  1. Just my $.02. Our electrical guy bought a craftsman. I, too, bought a Fluke but if he's willing to buy a Craftsman I'd say that's also a good choice.
  2. It's actually the connection at one of the two connectors that plug into it. A guy i met had a spare one that I tried which made it run great. Then that night the ECU died so I plugged my old one back in and my car started up but the ECS light was off but came on while I was screwing it back up. So i jiggled the wires again and it went off. So maybe it still is some connection within the unit or maybe a wire or maybe a connector, not sure. But I do know that the light is now off and when it comes on I jiggle the wires and it goes off. BIG weight off my shoulders as I was going crazy trying to figure it out. The guy I met lives about 30 minutes from me and has turbo wagon shells all over and like 5+ brats laying around, a lifted EJ'd hatch, an all stock hatch and he said 5 more shells down his driveway that I never even saw. Two greenhouses full of engines, transmissions, cars, parts and everything plus the kitchen sink. I'm thinking of buying this '86 Brat off of him.
  3. It ended up being the ECM. Now I just have to find a good one. Just bought one that was remanufactured and it took a spoob on me that same night.
  4. '83 gl turbo here and I too have this light on. Although it is having something to do with my ignition/emissions system and since I have major bogging at low throttle but not at high throttle and has turned off when the problem magically went away a couple times. With my research ECS stands for emissions control system so could be as simple as an O2 sensor if you don't have runability issues. Check your codes from the ECM light and go from there.
  5. Hey guys. Yes I have researched this but everything I've read has had different symptoms or scenarios than mine. And I'm hoping what I've seen can eliminate the long list of troubleshooting parts. But if not I'll just keep trucking. So I have a 1983 GL turbo wagon with the ECS light constantly on no matter how I drive it (when I do). I checked the codes and came up with ignition pulse system. My symptoms are while idling the RPMs drop and I hear popping in the airbox when I touch the throttle except half throttle or more it powers through it. There's been a couple occasions where I let the car idle for 15 to 30 minutes and the light went off and the problem went away. I don't drive the car so I go out every now and again and started it up just to run it. I've only had it out a couple times and actually one time last winter the light went off and the problem went away while I was driving it. Yesterday I started the car up and after about two minutes of warming it up the light went off and the RPMs blipped down at the same time and the problem was gone. I turned the car off and back on and the light was still off with no problem. Are these specific enough sounding symptoms that can lead me to only a couple possibilities? At first I thought it was maybe a running temperature thing since it's only gone off after fully warmed up but then yesterday on a cooler day and only running for 2 minutes did it go off. Ideas?
  6. So if I'm not able to search under my engine online or at the parts store, what info should I give? I don't mind piecing together two sets, but I don't even know which sets or car info to give to get 5 right sized wires. Thanks for telling me that you had to put two sets together. At least I know that's something I may have to do.
  7. Cool thx. Yeah if you look at the photo, the wire to the far left is the coil wire. To what motor I have no idea. Definitely not ours tho.
  8. I'm on my third set of plug wires. My '83 Turbo is completely stock. First set was Iridiums from Rockauto, two were WAY too long and coil wire was wrong. Second set was Duralast, two were WAY too short and coil wire was too short. Now NGK's from Rockauto, two are too short, two are two long and coil wire is about, oh I don't know, 1/3 the length it should be. Can somebody give me any info on what I'm doing wrong, or give me a part number of what they buy?
  9. I is! Currently working out an "ignition pulse system" code. Waiting on parts now. Hopefully that'll sort it out. I'd post pics but they're all too big.
  10. I'd love to play, but before I do I'm having serious concerns my car was factory turbo. 1983 wagon turbo auto, MAF has "83 turbo" written on it, transmission has "84 turbo" written on it, I have no "turbo 4x4" decal on the side and when I looked up a list of trouble codes, it said 1983 carb and 1984+ Injected and my '83 is injected. Anybody know of a way I can make sure it's turboed from the factory? I'd rather not spend money on a car fax just to figure this out. Once I do I'll post my numbers. Thx!!
  11. Posting from Portland. Hey ya'll. Been creeping for a minute. Thought I'd become active in the community. Go BLUE!!
  12. Hey just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Nathan. I'm on Subaru #7. '93 Leggy for DD and '83 Turbo for weekend warrior.
