  1. Ok thank you for the insight. Tranny mounts were replaced a couple months ago while I was chasing down a mystery vibration. Now I have a new mystery vibration.... Starting with the motor mounts this time.
  2. I'm looking at replacing the motor mounts in my 84 gl. I went to Rock Auto and found they have reasonably priced mounts. Only problem is there is an option for front or rear mounts. I've spent a considerable amount of time under that car and I'm fairly certain there is only a left and a right motor mount. Can anybody shed some light on this? I don't want to buy the wrong stuff. http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/subaru,1984,gl,1.8l+h4,1268344,engine,motor+mount,5552
  3. I have an 84 GL. Had a 4 speed in it when I latched onto it, I agree with bratsrus, the 4 speed sucked, particularly the low range, it wasn't even really low range. So I did the 5 speed conversion. Definitely the way to go for me.
  4. Replaced transmission mounts over the weekend. No more issues with vibration. Thanks for all the input..
  5. Got back under the suby today and took a closer look at the tranny mounts. One of the mounts is separated from the rubber, and the other mount is just shot. Really hoping that's my problem..
  6. Amazing something so small could cause such a huge problem. Thanks for the tip..
  7. I hope this isn't the issue. It's not leaking any oil yet.... Nice write up by GLoyale though. I'd have a heck of a time replacing that seal without instruction. It's been 25 years since I've tore into a tranny. My motor and tranny mounts will be here by the end of the week, will be installing first part of next week.
  8. I've never had the alignment done in that car. The last set of tires I went through on that car wore evenly by the time they were ready to be replaced. No indication of misalignment on the old set of tires... Not discounting that suggestion though. I will keep it in the back of my mind if the mounts don't fix the issue. As far as the inner tie rods, I have not checked the condition of those. I will crawl under there in the morning and see what I can find. Thank you for the suggestions.
  9. I replaced the clutch, pressure plate and flywheel in 2012 when I did the 5 speed conversion, about 13,000 miles ago, and I can't say I'm feeling the shake in any one part of the car, like the steering wheel, or the gear shifter, it's the whole car. I did check bushings on the sway bar while I was under there yesterday, and nothing looked or felt abnormal. No missing nuts or bolts that I could find either. As for the control arms, I was handling those quite a bit when changing out the lower ball joints, I didn't notice any play that seemed abnormal.
  10. I have a 1984 Subaru GL with a 5 speed. A few days ago I was going down the highway at 55, approaching a slight incline, when I gave it some throttle to maintain my speed the car started to shake. Felt like a wheel was about to fall off. My immediate thought was that one of my front axles was about to go, seeing as how the boots have been torn for some time now. So I take the car home and put new axles in the front, as well as replace the lower ball joints with new ones while I was at it. Took the car for a test drive and the wobble, or vibration is still there. Speed and engine rpm does not affect it, and it is only when the engine is under a load. My next thought was to eliminate the possibility of having issues in the rear end. Even though virtually no torque is applied to the rear end in two wheel drive as I understand it. Anyhow, I removed the rear driveline and test drove again, the problem is still there. Tires are practically new, less than 3000 miles and they are balanced and properly inflated, bearings feel good with no play, tie rod ends are in good shape. The only other thing I can think of is motor and/or tranny mounts, all of which I have ordered this morning. I am posting this thinking maybe I have overlooked something.. Thanks.
  11. Completed 5 speed conversion in my 84 GL a couple months ago.. I've put about 500 miles on her since then and I've decided it was worth every penny.
  12. Removed the driveline and plugged hole as you suggested. The vibration is definitely coming from the driveline. I must say I am surprised, as I said before the machine shop I took it to is known for doing quality work. Good call skishop, thanks for the help.
  13. A few weeks ago I just completed a 5 speed conversion on my 84 GL 2 door. Everything seems to be working fine other than this vibration above 55 mph. My initial thought was that the driveline needed to be rotated 180 degrees, which I did and that did help some. During the swap I had the rear driveline extended to accommodate the shorter 5 speed by a reputable machine shop so I'm fairly confident the driveline was well balanced in that respect. I remember when I installed the 5 speed it seemed like a snug fit in the tunnel, moreso than the 4 speed. Could the tranny be up against the body of the car causing this vibration or should I be looking at something else? Thanks.......
  14. Thanks for the research. Although in the quote this guy is saying 55 ft/lbs of torque on the flywheel to crank bolts, my repair manual only called for 35 lbs. And then 40 lbs. on the drive plate to flywheel bolts... So that is what I did. Like I said though, if this causes me an issue I'll just pull the tranny back out and go from there. Thanks again TajMan.
  15. Am I remembering correct, the 5-speed flywheel has a slightly different crankshaft bolt pattern being on the ea82 engine, and for installation on the ea81 engine the bolts go in but everything slightly loose and you want to rotate the flywheel furthest clockwise or counterclockwise before tightening bolts well w/ loctite? You may be correct, but I know nothing of this. The bolt pattern appeared to be the same, and everything felt and looked good when I torqued everything down. Once I am ready to try things out, which should be in the next week, I guess I'll find out. Worst case, I suppose I'll pull the tranny back out and fix the problem. Thank you for your thoughts....
