shortblock. the problem is this,.... I am pretty sure my motor is NOT AVCS (which I am pretty sure is a variable valve timing). It should bolt up,... yes. But what other mods would I have to do to use this motor? Any options or comments are appreciated!
