1. Anyone have a part number for the steering rack bushings? Mine are toastada
2. I wish all these danged dual ranges were closer. They are pretty hard to come by out this way. Someone will surely scoop this up. Good luck
3. Hey man - any pics? I am in need of doing the same after lifting my wagon - pics would be MUCH appreciated. thanks!
4. D/R tranny and interior trim pieces? Good to see there are some floating around this part of the country.
5. Alright - i finally got my lift (Thanks Gloyale). I got a good chance to work on it this weekend and have everything installed but the strut toppers. I didn't have to lengthen my pitch rod - i plan to lengthen my steering coupler tonight and deal with shift linkage when i get the car back on all 4 tires. One thing that i am having some issues with is the intake hose from air box to intake - how did you guys lengthen this? I could get a generic 3" hose and reducer to make it work, but what about the PCV and vacuum line? And also, that strange cylindrical cavity that is sticking out of the side of the hose? Anybody know what purpose this serves? Is there a longer option available? The car is coming together and looks rather amusing rolling on the stock wheels and tires. Tires will be next! Come on paycheck...
6. I did a bit of searching and couldn't find much about this topic - so i shall ask. I have an 88 GL Turbo and eventually want to re-route the exhaust as i am lifting the car, and i want to upgrade the exhaust. When i do this, i want to put a high flow cat and possibly a magna flow muffler. I also plan to bump up to 2.25" or 2.5" pipe. Has anyone out there upgraded the exhaust on an EA82T? What did you use? Pipe diameter?? - this is my main concern as i know a high flow cat is a high flow cat, and mufflers are pretty much a preference for sound etc. Any suggestions would be stellar. My goal is to boost performance a bit and to make that little EA82T boxer sound good. Cheers Nate
7. Your stuff look great man - i will patiently wait for an EA82T header. Keep up the good work!
8. I totally dig this man! The panel look will be sick when it is done. I'm glad to see your vision coming to life. I'm curious to see what comes of this beast.
9. Good chance it is called the "engine stabilizer bushing" The Subaru dealer i get parts from has it as well and has no problem finding parts for my 88 GL. OP - you should contact another dealer, surely there is one around that can get you parts for your Brat
10. Great info once again Miles. It is greatly appreciated. I am going to inquire about the diff but may take you up on the offer. Running a 3.9 final gear would be ideal. Any way to tell which is which by looking at a picture? Thanks again man
11. I have recently acquired an '88 GL, my first Subaru, and am looking for a D/R transmission. My understanding is that there were a few models offered. The most highly desired is the trans with a separate lever to shift 4H and 4L. If you are looking at the tranny, is there an obvious way to tell between the two? Anything that a vin number would tell you? I have been using sites such as partshotline.com and car-part.com as there are practically no Subarus, let alone of that era, in the junkyards around here. Most places i have called have the parts out of the car, and arent able to tell me which style of tranny they have. They just have them listed as 5sp, dual range, non-turbo/turbo. I found a non-turbo tranny that came out of a low mile car ~70k for relatively cheap ($250 shipped) but they have no idea which style it is. Also - my car is a turbo EA82 - what are the differences between the turbo and non-turbo trans? The turbo trans are full time 4wd? Please excuse my ignorance - i am a new, excited member of the Subaru world. Thanks in advance for your help guys. I have a 3" lift on the way from Highguyslifts and got a set of 6 lug wheels that i am cleaning up. I am planning to redrill my hubs when i get the lift in order to run the toyota wheels. I am super pumped about this car. The D/R tranny will be my last mod for a while as i am quickly running out of money!
12. Highguyslift.com - just ordered a lift from these guys myself. They offer a 3" and a 4" that are "full drop" thus keeping all geometry at stock angles. To my knowledge, SJR doesn't offer such a kit. All of his kits stress axles 1" over stock geometry. I went with the 3" full drop as my 88 GL spends 90% on the pavement. Gloyale is the guy to contact if you are interested in the highguyslift - from my experience, it may take him a bit of time to get back to you - but he will and can answer any questions you have about their stuff. Only down fall is that they are made to order, as are SJR kits. Highguys are currently waiting on steel to produce my strut toppers I will follow up with quality of construction etc when it arrives...
