  1. EJ22 stripped down. Dizzy fitted. Hope I times it right though it's a lot easier with an offset slotted keyway than trying to align a toothed EA dizzy gear. Coolant crossover removed as the low carby manifold has an integrated crossover. Factory Subaru EJ18 carby and manifold. Will put this on to get it running before attempting the twin carb setup. This setup should be plug and play into my factory carb Omega wagon (Gertie). Carby manifold gasket sitting on the ej22 head. You can see how the contour of the port differs between the Carby head (round, matches the gasket) and the injected head (has an indent for the injector). There appears to be enough overlap that the Carby manifold should bolt on using new injected gaskets. Carby vs injected manifold gaskets
  2. Making some progress on the EJ swap. Got the EJ22 all stripped down, distributor installed and carby manifold prepped to go on. Looks like it'll bolt straight up to the injected heads which is great. Just need some 25 spline inner front axles and then it's go time!
  3. Here's one from the weekend at FlatNats My 84 JDM GT Turbo sedan, partially restored Brumby, Jon's tidy 86 Vortex Turbo, and an original hardtop coupe
  4. Unfortunately not many MPFI in NZ, they were basically all either turbo or carby
  5. Great day out at Flatnats 2022! Some very fast subies there and a few other old school subies. Even took her for 5 laps at Ruapuna Raceway! And a shot of the old head gasket. Definitely blown.
  6. Have now got all the parts needed to put this together except for some EA82 turbo front axles (the legacy gearbox I've got is 25 spline unfortunately). However I will soon be picking up a wrecked Leone rally car (parts car for the turbo sedan) so I'll be able to source the axles from that. Nearly at the point of building it!
  7. So, today I got her back from Crowesport (my local Subaru expert). The head gasket was the culprit in the end. All back together and running smoothly! Off to Flat Nats tomorrow.
  8. Necropost to the max, but am about to do this same swap in my 89 Omega wagon (EJ22 with factory EJ18 dizzy and carb in front of an EJ bellhousing PT4WD DR box) and I was wondering if anyone actually knew what carburetor Subaru used on the EJ18? It appears to be quite different from the earlier EA82 Hitachis I have and I was wondering what aftermarket options existed. I'm keen to put a Weber 38/38 on it. Long shot I know...
  9. Agree EFI would be nice but this obviates the need for custom wiring, fuel lines, high pressure pump etc and keeps it fairly reversible. I've got the complete wiring loom and ECU for an EJ22 sitting with my other EJ22 for the green sedan so if I can't find another distributor when it comes time to build that motor, then I will probably convert this one to EFI. Yes I believe this part time EJ box has the same transfer section on the back as the ea box so hopefully the tailshaft fits but I did keep the entire legacy drivetrain, axles, rear diff etc just in case. Also kept the front hubs in case I end up 5 stud swapping my silver sedan at some point. Too many projects haha and that's not even mentioning my Nissan 4wd.
  10. Also, if anyone wants a dual range shifter setup and interior surround to suit a gen 1 legacy I have this available and can ship internationally at your expense. Yours for $50 and shipping.
  11. Well, having now blown my second EA82 (another head gasket) it's EJ time. I found and have wrecked a very rare early EJ18 Legacy (don't worry, it had already been cut down as a river basher), with a carburetor and distributor, and a part time 4wd dual range manual box. I also have an EJ22 sitting here. Plan is, to bolt the dizzy and carb onto the EJ22 and drop that into the Omega in front of the matching PT4WD EJ box. In theory, this engine and gearbox should drop straight into the Omega and run without needing any custom wiring, mounts, driveshafts, shifters or anything. Only thing I'm not sure will fit is the pitch stopper. Then comes a lift (when subarino finally release theirs), a torqlocker and some 185r14 muddies on Peugeot steelies (already have the wheels and tyres). Should be fun!
