  1. I just returned to OK from a trip to CA in my 89 GL sedan (2WD 3spd auto) and the odometer now reads 303,405 mi. It's my daily commuter car (75 mi/day) and cruises all day at 4,000 rpm without a hitch. The EA82 may not be the quickest thing on the road, but I can easily cruise at the posted speed limits.
  2. I have an 89 GL sedan with 3 spd automatic and 303,000+ mi on the odometer. Last week I drove to CA from OK and back on I-40 and averaged 31 to 32 mpg doing 65 to 70 mi/hr. The car doesn't have air so the windows are open. My former car, an 87 GL wagon 4WD with 5spd manual got 35 mpg on similar trips cruising 65 to 70 mi/hr.
  3. I have an 89 GL sedan 3 spd AT with 294,000 mi. on the engine that was doing the same thing (getting a mild pinging) at partial throttle. I connected the green connectors under the hood and checked my ignition timing. The ignition timing was right at 20 deg. BTC which was right on spec. I tried a tank of premium gas and the pinging did go away so I'm of the opinion that carbon buildup in the combustion chambers has raised the effective compression. I suppose the injector is running rich enough to cool the incoming mixture at full throttle to avoid the ping but not at partial throttle. My fix was to retard the ignition timing by 2 deg. to 18 deg. BTC and I'm now able to use regular gas again with out noticable pinging at partial throttle. My mileage is still in the 30 mi./gal range. And by the way, if the engine is running a bit hotter than normal, that could also contribute to engine ping. The EA82 may not be a high performance engine, but it's the most durable small engine I have ever experienced.
  4. I've had a '87 GL 4WD wagon 5spd (Bought it new) that gave me 35-38 mpg highway once it was well broken in. My current '89 GL 2WD sedan with a 3 spd AT (Bought used for $100 at 245,000 mi. with a clogged radiator and bad alternator.) only gives me 28-29 on the highway. The main difference I notice between the two is the 5 spd rarely exceeded 3500 rpm at highway speeds while the 3 spd AT is at 4000 rpm. The '89 had quite an oil leak until I changed the cam cover gaskets. The old ones were hard as a rock!!! Still not bad for 267,000 mi. on the original engine.
  5. 200,000 mi on a Subaru seems to be the norm around our house. My '87 GL 5 speed 4wd wagon went 238.000 mi. before New England winters took it's toll on the frame. We lived in the snow belt of north central Massachusetts which meant living on salted roads from Nov. to May. I bought an '89 GL 3 spd auto sedan "parts" car from one of my students for $100 and when the rear suspension of the wagon broke from corrosion, I swapped out the radiator and alternator which was all the '89 GL needed to be roadworthy. Now I commute in the '89 and it has 262,000 mi. on the clock. My only concern is it has no overdrive and the engine turns over much faster (4,000 rpm ) at 70 mi/hr than my 5 spd '87 wagon which I never ran over 3500 rpm.