13. Car looks great man. I love your attention to detail. I would love to have a Legacy around this year in this good of shape. Well done my friend!
14. For those of you who have installed a lift and had to replace coolant/rad hoses, shift linkage, etc - any pointers? What did you do for rad hoses? Is there one out there that works? ANY pointers are greatly appreciated. Thanks!
15. Decided to go with a 3" full drop kit from Highguyslift. I will keep all stock geometry and should be able to stuff a 27" without cutting or using a BFH. Stoked to see that package show up on my front porch. I picked up a set of Toyota 15x7 alloys this weekend off of a 91 4Runner - my GLs maiden voyage on the fresh heads, HGS, seals etc. A 200 mile round trip to Orleans, IN and she ran great. No issues at all. My plan is to wrap them in Grabber A/T2s unless i find another tire that i like better between now and then. The car is coming together, and after waiting what seemed like forever for parts, i couldn't be happier!
16. I wouldnt mess with converting to MPFI. It's a bit of a pain to do, and the turbo motor will require more attention. Rock it as is. A head gasket job is super easy on these cars. You can do it in a weekend. Finding parts is harder than the actual work. Congrats on the 88 man - I just recently purchased an 88 GL turbo and did head gaskets, heads, water pump, seals, timing belts, etc. Worth doing while you've got the motor out. Do your homework on USMB - there is more than you will ever need to know on here. Good luck!
17. From what i have heard and read, as long as you take care of the cooling system and dont let the motor overheat they are just fine. Just a bit less "set it and forget it". I bought one about a month ago with blown head gaskets at 110k from a neglected cooling system. got the motor out and heads off and they were infact fatally cracked. Replaced with remanned heads and it runs like a champ. I also replaced the radiator and will be certain to drain and flush on a regular basis - yearly. The turbo makes it fun to drive, just enough of a boost to put a smile on your face. I wouldn't let the turbo motor keep you from buying it if you are getting a good deal. And when it goes, you can always swap in an EJ and call it a day. My .02
18. Thanks - that is definitely good to know man! Great build, pretty much everything i want to do with mine! Thanks for the heads up on the general grabbers - i will keep that in mind when i start shopping. I still need to track down a set of wheels. I am afraid to pull the trigger on the Toyota wheels - i don't want to get them on there and have tons of rubbing due to backspacing - something that surely could have been avoided if i went with a different wheel. Junkyard is under a foot of snow right now... not my favorite thing to do in the snow, that's for sure. I think we have a few isuzus and mazdas right now. I may be able to find something that would work. I saw in your build that you picked up a set of toyota 6 lugs - how did those work for you?
19. Thanks for the input - i might head to the JY this weekend to try to track down some 14's. I want to run an old set of 4Runner wheels, but they have a 4.5" backspacing. Is this doable? I like the look so these cars with 14" wheels - i think they look more proportional than 15" wheels, but i do love the look of the 80's 4Runner alloys... The toyota wheels are 2.5 hours away though.. good deal, but would rather not drive that far, and they not work.
20. I've got an 88 GL wagon - just got my bonus check from work and i am going straight for a lift and tires! I am having some issues deciding what lift to go with. Honestly, this car will spend most time on the road, and i do a fair bit of driving so i would like for the car to still drive and handle well on the road - but that being said, i will def get her dirty from time to time, and like to get off the beaten path, as we all do. I am planning to run some Grabber AT2's - 225/70-15 or something close to 27" diameter. I would rather not use a BFH is i can avoid it. Anyone out there who has driven both lift sizes - do they handle much different? Much of difference in stress on parts with the 2" vs 4"? I know each lift stresses the axle 1" above stock. How is the install on both? Is the 4" work the additional $175? Any input will help - i have scoured the forums, and although the info is out there, it is all spread out, and some info isnt there. Thanks in advance!
