  1. I asked in my restoration thread but received no answers. So I will try again. Let it be known I am waiting for my Haynes to arrive so my part definitions may be wrong. I have spent many hours removing and cleaning all of the oil soaked dirt and crud from the undercarriage. I drove her again after being put back together and am thinking the oil leak is near the filter? Where the filter attaches to the block, or even where the feed attaches to the block, is this a place for leaks to occur? It is almost like the galley from the block, through the filter support is where the leak is coming from? Is this a common occurrence on a EA71? Are there gaskets in any of this? Just over night I had about a 4 inch circle. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.
  2. x2 on the welding of another nut on there. That would be quickest and best for grip.
  3. I just replaced CV's in my Brother's '81 only to find a bad reman CV. Not fun but after replacing again the clicking went away.
  4. What are those exact wheels and their size/offset please. Wanna throw some on my '80 like this. White wheels above.
  5. Lol at last comment. Ironically I am sure you will sell them.
  6. Guys I have been reading all day and need some answers form the people that know. I was told tha the stub bearings in the tranny were bad. I have the Brat in the air ready to get at it but I wanted to make sure of a couple things. other than too much movement, how would I know tha the carrier bearings are bad? The main reason I ask is because she is marking her territory pretty badly. It is golden in color and I know it is not engine oil. I truly believe it is the stub seals. So I bought some. I can't seem to locate the o-rings for the retainer plate. So, the Brat is 32, possibly never had the seals changed and i don't have a special tool to remove the plate. I am more than willing to try though. Do I need new o-rings and if so does anyone have size measurements? Based on the fact she leaks like a stuck pig and sprays it everywhere, I need to do this. To do it correctly you have to remove the plate. How seized could it be? Anyone tried this on such an old Brat? And, I have a ton of Redline MT-90 in my garage but from what I have read, I Shouldn't use it? Is this true and if so, what do you all recommend? I know of the cocktail and 75-90 options but I have this stuff on hand. Please advise. Jon
  7. Um, wow! That was a long one to read. Really beautiful little Subie though. I like the restoration process flow with all the pics. Nice to see he was able to get all those parts still?!
  8. From a noobs perspective on EA71 Brats I am satisfied with the power. Seems to pull the Brat around nicely. But this is my first Brat and EA71. As mentioned though, depends on what you want. I am content to keep her going with this engine.
  9. Thanks for the heads up Bendecker!!! My list so far: Steering wheel Shift Knobs Shift boots Center dash console Window crank Door latch bezels Spare tire Spare tire screw piece (sorry don't know name) Left fender Left door or skin Left and right blinker housings/lights/surrounds Left and right rear lenses for tails. Front Grill Exhaust Head rest and mounts for Jumpseats E-Brake boot? Seats Lower chrome on left hand side of Brat And just about another million things. Of priority are the lights and lenses of course.
  10. Speaking of lights and blinkers, I don't have a Haynes or Chilton as of yet but I need to at least get some bulbs in the front to make the signals work. Do any of you know the bulb type/size of the blinkers up front? Maybe even the running light bulbs too?
  11. The bumper is bolted but I would never use it again. Had a wild hair with the Sawzall that night, lol. Oh well, guess those seats will have to do. Finding parts for these is next to impossible. I have been scouring the web and local yards, nothing. Called Subaru in Boulder and found a single replacement rear lens and that is it! I am starting to doubt the restoration if I can't even find lights and blinkers. But I know these things take time so I have to be patient and keep searching.
  12. Cool, love it when you get no replies! Can someone comment on the seats at least?:popcorn:
  13. Well, I just picked her up from home to come back to work. I love this Brat! People were looking at me like I am crazy. Good for them, lol. Thought the gas gauge was busted so I put in a few bucks and the gauge rose. Temperature gauge works as well but cold air from the heater? Wonder what that is from - no hose connection? Only bad thing was the large amounts of front diff fluid where the output bearing leaked the last 2 days. Gotta get that done asap. Any ideas on how hard that will be? Gotta drop the tranny and engine for that one I am thinking.
  14. Inside she is really dirty. Found extra panels in there, all the skids are there too. Original tool kit is there as well. Please tell me these are original seats? Need handle surrounds and door card snaps, etc.. Steering wheel is toast but the horn works, lol. And no lower console?! So, I have my work cut out for me. She is not that bad in my opinion. Compared to what is out there this is a great little runner. Needs a clutch and output bearings. She will be restored as best I can and with some mods. Hope you all like her?! Jon
  15. SO, what is definitely wrong. I basically need a new fender on the drivers side, all corner lights and many other things. I cut that hideous bumper off - weighed about 50 pounds! Roof is perfect! No cracks in any of the glass and the rear windows still slide. Cleaned the front.
  16. My concerns were all there. Did I waste the money? Was this a bad Brat? I got her in the garage and started cleaning the bed. I cannot believe this but there is only a bit of surface rust anywhere to be found! For fun I threw the jumpseats in the bed: I got the drive her around the block and I am already in love. Gonna go drop off the 2011 WRX right now to drive the 1980 Brat, lol.
  17. Ok, I went and picked her up last Saturday. Note to self, do not tow Subaru's with Wranglers, lol. I had no choice as my truck fell through. So I drove 2 and a half hours to meet the guy halfway. When I first pulled up I was wondering what I got myself into. Then he fired it up and drove her off the trailer. Anyway. This is cool. When I picked her up: When I got home: Two free wheels and the stock exhaust, lol: Headlights all work, some blinkers, lol: Tailgate is perfect?!
  18. Sent pm about bezel/radio. Thanks.

  19. I might get flamed but I am learning. Can this be done on an EA71?
  20. No joke?! that is incredible to say the least. Gues she isn't a diamond in the rough then, lol. Got anymore gen 1 parts?!
  21. I know I am blowing up my own thread but what do you all think about the general condition of the Brat itself? This will be my first resto on a vehicle and have yet to see what I am getting myself into. From what I have seen in pics she is pretty rust free aside from the typical fender rust and that door/fender that needs to be replaced. Any insights about what you see above would be appreciated. Thanks.
  22. Sorry about the wrong section. I looked and couldn't decide. Thanks for the info on the headrests. I can easily fix that tabs by welding a removable set of brackets on there. Just gotta find some, lol. Thanks for the link, will check out right now. If I have questions I will ask, thanks. Still learning more about these old gals. Love the fact there is such a community supporting them. Great website!
