  1. No worries, that's why I had the grease in there, if anything did get in the hole, it stuck to the grease, and I was able to scoop it out, first time trying that trick, but it worked really good, I highly suggest it. I never knew about this adapter, and that I could add a gauge, I think I may have to do this. although When I do this I will need a skid plate so I don't knock that whole filter assembly off while rallycrossing it.
  2. I noticed that as well after I posted it, and ran outside to check it out, turns out if was just some grease. I had put it in the hole to catch and filings that might of come off, I missed a little bit when I was cleaning it up.
  3. OK, so Here is what I'm dealing with, even with a new washer, and some gasket material cut to the right size it still leaks from the spots at the 9 o'clock, and the 2 o'clock position, both of them are lower then the rest of the area, so I sanded the area down the best I could to make it semi flat, new crush washer, still leaking from the 9 o'clock position. since I am afraid to sand any more of the block down due to possibly messing up the thread, and or make the walls of the block to thin, I decided to mess with the crush washer, I sanding it a but to conform to the block better, and guess what? it worked. I had the engine running for a few minutes with not a single leak, when before It would leak almost immediately. Now time for some reassembly, and test driving to make sure all the repairs I performed actually fixed the car. Thanks for the input guy, it was greatly appreciated.
  4. Finally got some pictures, Also @1LuckyTexan, what do you mean by the whole adapter by the oil filter? Also I am going to try and do 2 things today, try and make a gasket out of gasket material, and try a new aluminum crush washer, after I try and clean up the area a bit, I just don't understand why anybody would do this, but whatever, I can hopefully figure it out. Pictures to show what I am dealing with. Let me know what you guys think.
  5. Sorry for no pictures guys, being that I am the only Mechanic friend who is willing to help people out, I got suckered into helping people out again, but no worries, I now get to spend my day off working on my own car! YAY! Pictures inbound before the end of today.
  6. Thank you, it felt softer then aluminum, so I wasn't sure. You think it is worth my time trying to sand/grind down the area more flat then it is now? I;m pretty sure I can get my dremel in there and clean it up a bit.
  7. Check the compression before you replace any more parts, because that is obviously not working. I am running into the same issue with my car, but it is completely random, so I am thinking an electrical issue on mine, but one of my next steps is to check the compression.
  8. And that's What the Frigg?? So yesterday I started my day with my '96 impreza outback 2.2L dying on me twice when I had to go on a 50 miles trip to go to class for work. Needless to say I turned around and drove my Explorer. Now I knew the problem, it had codes for an upstream O2 sensor, and the crankshaft sensor was filled right up with oil. so I swapped those 2 parts out. Then I got to thinking, maybe I should actually fix the leak from the oil pressure sensor, so I bought a new sensor, it was $8 so I was pleased with that after taking the sensor out I found some sort of adapter piece that goes into the block with a 17mm nut on it, after a closer inspection I find that the leak is actually coming from there, Yay! So I take it off and find that there is some sort of gasket that is blown out, well I am pretty sure it was just Ultra Black, so I clean it off to find some sort of Lead, and or aluminum washer that is all messed up. so at this point I am assuming that somebody tried to fix the issue with some Black silicone. I was also looking at the block and it appears that somebody took a grinder of some sort and tried to grind the mounting area flat, which they did a terrible job of doing, I just avoided that, figured I would fill it with silicone. So I take the washer and sand it down flat again past the messed up parts, slap a whole bunch of ultra black on there, and throw it back together. 24hours later, being right now I start up the car, and it runs way better then it ever has since I've owned it, go to check for leaks, and now it is leaking like a Soviet Submarine... Now I am afraid to drive the thing due to it losing all of its oil. so my question is, what is that area suppose to look like when it is not ground down, and can I get a new washer, I am not really sure what the adapter for the oil pressure switch to the block is called, i tried various terms in google, and came up with nothing. Need some help here guys. I am a mechanic so I have the tools and knowledge to do just about anything. Thanks for any input, Harold...
  9. do the head gaskets, you can go a little ways before the belt goes, but don't push it, you will be lucky to make it ore then a couple weeks with a bad head gasket.