  12. Yes was having a look on AliExpress of all places and can get a new set of 45 mm downdraft Webers for $800! Not sure on quality though
  13. Yeah I just use a steering wheel lock, bit tricky to install an immobilizer on a Carby motor haha
  14. Installed remote central locking today. Surprisingly easy to do - mine already had central locking, so all I needed to do was to install an actuator on the driver's door, and then mount the unit in the cabin and run some wiring. Hardest bit was mounting the actuator but I found a spot. Works perfectly - the new actuator flips the locking mechanism on the driver's door, triggering the original central locking mechanism. Installed it this way to keep it clean, as I haven't cut or modified any of the original wiring and can pull out the remote locking if I need to in the future and still have the original central locking functioning. I ran the constant 12 V feed to the remote unit from the back of the stereo. Pic of actuator mounting
  15. Cheers Bennie, yes I've got a lead on an early carbureted EJ18 Legacy with the part time 4wd box too, so I'll grab that and use the Carby and dizzy on this one, and the dual range box behind my other EJ22 in the blue one (to keep it all EJ clutch setup). Build parts are slowly being worked out!

  17. Can be bought from Airplex in New Zealand. Yes, they are wrap around. Agree last pic looks like a later model US spec.
  18. Have been a little busy lately with work and tramping, haven't got around to fitting the twin carbs yet unfortunately (not as easy as I thought as it will require brazing a small pipe onto the heater crossover to feed the coolant to the carb bases, also have to build a choke mechanism as these didn't come with one unfortunately as they were in a jet boat and just had some wire hooked onto them). I may end up actually using these carbs on an EJ22 in my green sedan but more on that thread. I've got a second MPFI EJ22 sitting in the north island for Gertie anyhow (yes, another one) along with a set of near new Maxxis 185r14 muddies. These will be going on a set of Peugeot 14" steelies that I've picked up, need to get them sandblasted and painted. I'll almost certainly run this EJ22 in MPFI form, unless I can find an EJ18 carb and dizzy (wagon is currently carb and wiring looks scary). Also need an adapter plate, lift kit and a torqlocker, and then we're done. Currently waiting on Subarino to release their L series kit... Also broke one of my headlight covers on a recent trip away behind Hanmer into some snow. Damn gravel roads. No fear as you can actually still buy these new, and I have two spare sets of headlights anyhow. New steering wheel fitted from SAAS along with hub, feels so much better than the original plastic one that was falling to bits. And lastly a pic of what she should look like when finished
  19. Picking up a SOHC EJ22 with matching FWD 5 speed out of an early Legacy tomorrow evening. Gearbox should be compatible with stock mounts and axles if I've done my reading right. Engine should also bolt onto factory crossmember and early SOHC heads should clear the chassis rails. I will build the motor with the high compression pistons and high lift cams before putting it in so not happening any time soon. Will also have to chat with a certifying engineer to get it all signed off, may have to upgrade brakes as it's going from 1600 to 2200 cc. Not too sure if I will run it with MPFI or twin carbs yet, I'll be grabbing ECU etc in case I go EFI but I'm tempted to twin carb it using the factory mechanical secondary Hitachis posted above... However these are jetted for an 1800 EA81S so not too sure if they'll work well for the EJ22. Otherwise I'm keeping my eyes peeled for a pair of IDF Weber carbs, missed out on a set last week dammit. Here's a pic of the garage as we all love pics
  20. The tailshaft from your loyale will work with a 5 speed box but will be too short for a 4 speed. The 5 speed dual range is bolt in for a loyale, just need the shifter.
  21. At least with a Land Rover you can buy newly manufactured Galvanized chassis! And just swap over the body and running gear.
  22. Yes, have been chatting with local Subaru gurus about it and the early SOHC EJ22 will fit a late Fugly, it is reportedly tight though. Later SOHC motors and anything DOHC doesn't fit.
  23. Will be a single range 4 speed. Least desirable box of all. You want a box from an 85-89 GL wagon which will bolt straight into your loyale. The earlier 4 speed dual range from a Brat is longer and won't fit without a custom tailshaft
  24. So, I have acquired a recently rebuilt EA81S twin carb setup. I plan to fit this to my EA82. From what I have seen this should be relatively straightforward. I will need to hook up vacuum lines, throttle, fuel and return, and create a manual choke cable (generic kits can be bought). Has anyone on here done this swap before and have any other hints for me? I'm quite familiar with my vehicle, having already swapped the EA82, removed the intake manifold before, and also rebuilt the single Hitachi carburetor once. My main concern is that the throttle cable won't be long enough.
