  1. The 1983 owner's manual has an item called Vehicle Posture Adjustment to adjust the front and the rear ground clearances (suspension ride heights). Apparently the adjustment requires a special wrench. The adjustment is too much to completely describe here. I can photocopy the pages if you want them. Here is a link to a very good description of the hill holder http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?p=26033#post26033 The 1983 owner's manual specifies 80W, 85W and 90 weight API classification GL-5 gear lube depending on temperature. It indicates a capacity of 3.2 US quarts for the 4WD manual transmission. Hopefully someone else here can give you more information. Dave Wood
  2. Humble Nuto 53, I very much want to pass my wagon on to a good home. I would be very pleased if the car or its parts were of use to a Subaru enthusiast. If this means you, I'd like to talk further. For me, I just can't justify spending the money required to keep my GL on the road. Dave Wood p.s. where is squaresville baby?
  3. Yes, SuBrat84, I would be very happy for you to use my wagon's parts in your Brat. I'm willing to drive the GL to Wisconsin, but if I were going to Arizona, I'd drive my WRX. The WRX parts are not currently available. Thank you for your interest. Dave Wood
  4. Thank you very much for the information, MorganM. Unfortunately, the link did not work, but I think I found Subaru Heaven, to wit: Cindy's Classic Auto Parts 300 US Highway 12 And 18 Cambridge, WI 53523 (608) 423-4307 I have read that the proprietor can be rather unpleasant, but sometimes I have a bad day, too. Anyway, I'm struggling with parting with my wagon because I like it a lot. But at 208,000 miles, it has developed some transmission, front axle, and other problems and I can't see spending the money to get it fixed. The engine (except alternator) is good and the center lamp works. I would be very happy if my wagon could be a donor car to other enthusiasts. Thanks again! Dave Wood
  5. It is time for me to say goodbye to a 1982 Subaru GL 4WD station wagon. I have heard that there are salvage yards in Wisconsin that specialize in Subarus. I have searched USMB, but can't find any threads on the subject. Any help you can give me locating them would be greatly appreciated. I am located in northeastern Illinois. Thank you. Dave Wood
  6. Thank you, folks, for the advice. I had the gear oil changed, but the whining continues. I've driven another 3000 miles, though, with no failure of the transmission. I think I'll carry on like cole098 suggested. Thanks again! Dave Wood
  7. The four speed, dual range transmission in my 1982 GL 4wd station wagon has started to make a whining sound while under way. At 201,000 miles the tranny is showing its age. I had the car to the dealer today and he estimates 10 to 12 hours to repair plus, of course, parts. Probably about $2000 or $2500 to rebuild the transmission and front differential. Am I nuts for even thinking about spending that kind of money? I am nuts because in the last 20 months I have spent about $6000 on the car (front half shafts, carburetor, alternator, water pump, oil pump, transmission mounts, etc). Should I quit now and give it up? Drive it until the transmission totally fails? Part it out? I really like the car and it otherwise runs well, but it's getting way rusty and expensive to fix. Well, thanks for reading this and thanks in advance for any advice. By the way, I am located in north-eastern Illinois. Dave Wood
  8. I have been reading with great interest the recent discussions of the GL10 and Gen1 and Gen2 Subarus. The discussions lead me to a question: is the Loyale considered Gen3? The Loyale seems much larger than my 1982 GL, which I think is a Gen2. I would like to thank all of you for your insight about these vehicles. It has helped me a lot in making decisions about parts and repairs for my twenty-one year old station wagon! P.S. would my WRX be considered Gen X? Gen Y? Oh well... Thanks again! Dave Wood
  9. Todd, Your wagon and coupe are beautiful! Dave Wood
  10. Does anyone know where to buy an O2 sensor for a 1982 EA81? My Subaru dealer and NAPA store can't locate one. It seems that 1983 is the last year listed in the catalogs. Thanks. Dave Wood