  10. thanks for the input, while at my buddies shop getting some exhaust work done I did notice that both o2 sensor s where oil soaked, wires and all, one had wire that was rubbed down to the copper, I cleaned it and wrapped it in tape, but I also have a feeling that it probably fell off and is now shorting, I totally forgot about this until you mentioned the o2 sensors.
  11. Thanks, I'll check it out later this week after work, it's sort of nice that both of my friends blew up their Subarus because I have a crapload of extra parts now. even a full wiring harness from the front to the back, so if I need a section of wire that's a certain color I can find it, lol. I'll keep this thread updated with what I find.
  12. Mine appears to leak a lot of oil, the top of the engine is basically covered in power steering fluid, and engine oil, I know the pump is leaking p/s fluid, but I am unsure where the engine oil is coming from, I'm going to have to re seal the engine before I do any serious Rally cross in it, the front crank seal basically pours out a quart a week. Is the crank sensor on the top of these engines, or at the front? either way I can see it being oil soaked. I will ohm out the spark plug wires, and if need be buy new ngk ones, I believe that is what I have read is a good replacement. I will also test the injectors to see if one is possibly failing, or if maybe one cylinder has more misfires then another. I know with 215K parts like this will fail. I am curious if the extra set of 1.8L injectors I have will work in my 2.2L?
  13. Hello, My 1996 Impreza 2.2L wagon has had some issues lately which I have been unable to track down, It all started with random little misfires at low RPM's under load, usually in 1st, and 2nd gear. twice it has just ran like crap with misfires all over the place, and once it has died because of this. So since no work has really been done to the car since before I got it, I replaced some common parts for a engine with 215K on it. Parts replaced with known good parts, and or new. -Coil Pack off of a '98 2.5 Forester, it ran great until the rod cap blew a hole in the block -Spark plugs have been replaced with NGK plugs. -Cleaned the crap out of the MAF sesnor, and throttle plate -Currently running no Cats to make sure that in case they where clogged, that wasn't the issue, had p0420 code in it. -The o2 sensor are good, and respond quickly, so no issues there. I am leaning to the ignition module being bad some way due to the problem just randomly happening. it does appear to happen when the vehicle goes though puddle, or it is wet outside like snow, or rain. Other then that it runs great, like today when it happened, I was going down my buddies driveway which is 1/2 mile long gravel driveway which had quite a few puddles, when I got to the end the car basically died, and took a while to re start, drove off, still ran bad, pulled off into a park, looked under the hood, found nothing, it started right back up and drove fine with no issues. kind of at a loss right now, I have some used parts off of a '93 1.8L, and my buddies Forester 2.5L, but was wondering if anybody have had an issue like this at all?? Thanks for any input, Harold.
  14. Why won't an aftermarket ECU work? all it basically needs to do is control fuel based on the readings from certain sensors. The only reason the factory ECU cannot run the car, is due to the fact that they where never programmed to receive positive pressure from forced induction... Also I don't want to do an WRX swap, I want something different..Maybe I can just run separate injectors in the intake, and have them trigger on with certain amount of boost. It would be it's own separate thing, but it could work.
  15. That's unfortunate that the ECU cannot be flashed, but the aftermarket ECUs seem to be pretty good anyway, is there anything specific I need to know about the Subarus when hunting down the right ECU? I am still not used to ECU, I am used to gm where they call them ECM, I know its the same thing though, lol. Thanks for the input.
  16. So I have got myself a turbo, and I want to put it on my 1996 Impreza outback sport. I have been tracking down parts to do this as well, exhaust flanges, fuel pump, injectors, ect. But I would like the ability to make my own ECU tune for the turbo, but really can't find anything on the net about it, so can I even use the factory ECU and flash it, or do I need a new aftermarket ECU? I know that I can just simply put a STI setup in my rig, but I like the whole custom setup idea, gives me something to do. So what is everybody suggestions for me to tune my rig? Thanks in Advanced, Harold.
