  1. I'm buying catalytic converters kit online and having my mechanic put it on. Two spots for sensors. Can I use universal O2 sensors on both or do I need specific sensor for each one?? It also looks like sensors online are much cheaper than at auto parts stores. Any opinion? Thanks for the help
  2. I've got a 1999 Subaru Forester with bad catalytic converters(according to CEL scan and my mechanic). The last time i had some exhaust work done for exhaust leakage a muffler shop cut one of the pipe-to-cat.convert rusted flanges and welded. My mechanic can't weld so i go to muffler shop. They want $750 to install new cat. converter. They won't consider me buying the part, at way less, and them doing the work. I get the idea that muffler shops won't do that. Any suggestions on who I might get to do that and what about eliminating the flange on the other end with a weld? That would mean removing flanges on the cat. converter?.Should i just bite the bullet and get the work done?? I hope this makes sense. Thanks
  3. I may try the split boot but i'm considering first cleaning with degreaser, etc... the exposed` joint well before putting the new boot on. Any comments?
  4. I've got a rusted out fuel filler neck. I've patched one hole but after looking at it I've decided to let a mechanic do it. Anyone comfortable with suggesting a Subaru mechanic here in Nashville? I'm new Subaru owner, first time with 1999 Forester?
  5. Newbie back again. This time I've got a gas leak. When I'm filling up I get a small puddle that appears after a few `gallons go in and it seems to be coming from filler neck. When i stop pumping gas the leaking stops. No further leaking until I go to fill up again. I am considering replacing filler neck and looked at a couple of videos but there is not one of 1999 subaru. It looks simple enough but should I leave it to mechanic? I'm thinking about buying fill neck before hand an let someone do the work. When I get under car (not on lift or jacked up) i can see where it enters rubber hose to gas tank but everything else is obscured. Sorry to keep pumping you guys for information every other day but any suggestions? I live in Tennessee and I have emissions testing which I think includes a test on the fuel line integrity from gas cap to tank. It passed fine, but when i went for first fill up the leak appeared. Thanks
  6. I'm going to try and recharge air conditioner on my 99 Forester. I've looked at youtube videos and it looks pretty simple, but I did read a note about overcharging. Apparently if you only measure low-side pressure you can overfill. Is it necessary to measure high side as well? Any suggestions on kits? Looks like I can get them fairly cheap on ebay. Any tips or cautions? I'm not an idiot but I lack the mechanical skills and knowledge that most of the guys on this site have. Thanks
  7. Former Toyota owner but just bought 1999 Forester and doing some maintenance. After watching the only youtube videos on filter replacement in 1999 Forester I got under glove box but could not find any evidence of a filter, mainly the absence of a screw, etc.. that would allow me to remove filter. Do I need to pull the glove box to get at it?I I've read that on some models including that year (1999) the cabin filter was an option. Any help would be appreciated.
