  1. If you are tough on clutches how about starting with driving lessons Sorry, I couldn't resist. I've got 176k on my original one and am quite impressed with what it's endured and it's still going strong. Energy spent in smoking the clutch doesn't get to the wheels which is where you are trying to get it. Take your foot off it. 97 Impreza OBS 2.2
  2. I'm not sure if they are the same but I became intimate with the washer motors on my 97 Impreza OBS. The front one got whimpy and finally quit. I messed with the lines and nozzles because it was still making noise. I finally got a motor and found a bloated mouse in the tank. No clue how that happened but the hair and rotting meat apparently trashed the pump. On mine the whiole tank lifted out easily after removing one bolt. This made getting at the connections much easier. The pumps on mine just have a friction fit in a rubber grommet through the tank body. The wiring connectors were tough but once I cleaned them off and lifted it enough to see them it made sense. Be very gentle as always. My back one has been a challenge as the hose running out into the tailgate keeps cracking which leads to a nice shower of washer fluid into the interior once it fills the trim voids. Great engineering. Good luck.
  3. Does it just happen when it's cold and while moving? I get amazing sounds from speedometer cable (I assume) when it is very far below zero. It is more of a whirring with clicks mixed in for a couple of miles until the grease warms up. Of course my brain is whirring and clicking at -25 also.
  4. I have a 97 Impreza OB and a 99 Impreza wagon plain jane. I bought them both new. They both have 2.2's and 5 spd's under the hood. The 97 developed piston slap fairly early on when cold (it gets very cold here in northern MN) but of course it goes away when warmed up. The 99 never has had it and has alway been much stronger then the 97. My question is... did they change the engine or did I just draw an unlucky one with the 97? Is the lower performance related to the piston slap? BTW, the 97 has 175k on it and is still as good as it ever was. The 99 has something under 50k as I recall. I like them both but it is a royal pain in the arse to get parts and I'm not sure I'd get another one because of that.
  5. The mechanic that looked at it took both lines off, filled it with fluid and ran the engine. He coverered both ports with a rag and removed it once it was running. Nothing that looked like pressurized flow from it. I don't know how the pump works or what should happen under those conditions so wasn't sure. The dealers parts guy said they never go out so I was dubious. It just quit all at once with no noise or erratic behaviour beforehand. He also said that they used that pump only on 97 and 98 models so yours might not match. None around locally new anyways so I guess I continue with the forearm building program for awhile longer. Thanks for the reply.
  6. I have a 97 Impreza Outback. The power steering just vanished one day last week. I brought it by a generic shop where they diagnosed a dead pump by an interesting looking method. After screwing around for several days they claim they can't find one. I called a local dealer parts dept. where I was told they have never sold one before and that I should call back Monday to talk to their main tech. before ordering it. No fluid loss. I don't want to order a pump if it could be the rack. Help?
