  1. My gl decided to get a bit of a make over by catching on fire. It now rests wherever mac towing took it.
  2. Im not entirely sure. I think it overheated at first and then maybe a wire melted? I have a feeling it was due to the fuel lines though. Maybe they were old and cracked in some place.
  3. The subaru is no more. It caught on fire today. RIP Tow truck took it away to subaru heaven, ie its still in the northwest if anyone is looking for the trans.
  4. Timing is set to 20* 3 way filter sounds like a good idea. Ill have to do that one. I replaced all the gaskets. Everything seems tight. No burning coolant either. At least any that I can notice. Jets are standard. I checked everything out and it is at 2.5 turns out. Vacuum is stable, so I dont think there are any leaks. Float was set before install, choke isn't interfering.
  5. Well I do know that abs has helped a lot in the past and I have taken an airbag to the face... I cant imagine that force hitting a steering wheel instead of a pillow. Cool little tidbit about the b pillar info.
  6. Ok so update! The dieseling is more under control. The car is not too bad with the weber. Just have to be mindful of the traffic a bit more. Now that it is daily able and in good working order I need to figure out whether to keep it for my brother or go with an obs... Thinking and planning time.
  7. Yeah thats a good point. Ill see how he picks up the 5 speed. Hes not really into "cars" that much. Im more worried about something hitting him than him speeding a lot, even though it could happen, its less likely.
  8. Ok so I have had this 1987 gl wagon for not too long. Now at the time I just thought, "ok my brother needs something cheap with decent mileage that I can fix up for him." Well after some hunting around and thinking back on when I built my chevelle, I realized that when he gets the urge to do something stupid that it's better he do the stupid off-road while camping and just get stuck in mud rather than fly off the road trying to drift or drag. Subaru gl seemed perfect for his first car. But now after driving it around some and seeing some wrecked ones at the yards I wonder. There's no abs, no air bags, and the body doesn't seem all that reinforced. At the same time I don't have much of a problem with merging onto the highway with the 5 speed and low hp. Had to continue accelerating on a shoulder earlier because the cars wouldn't slow down and let me in, he thought we were going to end up on the wall/ditch. So yeah just made me a bit nervous and think twice... An auto obs should be a better step up safety wise I would assume and still give him something fun to do with it? Anyway, let me know what you guys think, he'll be driving in a few months so I still have time to get something setup for him if the obs would need a little work.
  9. Increasing the timing has helped a lot in driveability. Low end torque has increased. Dieseling has not decreased. I am surprised that these carbs can function while being so hot. If my holleys and edelbrocks ever got this hot the fuel would boil over right quick.
  10. 32/36. DGEV. 140/140. 2.5 turns out mixture screw. No air leaks. Initial timing set to 10. Car runs hotter. Dieseling for about 20 seconds. No additional power. Strong gas smell. No gas leaks. I do not know whether or not the fuel could boil over to exacerbate dieseling. Power band is smoother. Slight back fire/popping from carb. Doesn't seem like a lean condition back fire. Up hill floored in second can barely hold 30 mph. Strong exhaust pressure so cats unlikely.
  11. The Weber I put on has been a waste of time and money so far, but I hustled my wiper motor like it owed me money and it started working again
  12. Good news everyone! I gave that wiper motor a cheeky jab and it started working again
  13. So drove it around for a bit. It'll diesel for about 20 seconds when shut off. Mixture screw is 2.5 turns out. It's also stinking of gas after a few miles. There are no leaks. Timing is set to 10. There's no extra power but it is smoother. This was a supposed to be a reliable efficient daily... it is becoming the exact opposite. It's also running hotter. Was at about 1/3 of the gauge now at about half.
