  1. I'm in need of a passenger door window for a 2nd Gen 1988 GL 2door hatchback. I see some for sale on Ebay for $47.00 but says they are for the 4 door wagon. Anyone have knowledge if this will be a compatible fit? I would think the front doors would be same glass size/design. No?
  2. Hello out there, I have a 2nd Gen 1988 Subaru Hatchback GL 4 speed manual dual range transmission EA81 with Weber 32/36 I'm getting terrible mpg. Runs great though. Never stalls, Putters a little only when going from 3rd to 4th going up hill but I would think this is fairly normal? I'm going to be checking through some of the common known issues but curious if anyone has had a similar model and setup as this and gotten good mpg if so, what range? I estimate I'm getting about 18 right now and not happy with this. The only reason I bought a subaru was for the combination of 4wd and good mpg, nothing more otherwise I would have stuck with my pathfinder. What are the first things that come to mind from personal experience and I will be sure to check those things first. Btw Spark Plugs recently changed, but not the wires. Airfilter (K&N) dirty, about to clean. Tons of things have been done to this car before I bought it so I wonder why this would remain an issue ort gone unoticed. I got some work to do. Much thanks and appreciation for any info!
  3. Just bought a 2nd generation 1988 Subaru GL hatchback dual transmission 4 speed manual with the EA81 engine. The person I bought it from had the receipts for some work they had done. I called the mechanic shop about a few questions I had that weren't clear on the receipt to get a better idea of what's in my car. The mechanic said he replaced both front axles with used Lobro axles when the others were going bad. He said they are the best, better than what the car originally came with, and that they stopped making Lobro axles about 10 years ago so you can't even get them anymore. Can anyone confirm this? I did a search on the forum and nothing came up. Thanks!
  4. Thanks to everyone who replied, I am going to hold off on the 5 speed conversion at the moment, Jerry, I will keep your number in case I change my mind to get more info on the kit you suggested. For now and since my cash is limited, I will focus on getting bigger tires. I already planned on getting it lifted (4 inches), so I think the bigger wheel/tire option is best right now. Thanks again for all of the help/suggestions!
  5. Just bought a 2nd Generation 1988 Subaru GL 3 door hatchback 4 speed manual transmission with dual range (4 hi, 4 lo) with an EA81 engine. I've been searching this forum, but haven't found alot of info regarding the benefits of swapping my 4 speed manual for a 5 speed? There are alot of posts about swapping an automatic for a 5 speed, but that doesn't help me. The main reason I'm interested in doing this is I do alot of freeway driving, and I go about 65-70, which puts my rpms in the 3000-3200 range. I know that's not great for the engine, and I want this engine to last. I read on one post where a person said by swapping to a 5 speed, it lowered the rpms by 500 while highway driving. Is that true? I wanted more confirmation than 1 person before considering this. Are the gear ratios the same, or will I be able to be at a lower rpm going 65-70 if I swap to a 5 speed? What does a swap involve if I'm going from the 4 to 5 speed? I read that they made them in 5 speed with the EA 81 engine those same years, mine just happened to have a 4 speed manual. Can anyone confirm it that's true, Wikipedia isn't always correct. I would think it would be easier to find a 5 speed transmission from an EA 81 than EA 82 if that's the case..... Thanks for your help and replies!
  6. Hi, just bought a Second Generation 1988 Subaru GL 3 door hatchback with the EA 81 engine, dual transmission (4 hi, 4 lo), 4 speed manual transmission. There had been alot of work done to this car about 6-8 years ago (with receipts), and it runs great. When we were changing the spark plugs though, we noticed the passenger front axle inner boot was torn, and we could see where some grease had sprayed out. The axles had been replaced in 2006 along with the wheel bearings and inner tie rods. I'm totally new to subarus and don't know anything about them yet, and just got my first repair manual in the mail (Haynes 1600 & 1800, 1980-1989 years) My question is, can I just replace the inner boot, and how do I know if the CV joint or anything else has been damaged? I just bought this car a few weeks ago, so I don't know exactly how long the boot has been torn. It's running really smooth, no noticeable vibrations, clicking sounds, etc. If that's the case, is it recommended to get an OEM boot from Subaru? I've read bad things about aftermarket boots (dorman, etc). I already found and bookmarked the axle rebuild post, I don't have a shop though, and live in an apartment complex. Plus I'm trying to get this fixed ASAP so that hopefully only the boot needs to be replaced. I don't want to give it the chance to damage anything else, if it hasn't already. Any thoughts/suggestions would be helpful, thanks!
