Squeaky Pass Wheel - New Axle
jsyme replied to Tony Cortado's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Answer: Caliper Guide Pin or Caliper rod pins (4) two per side. Definitely torque down the axle nut to prescribed foot pounds- no question about it. I think all those parts are good. But I call that a shotgun approach instead of a laser or rifle shot for the one thing that actually defective. It's great for hunting birds, but terrible for keeping costs down, and I don't think that will even fix your trouble / noise. I think the one thing you haven't mentioned is either an unlubricated or otherwise defective caliper pins and/or pin boots. Maybe purchase all those other parts on your shopping list, but keep them in the bag with the receipt handy, ready for return. As you know the Caliper brake body needs to "float" on the rotor. I don't think your calipers are bad necessary based on your description. Recall that the caliper is threaded: it twists out and twists back in. -
holy crap! Engine Change GuidelinesEngine changes continue to present problems and challenges to car owners and technicians. Our recommendation is to rebuild and reinstall the original engine, transmission, and emission control configuration To fix move out of California. vote with your feet.

In-Car Timing Belt change, tips or tricks to share?
jsyme replied to Tmckinl1's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Tip # 1 just begin the project. I performed mine with the engine in bay, radiator installed, and AC installed, the skid plate installed and belt covers on. Now I know better. I think I removed the front bumper as well but I don't recall if that was to make it easier to see, or another project going on at the same time. (4 bolts and 4 bulb connections. easy-peasy) What I didn't expect was the bolts broken off and /or the stripped threads everywhere. I had to repair belt pulleys bolts that were stripped. Stripped healacoil stripped stripped stripped & stripped. I left the belt covers off because it adds SO much time to the off and on process. And the covers tapped nuts were all broken out. the whole thing was held on with "the right stuff". It's on my list of things to do after level 54001, so I just burned that list and it don't have to do it anymore. whew . time Freedom. I zip-tie'd the oil sending wire to the dip stick tube to keep it from getting zinged in two places. Results: The T- belts are little louder.. I think I took off 25% of their life span just being exposed to dirt and elements, but now I know I can replace the oil pump and water pump very easily on the side of the road if required. not that they are expected to fail, but I know I can. Definitely the hardest part was the covers, then replacing the stripped threads and finding bolts, and the more room that in there the easier everything gets.- 17 replies

Before I moved my GL wagon back into the garage, I noticed spring yellow wasps taking up residence in 3 places... front grill, door hinges, and the rusted out space where the jack goes. Pay attention and take a note of where they are during the day, and know that Colorado wasps aren't active at night. So when you begin the whole tribe will be there at once. You have two things going for you. a bright flash light will blind them and 1985 hair spray them all at once. The 10oz can of Auqa Net. Nothing else will do. (and PB Blaster is much too expensive, quit that.) Don't light a match and make a blow torch out of it.. no.. That's too much fun without a license. Don't do it in spite of all the temptation to do so. trust me it's way too much fun.. I mean way too dangerous. Think of the children. -Or- Catch them in your palm and crush them with fiery vengeance. -Or- Don't let their food source grow nearby. I mean really? Do you see the 5 acres of sunflowers next to your property? Wasps offer no value at all to nature. They are completely useless to all life. What a pest and evidence of sin after the curse. Exterminate with all the fury of a thousand exploding stars. (and hate Oracle's java too.. about the same hatred.)

91 Loyale....To keep til death do us part
jsyme replied to Nonaof4's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have to say I'm really torn. I have a 1992 loyale that I'm ready to do the 2" lift & 6 lug conversion to hubs. I have a rusted out 89GL with D/R trans that I intend move to the 92 loyale. Before this tread started, I intended to build both cars as a father son son daughter experience in the Colorado Sand Dunes, but the 89 GL needs SOOOO much work to get alive again. she's just going to be parts soon. I tried to install tinted windows last night on the rear hatch, but it ended up TERRIBLE, so I removed it. I might have $900 into both cars at this point & the 92 is my daily driver. There are some 1st Gen Legacys here for pretty cheap, fixable and tolerable shape in the 1,000 bill space. The $3000 space has the nicer cars for sure. -
Possible Ignition swith failure
jsyme replied to ivantruckman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sanity check: Turn off everything and then remove the negative battery terminal, then slowly re-add the cable and look for a spark. That spark is evidence that something is turned on. You can repeat that test with a single fuse removed, one at a time, until it doesn't spark any longer. That will give your the circuit you need to focus on. My brother had so many problems with his custom travel van he just installed a main breaker at the battery: It makes it less apt to be stolen too. yep: what idosubaru said... -
OK. I get it. strut-only-lift of 2" or 5" doesn't matter if it all gets lifted, but to lift only struts and leave the rest of it OEM stock, breaks things. check.

I'll admit I don't understand how 2 is bad and 5 is good in the rear. was the diff invertered too? Please expound here

I watched the whole time line and I'm sad there was only 7 pictures of the car after it was sold.

