Radio Flyer

Puking oil into air filter housing. Billowing smoke from exhaust. Local Subaru mechanic says that compression is bad on 3 of 4 cylinders due to cylinder wall and valve wear/damage. Toast.

So my 85 GL Wagon's carbureted motor just kicked the bucket. Any ideas where to find a replacement? If I can't find a replacement soon, I will likely offer up her body as an organ donor. I'm in Yakima, Washington.

I have an 85' GL non-turbo wagon with 140,000 miles (stock carbureted). It runs great, but has had an issue with oil getting into the air filter housing (especially going around corners). The driver-side PVC hose coming off the valve cover is going to the t-fitting which connects to the PCV hose/valve. There doesn't appear to be much, if any suction to the driver-side hose unless the other side of the t-fitting is plugged off. Is this normal? The other side of the t-fitting has a smaller hose, which goes to the air filter housing and looks to be designed to suck fresh air from the housing. Perhaps the suction increases at higher rpms with the small side of the t-fitting uncapped. Is this normal? I noticed the other day, while inspecting the passenger side hose that this pictured green plug was inside of the hose and popped out when I removed the hose from the air filter housing. The plug is soft rubber and is about the same diameter as the inside of the hose. I also found, inside the hose, a couple of pieces of black electrical tape that I'm guessing the PO wrapped around the plug. I thought that the PO had put the plug in the hose for some monkey reason, so I removed it and drive around with no ill effect until I took a long high-speed left turn which resulted in a quart of oil in my air-filter housing. Wtf? Is this plug stock? If so, where is it supposed to go? With the motor running, pressure can be felt coming from the passenger side hose/valve cover, but not the driver side. Is this normal? With the PCV valve sucking (small end of t-fitting plugged), no air is being pulled through the passenger side hose, but rather a decrease in pressure blowing out of the passenger side. Is this normal. I'm at my wit's end with this issue. Anyone know of a good old-school Suby mechanic in or near Yakima? The guys at my local dealer did not impress me as knowing anything about the EA82s. Help

Disregard. I took a long-hard corner at speed yesterday and dumped about a quart of oil into the air box and smoked up the highway. and flooded the air box with oil. WTF? Now I have no idea which way is up. On the driver side valve cover, should the vent tube/line be going to the t-fitting leading to the PVC or to the hardline running behind the air filter housing that looks to eventualy vent into the air box by the carb? This is unnerving. :banghead: :banghead: Damn I hate the thought of a permanent oil catch can, but it is looking that way.

Cool beans. I may just plug it up as I doubt that much water could find it's way in the box, but the oil dripping down the front after hard/long right-hand cornering causes a pain/mess.

There is a hole in the front-bottom of the air cleaner housing of my 85 GL. I'm guessing that it is a drain hole for moisture. There is a weird blue object placed in the hole (I'm guessing by the PO). Does anyone have a plug, of some sort blocking this hole?

Problem solved. Turns out I had two hoses mixed up that lead to the air filter housing...I must have switched them while changing the valve cover gaskets...dumb dumb dumb

I keep it simple/stock.

PCV system is stock. You think I should remove hoses and run some cleaner though them eh? I'll check the oil filter, though it sounds like a long shot...my son did change the oil/filter last time...hmm.

Humm... I cleaned those valve covers, in and out, a few months back when I replaced the valve cover gaskets. As I recall, there was a bit of crud that came out of those tubes when I sprayed carb cleaner through them.

I have an 85 GL Wagon (4wd, non-turbo). It is all stock with 140k miles. It runs perfect, however somehow oil is finding it's way into the air filter housing. The filter itself is saturated on one side and oil seems to be making it's way from inside the housing to outside the houseing. I recently replaced the PCV with a new Subaru unit, do to a condition where it would smoke like mad while taking a high-g curve at speed. It still smokes during high-speed, tight curves, so I try not to go too fast around such curves. I assume these two conditions are related. She is perfect but for this annoyance. Anyone know what would be causing this?

But a genius friend of mine said I'd get an easy 50 hp and 10 more mpg! ;-). Good to know. Looks like I'll be shooting sage rats for fun this weekend instead of bastardizing the Suby. Thanks guys.

I have a 85 GL wagon and everything is stock and running fine, but I'm thinking of gutting my catalytic converter for better breathing. Anyone done this on a similar vintage Suby? Anything in the design of the cat that makes it any more difficult than other cars? After done did you notice any performance or mpg gains? Did it sound any different? Lookin for a fun project for the weekend, but don't wanna waste my time if I won't see any dividends or worse if it'll run or sound like @&$;. I know that it is illegal for on-road usage afterwards...blah blah blah. Here is a pic. Sexy huh? ;-)
