  1. Howdy y'all. I bought an 86 GL Wagon (carb) from a guy who hadn't run it for 3.5 years. I have replaced the fuel filter three times. I'm still getting poor fuel supply, and before replacing the pump, I thought I would clean the lines and maybe pull and clean the tank. On the first filter change, there was a pile of rust sediment in there. The fuel seems clean now. Does anyone know if there is a "pickup" with a filter sock on it inside the tank? If so, that is probably the culprit. Can that be pulled out of the tank without removing the tank? By the way, if it is unlikely that the line in the tank could be plugged, can the fuel pump be tested somehow? I also thought about reversing the fuel lines on the pump to blow out the blockage. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

  3. Sorry...it's the throttle shaft bushing that is shot. Does that require a full rebuild?
  4. I just bought an 86 GL wagon 1.8. The carb bowl is dry in the morning, though once primed, it runs decent. The rubber boot on the "choke plunger" is shot and leaking fuel. I think it also leaks from the main gasket where it bolts to the intake body. I figure I better rebuild the thing. It doesn't look like it has ever been off the vehicle in 171k. The parts store needs numbers from the carb, but I don't see any number plate. Where is it? Does anyone know what # carb this rig has on it? Thanks very much. wb
  5. Thanks Mac. I have learned (wrenching on other scoobs) that Haynes is 10x better than Chilton. If I have to break the motor open, or if I am stumped, I will check out those service manuals. Cheers. Bill
  6. I don't even have the nerve to call a dealer for something like that. More than I paid for the rig without doubt. The fan switch works, but the headlight switch is touchy. Same sort of thing...worn contacts I reckon. I've got a bad boot on the driver's cv but it is not clicking...yet. Do folks on the board ever boot and grease these things, or swap them out as a rule?
  7. Thanks Mac. I jostled it a bit and got it to work. I would like to fix it though. If I get ambitious one of these days, I might tear down the switch and try to tweak the contacts. Beyond that, I suspect it requires replacement. Smells like an expensive dealer part. wb
  8. Greetings. I just bought an 86 GL Wagon. The left signal works, as do the hazards, but the right side lamps don't come on or flash. I heard a buzzing in the steering column when I first tried the right signal, but it quit. Is this vehicle equipped with one of those aluminum "flasher cylinders"? If so, where is it. If not...what do I do. I have a Haynes coming via E-Bay, but I'd like to get it fixed soon. Thanks!
  9. Greetings All. I'm looking to buy a subaru, and I am going to compression test it. What is an acceptable range for an 86 GL no turbo with 150k. Obviously, I will be on the lookout for even compression accross all the cylinders, but I want to know how tired this thing is. 125-130 psi?? What is the factory spec. on a new motor? Thanks!