DadsBrat, Without seeing or hearing it, I'd suspect a clogged fuel filter <backflush it or replace it>. The 84 brat is carb'ed so maybe there is some varnish inside the carb. Run some carb cleaner with the engine idling. Ask your Dad to help you, He gave you that car because he loves you very much. He'll want to spend time with you trying to figure it out together.

WOAH! girls, girls girls... you're both pretty! Mr_Loyale, our friend Genersl Disorder is a Master mechanic that works with at Corporate level with Engineering, after having been promoted through the ranks, performed work on thousands of engines and is looking at spreadsheets of 'big data'. His opinion is legitimate because I know I can not replace the oil pump in my car either. parts are drying up. I'm harvesting axels from junk yards to keep my car on the road, before I even have anything broken! Since you (Mr_Loyale) have eyes into the engine trends, through GD's eyes, you should plan accordingly to keep your lovely car road-worthy. Example. I may love the Ford 'Model T' but if I can't get parts, then it become a monument, not transportation. I need my car too and I also love not having a car payment. I have a whole spare car though. it's rusted out for $200. ...and GeneralDistord, our friend Mr_Loyale is a ,pardon the pun, Loyal consumer of Subaru... from Seattle no less. <There are a LOT of them in this forum as well> From what I understand Colorado Springs sells more Subarus than any other dealership in the country. I know many Subaru crazy loyal owners, of which is huge equity for Subaru as a corporation. Boulder, Colorado has a Subaru in every single freaking drive way, it's almost cult like. Did you see the engine rebuild MR_loye performed? it was like museum prep for that engine. Meticulous. There is an identity there, and maybe it's not healthy or maybe it doesn't matter, but Mr_Loyal is tired of the noise about EJ engines. It's like arguing over your favorite 10mm wrench. Snap-on, Mac, crafts. harbor freight etc.. What matters is the one you use. That makes it the best 10MM wretch. Talk theory all you want, but what did you pick up and use? The Loyale? the STI? the Model T? Use it and love it, and let's not poo poo on anyone else's craftsman tools eh? -

Electrical Problems with my '87' DL
jsyme replied to 3crows's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ok. lots of data there but no context. What year, and model of car are we talking about here? any engine or computer upgrades? 1. Starting at the blower, have you tested to see that it will work by itself? blower only + 12 volts and a ground? ah you did test that directly and it works. ok. 2. Regarding the side markers, If this is DL GL Loyale the side marker is on because of the dang switch on top of the steering column. it's a left right toggle. useless. I'm sure you bumped it when swapping out the cluster. I've done it too. it will kill your battery if you leave it on. 3. fuses.. not enough data. you're all over the map here. 4. Horn, hazard and lights. ummm ground problem. ok go with that. Grab a wiring diagram for your vehicle and work through the issues. -

Such a wonderful car. They aren't worth anything in perfect condition as a trade. I'd recommend asking a local Pastor if they know of a single mom who desperately needs it. Donate it to the church as a tax write off and look forward to seeing it at the grocery store, maybe a trail head with teenager bikes attacked or just generally around town as one of life's Easter eggs just for you. -
Hey Guys! I'm a huge fan of the Dakar African race! Up until yesterday I wasn't even aware of another race going through there. I'm not sure how I missed it, but in 2013 the biggest Amateur race in Africa, similar to Dakar, Bamako runs every two years. Well an 198x Subaru GL EA82 Touring Wagon won the 2013 event! I hear them speaking French in the video: Here is the description: youtube.com : BAMAKO2013 Czech SUBARU OffROAD Team 10 MIN clip Published on Feb 23, 2013 Vítězná cesta našeho týmu závodem Budapest - Bamako 2013. Díky všem co jste nám fandili! ;-) Translated: The winning tour of our team at the Budapest - Bamako 2013 event. Thanks to all you fancied us! ;-) I made a couple of 3-monitor wallpaper to remind me what my car could be. Download them both and let me know which one you like better in the reply: 1. the Three Car or 2. The collage Note: I have three monitors that are spanned together. My Windows Start Button is on the bottom right corner of all three monitors. Each screen resolution is 1680 pixels x 1050 pixels. So to make a single picture that spans across all three I simple multiply the length times three. 5040 x 1050 as a single file. Note: If you only have one monitor with this picture set as wallpaper - Tiled, you will only see the left most part third the photo. Let me say it was quite tricky to get it under the 2MB size limit and still look decent. And it turns out I don't have enough bandwidth on this server to continue to add files. Sorry team. Here are some more links for the curious: http://www.subarudobrany.cz/bamako2013.html http://www.subarudobrany.cz/ir_14/projekt_ir14.pdf http://www.budapestbamako.org/en

Polish/Clean the loop near your head on the B pillar. If that is gummed up, that's just more resistance for the spring to overcome. It's hidden in plane sight, but never really considered. -
