  1. thanks, like I said in my other reply she puts it in first or reverse and it goes in when car is off, (actually with clutch in or not) when she turns it on it lurches slowly. does that still indicate misadjusted cable or cracked clutch release fork? Is there any way I could explain to her to check it? Unf she is 2K miles away from me so I am little help at this point. If it was a misadjusted clutch could I explain to her how to try and adjust? Im assuming if its a cracked clutch release fork, we are talking a whole clutch replacement job? Thanks again.
  2. thanks she tried this and the car lurches forward, does that indicate anything in particular?
  3. Hi, My sister has a 95 legacy and she is having an issue that just started. She said it was real hard to get into gear the other day, and she forced it into 2nd and drove home somehow. Got it home and now she said (when running) it wont go in any gear. When she shuts it off she can put the clutch in and it will go in all gears with car off. Start it and no gears at all. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
  4. That's great and thankyou! Its a 99 with 141k and looks pretty nice for only $2600. (makes me think why am I not driving one of these older wagons?, they really are one of the best cars ever made) appreciate it!
  5. Hi, My sister is looking for a reliable car in Calif, she needs something and has less than 3k so I told her about the great legacy 2.2 and said she pretty much can't go wrong. Also told her about this forum where a community actually helps each other. She is looking at a wagon, 1999 2.2 with 141k and it says only thing wrong is a power steering leak and speedometer cable not working. I was wondering where she might be able to look for the leak, and the worst it could be? If it is a rack, is that something I could do for her, I am pretty handy and have done a lot of repairs on cars. Worst case scenario, I guess she could pay someone but do the racks on these go? Any info would be appreciated! And thanks!
  6. Update, removed starter took to AZ, they did have a station to test, so he tested and nothing, then he tried again and it started smoking, concluded bad starter. We got another from a different AZ and it worked. Car is starting and running. The good news is rebuilt starters from AZ are only $80, and next time I would suggest testing before we leave store. Problem solved This site is really helpful, but its not just the site, its the people that are members. THANKS TO ALL!! (why cant chevy have a site this helpful)
  7. I think thats what were gonna find, will know tomm, and thanks I will pass on info about replacing contacts.
  8. Auto, I will pass on info, and thanks not sure what he is gonna do. And thanks
  9. Yeah I have too, can say I have gotten some cheaper parts but never a complete defect. I checked several times to make sure we had jumper cables on correctly, because thats exactly the way it was reacting. Last time I doubled checked and when we hooked up to sub battery it sparked and then started smoking. I said lets remove cables from battery on sub and connect jumper cables to pos and neg cables (bypassing battery on subaru completely to rule out battery short). We did that making sure all was correctly hooked up, and same thing major spark as we put last cable to negative. So we pulled off immediately. I know its not the car using to jump either, because someone next to us needed a jump and it worked fine.Taking starter off and returning to autozone tomm morning (they say they can test although ofcourse they are already sayin it must be the starter cable). Everything worked fine yesterday except starter not working like it had in the past year. Will post results to maybe help someone else in future.
  10. Recently signed on to forum now brother having starter problems, so he asked if I could get help., His starter had been having issues for the past year, with a hammer and a tap it and several turns of the key it would eventually start. Problem was getting worse so he decided to replace starter. Went to Autozone, and got a rebuilt starter. We replaced starter, and thought for sure we were a go, then hooked it all up, put battery cables back on then nothing no lights, no door sound no nothing. thought it must be battery. Hooked up jumper cables and a strange spark emitted from his postive side as he put the cable on (checked to be sure cables were on right and were). So disconnected jumper cables. Thought to take starter cable off of starter and did so, rehooked jumper cables to battery then opened door, sound on , and lights came on. Rehooked starter again and tried a second time, same thing almost as if we had jumper cables backwards, spark and smoke as we hooked last one up on his battery. But jumper cables were on correctly pos to pos neg to neg. Wondering if starter might be just defective? Any help appreciated and thankyou. oh btw its a 95 legacy 2.2L
  11. [ thanks can you explain what happened? Did it overheat or did the motor just die?
  12. Thanks for the reply, was wondering how you could tell if was a 2.5 with the DOHC Phase I EJ25D motor in it? Is it by vin# or year, or just plain unluck that you would end up with one of these?
  13. Hi, My brother has a sub wagon with the 2.2L motor, think its a 95, amazes me how good the car runs. My question is did Subaru ever address the HG issue on 2.5's and if they did what year? I read elswhere they were still having issues atleast in 2000, was wondering beyond that. Did anyone ever try any over the counter gasket fixer on any 2.5 L motor and have it work? I normally would never believe in an easy fix, but I have a chevy van with a 350 motor that was loosing antifreze, had a bad head gasket, which finally ended in a loss of cylinder. I was down to 7 cylinders, and was at a rebuild point. Neighbor suggested this stuff at orielly's (it was blue in a bottle) and it cost like $75 dollars. I put it in, thought it didnt work, then let it sit overnight, sure enough went out the next morning and all 8 cylinders were back. That was 6 months ago and alot of heavy driving in high heat since (texas) and sure enough it still is running perfect. So I thought maybe someone gave it a try on a 2.5. Thanks
