  1. Thanks guys! Yall hit the nail on the head. Went to the junkyard and got a used fuel pump but genuine subaru. Now she's back running strong. This forum kicks rump roast! Cheers
  2. Howdy, I have a 96 legacy outback with 2.2L and 5 spd. I've been hearing this electrical humming noise coming from the rear of the car, and then the other night while driving up the hill home, the car just sputtered a little and died instantly. I tried recranking it w/o success, so I towed it home and thought maybe the timing belt went out. I took out the radiator and checked the timing belt and it was fine. So Im a little stumped as to what the problem is. Is there a fuel pump in the gas tank that could potentially fail? Any thoughts or help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Cheers
  3. Well played there kind folks. it was definitely the hanger bushings. can't believe i couldnt figure that out on my own. thanks for the help. All better now. cheers-will
  4. Howdy. I have a 96 legacy outback with 5 speed and ej22. I keep hearing a thudding type noise near the rear passenger wheel when i let the clutch out. it also makes a humming noise when I'm in 5th gear cruising along and take my foot off the accelerator. I'm thinking it might need a new wheel bearing or axle? Any ideas or help would be sweet. I have changed the tranny and rear differential fluid, but it didn't help the matter. cheers- will
  5. I just got done replacing my clutch last weekend, and hoped it would stop this noise that keeps haunting me when I release the clutch when shifting gears. The noise comes from the passenger rear and isnt as bad when im shifting to 4th or 5th gear. Im thinking it could be something with the driveshaft, differential, or axle? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Cheers- Will
  6. Howdy, Haven't been here since I sold my last 87 Gl wag... but i finally got another scooby. this time its a 96 outback, 5 spd, 223k for 1600. It drives great straight, but as soon as you turn, a noise and vibration occurs in the drivers front wheel. sometimes the noise is worse like at different speed. thinkin either replacing the bearing or axle or both. what do yall think? It also has a slight hum in the rear passenger. i think that's gotta need a new bearing. as for the 2.2, seems to be runnin good. no oil leaks or coolant and held 65mph in 5th climbing some big hills on the ride home. I'm definitely going to immediately change the oil and coolant, but was wondering if yall think i should do timing belt as well? Ill try and put a pic of it up soon. much better lookin than my GL... thanks for any and all help or info. cheers- will
  7. Howdy, I left my 87 GL wagon in ruff shape when I left for New Zealand, and need to fix her up when I get back. She was leakin a lot of oil from either the head or main seal or both? So I'm willing to pull the motor and replace seals, belts, and whatever else ya'll think I should do while I have her on the operatin table? I have a Chilton manual, but any other resources that would help in the process would be much appreciated. Also, what kind I gasket should I use to replace the head gasket? Thanks in advance. Cheers- Will Pruett
  8. Right on JJ. I appreciate the help. I have located a few GLs at a Pik N Pull near me so im gonna go see if i can find some good parts. Cheers
  9. Howdy, Just bought an 87 GL wagon with EA82 FI for $750. Its got 230K on it and its in decent shape. Took it to get smogged ( i live in Cali) and it wouldn't pass b/c its idling too high. The dude there said I needed a new EGR valve, so I did that, but its still idling too high. Called a Subie expert and he said its the Idle Air Control valve. What do yall think? And if it truly is the IAC, how can I fix the problem for less than the $300 AutoZone is asking for a new one. I appreciate any and all help. Cheers-- Will
  10. Greetings. I'm the new owner of a 85 Subaru GL wagon. It has the EA82 engine and the Odo reads 163K. The other day, I was going up a big hill near my home of Grass Valley, CA, and I noticed the temperature gauge going towards the red. I pulled over, shut off the engine, and popped the hood to find coolant erupting from the overflow reservoir. My heart sank through the pavement. So, I let the car completely cool, re-filled it with anti-freeze, and re-started the engine and began driving. When I started going uphill again, the car seemed to have very little power and even sputtered a bit. It didn't overheat again, but I found out why it did in the first place. The electric fan has been ghetto-wired to a switch under the dash, which quit working, and stopped the fan. It drives fine unless under a heavy load... i.e.- going uphill. I have been too worried to continue driving the car. What do you guys think is the problem? Possibly a blown head? Let me know how to get this old Scooby back running strong. Oh yeh, haven't seen any coolant leaks, oil in coolant, coolant in oil, or anything obviously wrong. I appreciate the feedback. Cheers-- Will Pruett
