  1. This isn't just a small leak, it's pretty well blown. I guess for $5 it might be worth the try though. Still want to sell it though. What do you think like $700?
  2. 163k miles, 2.2 liter brighton wagon blown head gasket. No knocks or bad noises. Just loses coolant from head gasket. Can't drive longer than 10 mins or it will lose coolant. Confirmed head gasket from mechanic. They wanted $1600. I declined and just want to get rid of it. Has been parked for like 8 months, still starts up. Thanks! I would fix it myself if I had the shop to work on it.
  3. It also received a new radiator the first time it over heated. It has seen 3 different mechanics in the past that could not figure out what is causing this. That was back when the problem was minor. Now it is parked so it won't over heat again. I thought for sure I solved the problem when I noticed the radiator fan fuse had blown out. I will get that test. Will it still be accurate if it hasn't been driven for a couple months? I should mention, it also slowly loses coolant, but the coolant is going somewhere...likely burning off or something...heh
  4. 99 subaru legacy brighton 167k miles Newer clutch, (20k miles) 5 spd manual, runs except that it overheats going up big hills or when exiting the highway. Even if it was a simple fix like a radiator fan (which I have ruled out) The car has been overheated atleast 8 times and probably needs a rebuild. Is it worth $1,000? $750? Just trying to get a general idea. Do parts subarus have a higher value than other junker cars? I would LOVE to rebuild it myself, but i've heard that even the pro's hate rebuilding these engines. I can barely change a timing belt on my mazda.... Thanks!!!!!!!
  5. It turns out, the fuse for the main fan was blown. (I wish I had checked this first .... I have a theory on how this happened. The car overheated from a headgasket leak, which pushed the water out of the resevoir. The connector for the fan is directly below this. This connector then got submerged in all the water coming out and blew out the fuse. It's interesting though that one of the fans will still run with a blown fuse.
  6. I'm looking at my fuses and there is a 20A main Fan, above that is a 10A unit back-up. Why would they be different amps should I still swap them to find out?
  7. Wow this gets even more complex. Thanks very much for the reply BTW. I thought that when you turn on the air conditioning both fans turn on. This is how I tested it by turning on the AC. Although when it overheated today, I popped the hood and only 1 fan was running.
  8. My car 99 legacy Brighton 2.2l So I have been having an off and on overheating problems for some time now. I just now found what has been causing it!!! One of the radiator fans (passenger side) has stopped spinning. This problem fits the symptoms perfectly to the T. Car overheats when stopped, but does not overheat on highway. I thought for sure it was a faulty fan and was about to go out and buy a new one. Thankfully I had some sense to test this faulty fan. Since there are 2 fans on the radiator I swapped them. The supposed faulty fan worked just fine on the other side. And visa versa, the passenger side fan will not spin. Is it as simple as bad wiring? Because if it was a faulty relay wouldn't both fans stop working? Is this something a novice could fix? Or do I need to take it to the shop? I've never worked on wiring before. Grrrr Thanks!
  9. How do I know if it's a SOHC 2.2? My manual says the 2.2 Liter model is either the EJ221, or the EJ223. I really hate non specific manuals
  10. Wow thanks for an amazing post. I am bookmarking this thread so that someday I might attempt this. I have done quite a few DIY projects in the past and the thing that always limits me is tools and the frustration of hard to reach bolts. I love working on cars but someday I dream of having my own lift
  11. Yes that is a good point I should not do a rebuild there could be more damage to this engine. What do you think about an engine swap from an imported engine? are there any coolant leaks? Well not that I know of but I put water in from time to time, so a very slow one yes. has the thermostat ever been replaced? about a year ago. is it a subaru thermostat? not sure I do know before it would overheat when going up hills, but was fine on flat ground. Now it is worse. It's got a new clutch and I like the car a lot. Most subarus in the pacific NW cost 4k just for an old 120+ mileage one!!! So it's not like I can just get another one without many problems for a good price.
  12. Oh and my last question. Is there any EASY way to really know 100% if it's the head gasket thats causing the problem? The oil looks fine, no coolant in the oil.
  13. I have a 1999 Subaru Legacy Brighton, 2.2L. 165k miles Shes pretty beat up and some might consider it a hunk of junk. But I am still in love with my station wagon. Here is the problem. We took her on a trip that involved driving over a mountain pass. After about 10 miles of driving straight up hill I noticed sluggishness, I look down and the temp is all the way over the H. Ever since this incident the car will overheat after about 20 miles of driving. We all suspect it's the head gasket, however the oil looks fine. The coolant reservoir is very stained, but any old car looks like that. It has a new radiator and water pump as of a year ago. The car is really thrashed and I don't even know if it's worth the cost of redoing the head gasket. My questions for you 1) Is this 99 Legacy 2.2L the engine with the infamous head gasket problem? 2) How much is a junker 99 legacy worth in parts? 3) Should I rebuild or get an imported replacement engine? Thoughts? This engine has overheated probably 5 times in the past year, so i'm even hesitant on a rebuild.