  17. While I was at the fair this week I noticed that all the new side by sides, and ATVs have 14, and even 15 inch rims, with some beefy tires on them, with the lack of AT tires for 14, and 15 inch rims that would fit my Impreza (1996 Outback Sport), would these work? I mean those sides by sides are heavy, anybody else notice this? Should I try this? Maybe something like this? https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/723/50296/ITP-Ultracross-R-Spec-Radial-ATV-Tire?term=14%20inch%20atv%20tires
  18. Thank you very much for the input, although I don't 100% follow what you are saying, the pictures do help a lot, at least I see where most of my parts now go(The large black bushing, and the spring), except for the white bushing I should be OK,I'll have to do some more research for that. I have super small hands for my size, so the job shouldn't be too bad, lol.
  19. Thanks for the input, I might try the rebuild, instead of a new one. I am sure it needs a tune up, doesn't look like any of the previous owners have done much. as far as struts go apparently the last owner did them 10k ago, so they should be fine, most likely going to to Forester struts to start out with when I rally it. I finally was able to get the part number off the bags that the previous owner bought. No so sure about where the one spring went, don't see any floating around where they where in the glove box, so he must have installed it? does anybody know where all these go? Part numbers are all Subaru part numbers... 35035AA020 This is the part number for the large black bushing 35035KS010 This is the part number for the small white plastic piece 33022GA081 for the Spring I have 33022GA081 For the missing spring. Thanks for all the help guys!!!
  20. Thanks for the advice guys, I actually just got her into the garage tonight, so I will probably start on things next weekend. I can get parts at cost through work. so I'll just the knock sensor, P/S Pump, gaskets, and timing kit through work. As for the Brakes I found some PowerStop kits on Rockauto for $120 for both pads and rotors up front, and about $90-$100 for out back. so I'll probably get those. If I post the part numbers on the bags for the bushings does that help to figure out what I have, and if I need anything else?
  21. I work at a dealer, and when somebody leaves money, or any other valuable in their vehicle I ask the customer to remove it, I don't trust the porters cleaning the cars, and I don't want to be blamed for it. So that is what I do. For real though why do people leave that stuff in the open in their cars? I get a lot of weird stuff too, such as drugs, stack of money, phones, jewelry, ect.
  22. Hey Guys! Name is Harold, and I just got myself a FREE 1996 Subaru Impreza Sport with a 2.2L Engine, it's a 5 speed with AWD, so it pretty awesome. Has about 210K on it, and runs and drives really good actually. I was able to look it over on Friday at the shop when I did an oil change(no idea when the last one was even done), and found a few things wrong... End goal is to make it a rally car to beat on, and have fun. Although it was free which was awesome, it does have some issues, so I am starting with this because I am unsure really how to navigate this site so well, I'm sure I'll get better. But I would like to list the issues I have to see if somebody could lead me in the right direction. I am an Apprentice at a GM dealer so I plan on doing all the work myself, just want so guidance from some experts here, because the service manuals are not usually that good. So here is goes... - The shifter is bad to say the least, it is super sloppy, I mean really bad. the previous owner provided me with some bushings, but not really sure if I have everything I need, or if I can do better. - The left rear wheel bearing is shot, how bad is this to do? I have a press at my shop, but probably don't have the right adapters... - Front brakes are bad, what are some good economy pads and rotors everybody has been happy with? - It has 2 codes in the ECM - P0325 Knock sensor 1 circuit (Bank 1) - P0420 Catalyst system efficiency below threshold (Bank 1) Are there any common issues with these 2 codes? if not I'll just address them as I usually would. - It leaks oil BAD!!! Like real bad, It also seems to be leaking power steering fluid as well, The PS fluid seems to be the pump, and maybe even the rack. The oil is just everywhere though. - I also would like to do the Timing belt, curious how easy, and or hard that would be to do. everything else seems to be solid, so I won't worry about it for now, I just want to make it safe and reliable before I plate and insure it. I will have more questions later about upgrades, such as wheels, tires, suspension, cooling, and power adders. But I have to take it one step at a time. Thanks in advance for any input! So far I love the car, especially the significant gas mileage increase over my Daily Driver, which is a V8 Ford Explorer. That's even with me not knowing how to drive a manual car very well, lol.
