  1. Down sleeping bag, stove, EPIRB. Or have you got those covered already? And load up on the little single-AAA LED flashlights from WallyWorld. They're small enough to hold in your mouth when your hands are the only two you've got.
  2. I am installing the Subaru fog lamp kit (H4510AC500), but have run into a load of nonsense on the last page of the instructions: "Pass long cord assy through the hole (Radiator panel) and route it along the front end." At what level? The diagram shows the cable lying on top of the bumper beam, but, "Tie wrap cord to slots on underside of bumper skin near each end of underbumper air intake (2 places)." So now I'm under the bumper? And there aren't any slots in the bumper skin, except the ones that used to hold the "trim covers" I took out in step 2. "Tuck cord under bumper skin at bottom of air intake." Which air intake? I can tuck the cable in at the bottom of either the underbumper or overbumper intake. This doesn't resolve the question. Does anybody have any recommendations where to run this furshlugginer cable, other than up the butt of whoever wrote these instructions? C
  3. After attempting to aim my headlamps on my '98 L wagon last week, I found that the left mechanism had failed, which was why my bright spot was only 40ft. in front of the car. I took the whole damn thing apart and saw that the plastic snap-in device which held the pivot ball had broken, releasing the ball. I was able to replace the device with one from one of the adjusting screws; the three attachment points all use the same device. I carved a replacement for the screw's device out of Delrin. This worked okay because the screw is always in compression; I couldn't duplicate the little snap-in tabs. Has anyone else had these plastic snap-in things break? Is there a source for new ones? I also had to take the adjustment screws out and brush the rust off them. Only one of the four turned at all using the plastic knob on the back. Two of the knobs twisted off before the screws moved, and one knob just fell off. Any discussion is welcome. Why did Subaru use unplated steel for the screws, thus insuring that the headlamps couldn't be aimed after a few years? Is the failure of the mechanism a safety issue? What have other people done, besides buy entire new headlamp assemblies?
  4. My wife managed to pop off the driver's side turn signal. I popped off the passenger side one some years ago. These are attached by one arm which heads up and back and gets screwed to the chassis from above. There are also a plug which snaps rearward into a socket. There is one more attachment point, a small tab which seems to have somehow articulated with a rectangular slot in a plastic bracket just to the side of the headlight housing. The relevant bits of these tabs broke off and were lost in both accidents, so I have no reference left. Can anyone provide a picture or description of the tab and how it mates with the socket?
