  1. I have a 92 legacy (2.2 natural asperation) on which we just changed the timing belt and water pump. Now it runs fine for a while, then starts missing, then is runs fine again. However, when it runs rough it really runs rough. I thought is was fuel, but we have good pressure and I changed out the fuel filter just to be sure. Then I was pointed at the Coolant Temperature Sensor and since it is cheap, I changed it out. We got a IAC from a junk yard, cleaned it, tested it then installed it. All that and is still does it. Anyone have any ideas?
  2. On a further note. One of the teeth on the Crank shaft shaft sprocket (the middle one) looks to be broken off. will this cause any issues or might this be related to this issue?
  3. Well here is an interesting thing about the cam sprockets on this engine, if you look carefully then you will see that the have a L or R on them. And yes they were back word. So we swapped the sprockets. Got all of the line-up points lined up with the new belt on with tensioners all set (but tensionor piston still locked with a hold back pin). We tried the start test again and it STILL IS NOT STARTING
  4. I will check out the TC seal. Thanks! I get that I will have to pull it all again, but I am getting really good at that. The marks we are using are: - The #1 on the tooth at the back of the crank spindle and lining it up to the tick mark just under the tack sensor directly above it. - The paint marked tick on the front of both cam spindles to the notch in the plastic back cover on both sides.
  5. The Basics: 1993 Legacy Wagon. 2.2 engine with 109k on it. Automatic transmission. AWD. So we pulled the engine using the instructions from http://beergarage.com/ and YouTubes from the MercedesDieselGuy. The instructions we all good, but Beergarage was pulling a Stick shift and the Videos were great but glossed over a few points that I NOW know. I need advise on two different points. 1. One of the things that I missed in pulling it apart was removing the 4 bolts that hold the flywheel to the torque converter. When we pull it apart the TC was still attached to the Flywheel. Before we reassembled, I pull the TC off and then feed it back onto the transmission spindle and rotated it until is seated all the way back on the spindle. After getting it all back together and turning the engine over for the timing test, a big puddle of ATF appeared on the floor...... HELP 2. After: carefully getting the crank shaft spindle lined up on the TDC mark; AND both cam spindles lined up on the top center marks on the cover; AND getting the timing belt marks all lined up on the spindles and marks; AND all the of the engine put back together - We cranked it over and it would not start. We rechecked all the wiring plugs and hose connections and tried again. Still no luck. What am I missing????? Thanks in advance for your HELP! Patrick
  6. My 92 Legacy occasionally has a starting issue. You put the key in the ignition and turn it to start and you get a single click, but no starter. if you turn it to the start position repeatedly, quickly eventually it will start. It will go through periods of no problems then it will act-up again. From the sound that it is making I think that there is an issue with the solenoid. Either it is not getting enough Voltage to close the circuit or it just is not making contact. So two questions: 1. Since a lot of cars have both a remote switching solenoid and a solenoid on the starter, Does this have one or more solenoids? 2. Where will I find it/them? Thanks in advance for you help
  7. I am about to pull the Ej22 out of my '92 legacy wagon and give it the new timing belt, water pump and cam seals et al. I am looking for two things: 1. a good set of step-by-step instrutions for this process. 2. advice on other things to check/replace while I have it out of the car. Thanks in advance
  8. Update - It was the tires. The tires were Firestone with a tread depth of about 3/8 inch. They looked nearly new and in pretty good shape. But it turns out the tread was separating and there were belt and cording material sticking out of the inside of one of the tires. I wonder what that says about Firestone tires..
  9. I just jacked it up and checked. Both front tire turn free. There is no vertical looseness in either wheel. I am about to drive it again and will pay close attention to the symptoms.
  10. Thanks all The brakes are good and does not pull when braking. The tires LOOK good, but I am not sure about the balance, However, my experience with Wheel Balance is that wobble is only at some speeds and does not go away. I will check the bearings first and go from there.
  11. I drove the boy's "new" Legacy for the first time tonight and for all of the good about that car, There were two things I need some direction on: 1. Starting it up cold and driving the front end has a wobble at all speeds up to 45 mph (could not go faster on those roads) until it went about 5 miles and the wobble started lessening. It was gone after about 10 miles. Is this an AWD thing? I cannot believe it is supposed to act like that. 2. During the wobble and for the rest of the 30 mile drive, the car pulls to the right. More at certain speeds (37mph and 51 mph) than any others. In a non-AWD car I would go to directly to alignment, but I just do not know this system well enough. Thanks in advance for your thoughts and advice.
  12. Once again, thanks everyone for your Help. I bought this car for my boy so he could learn about working on his own car. I have worked on many makes and models of cars, but never a Subaru before. I need some pointers like: Where do I find the information on pulling this engine? what are the tricks?
  13. Thank all of you for your time and inputs.I checked it out carefully: the boots are all good, with two recently replaced. You can barely hear the engine run. Even with the body issues I bought it. I am now a Subie owner. In going through that engine compartment, I experienced a full color flash-back. That 4 cylinder opposing, horizontal bias, engine made me think I was looking at the old air cooled VW 1600cc bug engine. Ok it is water cooled, but damn! I wonder where Subaru got that engine design????
  14. Thanks Rooster, I will check all of those issues. I will also stay on the forum. I have learned that these can be valuable resourses for those of us who are mechanically inclined and willing to work on their own car. Thanks again for your time and thoughts!!
  15. I like hard working older cars, so I am looking at a 1992 Subaru Legacy AWD Wagon with 105K miles on it. Other than a little body damage on a rear corner the car looks to be in good shape. There are two mechanical issues: ignition switch (key) does not hit every time and a crank case oil leak. Can anyone who knows these cars give me some insights on this. I sounds like a good car, but I do not know if there are known issues with the year/model? The two mechanical issues sound relatively easy. Any thoughts on those? anything specific I should look for? Thanks in advance for your help!
