  1. I have considered upgrading my stock tranny in my 84 brat. Found me a reasonably cost effective good shaped 5spd D/R trans from the market page here on this forum. Now I've never done this but I've ghosted this site enough to know it's a good mod but can be difficult if there is no experience doing the work! I don't have a car lift but l have the tools to do the job. Out of curiosity, would it be smarter to have a recommended professional mechanic do the work or should I roll the dice and just do it myself. I'm not sweating the cost but it's the time frame I'm more leary off. Any opinions? Thanx in advance to any and all responses.
  2. Hello all! It's been awhile. Recently, I've been half assed chasing two electrical gremlins. The FIRST problem occurred a week and a half ago my dash lights quit coming on. Headlights are good - hi/lo no dimming. Dash turn blinkers blink. High beam notice comes on when switched on. Open doors and emergency brake warning lights work as well. Never used the dimmer knob so I don't know if that ever worked. My Second problem is - where in the hell is the seat belt warning relay located? Well, after five days of topic searches, I think I found my answer so I hit the local junkyard and as I'm looking for a replacement headlight switch to test my theory, an old VW hippie mechanic looking for parts comes over and tells me about how things work with his vdubs. The old man says "check your headlight relays." He believes the older soobs relay for the left side light provides power for the dash lighting or maybe it's the other way around. Never heard of this! His theory for this issue is when one sides relay is out, power backfeeds though the ground from the other sides headlight and glows the lamp dim, which by the way, is the suggestion he asked me to look for. As I stated before tho, my headlights are strong no dimming. So is this guy correct? If not, I'm also open for suggestions. Lastly, Does anyone know where the seat belt warning relay is located? Any and all responses are appreciated! Thanx T
  3. First off, am I clear on the intel that there are several 5 speed transmissions from various L line models '80-'89 and XT models '85-'93 that can bolt up to my engine without really too much of a hassle from a conversion kit? What I'm discovering is the most important detail of this project is the 4wd lever or actuator.
  4. I have ghosted this site and others trying to find the answers to my dilemma. I want to do a tranny swap. My 1984 Brat 4 speed to a 5 speed. Luckily, I have found many used L lines and XT's in my local junkyard. The first tranny I pulled had a button actuator for the 4wd on the transmission. My question is do I have to find a vehicle with the same manual configurations as my Brat? Attached is a pic of my manual configuration. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
  5. I made the flares out of fiberglass and a few other $hit.....turned out ok enuff.
  6. Didn't build the bumper I ordered it from this fabricating artist out of Tacoma. Dude does great work. I also did a Carb upgrade to a warner. This guy fabricates some excellent mod kits for soobs...
  7. Here's what I got.... Here's how it's lookin lately...
  8. Thanx guys! So, I researched Subarus with the mysterious 4th gear popout. I discovered that this is an issue with many Subaru models. Imprezas, Legacy, Foresters, Outbacks and WRX. Apparently, the problem can get so bad that it causes the other gears to start popping out of gear as well. Doesn't seem like a fix has been discovered. Any suggestions that doesn't have me opening the tranny?
  9. Background logistics... The auction was from a transportation company contracted at the Denver International Airport. How it works is this specific company that transports large containers basically have the same problems as any other delivery service or storage service. People somehow ends up losing a container, or leaving storage containers without a pickup or has paper problems that end up having the containers residing on company property for nearly a year's time. Companies will sell unclaimed containers in live auction style sales. I bought one full of amish furniture, boxes of rare books and a subaru BRAT!!!!! Title and all.....Woop! Woop! Inspection under the hood showed new parts barely used (alternator, starter, belts and hoses. Plugs looked new and the lines too. One tie rod seems sparkly new. Tires are new too! Okay so I test drove it hard upon arrival ('bout five days ago) It's manual steering.....uggg! More alarming is there is a hitch in the forth gear. Seems to randomly pop out of gear into neutral. Don't like that. Everything else seems fine.

  11. Having trouble figuring out how to ad pics. I can preview the post but where's the button to post my preview? Damn Newbie!
  12. Hello Peeps! I'm a newbie thank you! My name is Tony and I bought a storage unit for $480 in an auction that had a great surprise! Low and behold in the back of the unit hiding behind a bunch of furniture was this well preserved 1984 Subaru BRAT GL. All stock no rust. Came with the original topper and jump seats in the back. On the passenger seat there is was a custom 4" body lift kit by a company called SJR. There were 2 boxes of brand new Rancho RS5000 shocks I suspected would be for the rear. On the dash was an envelope with insurance papers and a title signed by the seller. Now how cool is that? So I joined your club and I'm gonna need help on this rebuild for sure. To those who will answer my topic post, Thank you!!! I will ghost this site as much as possible so I won't open a topic thats been covered a dozen times Thanx again! Tony
