  1. Wow,thanks for all those helpful hints. I just finished the job in just over two hours, and she cruises down the road beautifully! It was nice Not removing the axles from the hubs, and the splines were still in great condition. Overall, it was a piece of cake job and the 4:11 differential was indeed correct. This forum Rocks!!! Thank you again! -Subidoo
  2. That's good info. However, since I have a 4:11 differential, (with the axles), replacement coming in today out of the same year and model, I wouldn't think to bother with the 'bad' one, except just removing it. What really concerns me is if the one being installed today is a match to the rest of the drive train/transmission/final drive, and 'HOW' do I check that? Does the tranny's I.D. tag indicate what Ratio it is putting out to the rear end? The tag on the bellhousing in front of the starter says; TZ102ZA4B, F. I believe this means it has a 4:11 Ratio to the rear end ??? Jeez, I hope so! Also, does anyone have the DIY on removing the rear differential and rear CV axles? Thank You ! -Subidoo
  3. Hello ALL! I just got a 1996 Impreza/Outback, AWD Automatic. The rear differential is making a terrible clunking noise and on inspection, the case itself is cracked. The noise is for sure coming from inside the differential, which sounds like stuff is broken within. My concern is a couple things. 1) The previous owner had replaced this differential with a used one just 4 months ago 2) What leaked out looks like Tranny fluid, not Gear oil. 3)The hood sticker says that the engine is a 1.8L, but my research says that 1996 Automatic AWD's didn't come with 1.8's, and only 2.2's and 2.5's. (Hood may have been replaced? Also, He may have gotten the wrong ratio differential, like for a 1.8L?). My motor stamp says EJ22, which is a 2.2L, right? 4) I found another differential with axles complete for $200.00, out of another 96 Impreza Automatic, and will arrive today, but I have no idea on how to do the job, nor can I find a post on the procedure. (Although I am mechanically inclined enough to 'figure it out', eventually, lol). 5) My research says that the differential Gear Ratio should be a 4.11, correct? How can I determine if this matches the transmission, etc? 5) I still need to find what caused the Original problem, (like tire size mismatches, maybe a binding wheel hub, etc All that said, any help on the above would be Mucho Appreciated ! ! ! -Subidoo
  4. I actually have a spare ecu that I can try. As for the wiring, no I haven't checked anything more than connections and visual damage, etc. Thank you for your ideas!
  5. Hello. I have 1992 legacy awd with an odd cooling fan issue. Here's the history When I got the car, the Passenger side fan had been hot wired to an ignition 'hot' in the fuse box. I got rid of that. Both cooling fans WILL come on with the a/c button. Fans do NOT come on when Coolant Temperature Sensor is unplugged. Neither come on with both black and green test connectors under dash, connected, as I read, should. Car WILL overheat if I don't turn on the a/c to get the fans running. I had a spare Temp Sensor, but this made no fix. I have checked all fuses and replaced the relays for the fans, both in the engine compartment fuse box and the main fan relay under the dash. I am stumped !!! Probably something simple being overlooked ???
  6. Crap! I am studying up on swapping transmissions between my 2 subis, (2 removals, 2 replacements, a 1-car small bay to work in, ugh!), and my gut is telling me it is something simple, like a bad solenoid or something. I am tempted to drop the pans on both and take the solenoids from the good tranny and try them in the bad one - much easier than two tranny jobs! Anyone hear of a bad solenoid that can keep these trannys from shifting into 3rd or 4th? If so, which ones and location? I soooo hope the problem is something simple !!!
  7. Thank You. As I had mentioned earlier I do have a 2nd 92 Legacy with a good transmission to swap with, but I really didn't want to do the work! (lol, the old back is not too happy these days). Also, I did have a code 33 once, (speed sensor), then I cleared it and it has not returned, yet. Wondering if this can cause the 'no 3rd or 4th' problem, or did the 'problem' cause the code? Lastly, if there is an awd automatic Legacy 'EZ Tranny Swap Guide for Dummies', it would be cool to breeze through it! Thanks Again !!!
  8. Thank you for the last few recent posts. (I was gone for a few days). I will attempt another test run tomorrow for several miles, perhaps 10 or so in 50 degree weather should be enough. As for codes or blinking power light, I have none. I did call a local transmission shop that specializes in Subarus. Basically, they told me there is nothing I can do and needs a rebuild, $1,600.00. Ugh!
  9. Update; I cannot find Any vacuum lines operating any Modulator on this transmission! Sooo, I will assume this is a different tranny than in a '93 Loyale and shifting is electrically operated. Help, Anyone ?
  10. Hello All ! I just bought a 92 Legacy wagon awd automatic with 163k miles. Shifts from 1st to 2nd just fine, but NO noticeable attempt to up shift to 3rd or 4th. Tried manual shifting with no difference. Fluid level, (car/trans warm, level, running, in park), is correct and "new" looking, (suspiciously, although the seller said the tranny shifted perfect when parked 8 months ago). Also, I have 4 codes; 22, 51, 52 and a "33", being the code I would think to be concerned with. After reading through the threads, the only identical problem I found, on a '93 Loyale ( http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/121174-93-loyale-automatic-transmission-3at-wont-shift/?hl=%2Bshifting+%2Bproblem ), had a SOLUTION related to a bad Modulator and vacuum line issues, which I will check shortly here. (If it matters, I did take it up to 6k rpm with no change). Are there any other known problems that can cause only 3rd and 4th to be 'gone' ? Also, a simple code clearing, (I forgot how, lol), procedure would be great! (black and green connectors were found still 'connected' under the dash? hmmm?) Thanks a bunch, G P.S. I have another perfect running 92 awd to use for test part swapping if needed.
  11. Update. Found the broken hot lead in the door jam. Primary ground almost dead too, so will repair as well. Just got the wiring diagram, finally. Will undo the tweeker job. Got power to the driver door now. Wiring according to diagram, fingers crossed. Still would like to know fuse and relay location. Hoping you are on your way to a Rockin weekend ! Again, THANK YOU !!!
  12. Just got back to the RX after slammed with other work. Tore out the entire passenger side; carpet, kick panels, everything. NO single Red wire splitting into two red wires. Bummer. Also, still dont know where Fuse or Relay is located. Good news, the head job went smooth, but a long job, one that I don't wanna do ever again. Omg, the 20 or so Subi head jobs/rebuilds before seemed so simple compared to this one! lol. Soooo, still in search of Power to the Driver door. Tempted to just create my own, fused hot lead, and just be done with it. Frick'in frustrating why they made it so complicated, and hard to find info. Again, any help is very much appreciated. Peace and Abundance...