21. Update - I ended up ordering reman'd heads from a place out of St. Louis called RAMS Cylinder heads. They had them sitting on the shelf and ready to roll with a 3 year, unlimited mile warranty. Hard to pass up, especially when they were going to ship next day (as i am in a hurry to get my car back together) At this point, i had EVERYTHING i needed to get the car back together. All seals, waterpump, gaskets, thermo, dual core radiator, EGR block plate created, timing belts, tensioners, etc etc. Well the heads finally showed this past friday - turns out they didn't ship the next day as the passenger side head needed some work. They also had an issue with finding an threaded EGR head... I wish they would have called bc i just plugged it anyway. The driver side head looked great - looked damn near new and installed without an issue. I was stoked. The pass side looked like crap. Sloppy welds, the turbo oil return had been hacked off and something welded on in it's place and was the wrong size. The PCV port was plugged. It hadnt been surfaced where the intake meets the head... It was a mess - and i was pissed. So i marked up the head with a sharpie, put all three heads in a box (my two cores, and the "reman'd")and shipped them back today. Called and got no answer. So i sent a nicely worded email explaining all the issues with pictures etc. I called back again about an hour later and spoke with a cat named Ivan, who was great to deal with while inquiring and ordering. He apologized many times and seemed surprised that the head was in as bad of shape is it is. I begged that they fixed my head and ship it out this week (even with xmas) but he didnt think this would be possible as it would need to spend a day in the oven. Anyhow. I will wait another week or more to get this car together. it has just been one thing after another, and with no car, I'm kinda getting burnt out. I just want to get the thing together and running!! I also stopped by the BMV saturday to register the car, but totally forgot that a physical VIN check is necessary for vehicle with out of state titles. So i have to have a member of the 5-0 come take a look at it before i return to the BMV. Just another hassle. I can't tell you how excited i am to get this thing running. One nice thing about the head issue is that Subaru ordered the wrong parts, but in the meantime, i got the correct ones! It's the little things! Anyhow - i hope to have the car back together and running as soon as i get the head. I have done EVERYTHING that i can do without the other head. Anyone know if you absolutely MUST use anaerobic sealant between the head and cam towers? I totally forgot and used red gasket maker instead. I dont mind pulling it off to re-do it, just figured i'd ask. I read somewhere that the silicone stuff will fail... Thanks for reading! TLDR: It is taking forever to get my car back together. But i will have it together soon.
22. I got a link up to my pictures that is now working! Take a look and let me know what you think - thanks! http://s790.photobucket.com/user/nkmiles27/library/
23.
Update - I ended up getting the car for $700. Picked it up last Sunday, got her home and pulled the motor. Car seemed great, REALLY well taken care of, especially living it's entirely life in the salt belt states. Motor out, pulled the head. The headgaskets blew due to a broken head bolt. I have those on order right now. I was swapping the valve stem seals when I noticed that the "acceptable" crack between the intake and exhaust ports is not acceptable. The crack runs up the cooling jacket. It can be seen both in the intake and exhaust ports. I assume these are toast and I am in the market for a new to me set of heads. Can anyone confirm this? Maybe NorthWet - you mentioned this before I looked at the car. Anyhow. Not totally discouraged, but this is def a let down. Was hoping to have the car running this week. Anyone got a set of heads they are willing to let go of? PM me if you do! For some reason, it is not letting me upload pictures. I have tried from my home computer and work now. Not sure what the deal is. Any tips are greatly appreciated. I am getting an error saying "Error: File Upload skipped" Pretty sure they cooling jackets are cracked though. Bummer Edit** I think this might work. This link should take you to my photobucket with the images. Let me know if you still can't see them!

http://s790.photobucket.com/user/nkmiles27/library/
