  1. Repair shop says front differential is junk. They recomend complete rebuild for it and transmission. $2200
  2. Drained the front differential, found metal shavings on magnet, so a reputable transmission shop should be able to rebuild the front differential?
  3. Bought my first Subaru about a year ago for my Grand daughter to use while in college at Morgantown West Virginia. Have come to conclude it is the perfect students vehicle. Great traction for the snow covered winter hills about Morgantown. Economical to operate. Great visibility. Reputation for durability, should outlast four or five years of college. Car has already been hauled into lockup twice for loitering in places it was not welcome. Hopefully teenager who heralds from a county which has no trafic lights, now understands that concept. Overall, we both really like the Forester, and I see a second one in the future.
  4. Should have mentioned this with initial post. The noise is only present when the vehicle is under load and only in second or higher gear. It is an automatic.
  5. I am a first time Subaru owner in need of a good Subaru mechanic around Bridgeport/Clarksburg West Virginia. I have a 2003 Forester X (automatic) making a loud winding noise which seems to come from the transmission. No leaks, fluid levels are fine. CV Joints are good. 82,000 miles. Shifts smooth. winding only when under load and in 2nd or higher gear. Any ideas? Any recomendations on a good mechanic?
  6. It's an automatic, I am going to make a new post to seek a mechanic familiar with Subaru's.
  7. I have never owned a Subaru before and bought one for my Grand daughter to use. 2003 Subaru Forester X w/ 82,000 miles recently started making a winding noise in the transmission. Checked all fluid levels, checked cv joints, checked transmission mount and leakage. All Good. Took to a repair shop, they think noise is in transmission but have no idea what it is. they suggest run it until it breaks. any ideas of what problem may be and potential fix?
