  1. No, not yet. I'm looking into a few respective options, but nothing is rock solid yet unfortunately. More than likely I'll just wind up getting a "new to me," low mileage engine. Thanks for asking. Patrick
  2. Looks great bro! I can't wait to get back stateside so that I can work on my GL-10. I plan on revamping the exhaust(including getting a custom made header), among other things(*sighs at having to shell out cash for another engine*). I am also planning on getting 280Z injectors and a Walbro fuel pump. I think the limiting factor for me will be the stock VF7 as I don't plan on changing it unless I can find a spiffy deal on a TD04. Patrick
  3. Is it safe to assume that the EA81T pistons offer a better compression ratio? Patrick
  4. It might be the relay for the fan, which is under the driver's side dash. Remove the big panel. It(the relay) should look something like this. http://www.autozone.com/selectedZip,96367/initialAction,partProductDetail/initialpartType,01321/initialR,APP1127883/initialvehicleId,1083603/shopping/selectZip.htm Incidentally, you should be able to find this at your local Autozone as well. You may have to get under there with a multimeter and check for power at the connections(including at the plug for the blower). I hope this helps. Patrick
  5. That is one sweet car! Congrats on getting a good deal. Patrick
  6. You've driven a car with Tein and you didn't like it? Tein suspension(coilovers with the adjustable struts) is one of the best on the market. I bet the owner probably had them set to a stiff setting, if not the stiffest one. That is a common mistake. If you tune them right, they can run circles around the OEM suspension and still have enough damping and travel to even calm Grandma's reservations about taking that quick ride to the market. Patrick Patrick
  7. Only problem is that those engines come from the mainland. I'm on a little rock along the Ryukyu Island chain to the south of the mainland called Okinawa. Since I have been here, I have only laid eyes on 1 older model Subaru, and it was an SVX(don't know the year). I would've figured there would be a whole lot of older Subes here considering that the locals like to drive around older cars(mostly Toyotas and Nissans), but no dice. Patrick
  8. GD hit this one right on the head(and with a whole lot of detail I might add)! Most shops are run from the position of, "how many cars can we get through here in a workday," not how can we give the customer quality work on their car, no matter the age. It's more quantity instead of quality. GD is right, all of the old school mechanics have either retired, moved to management, or just gotten away from the automotive industry completely. And the sad part is, is that now with the "gas crunch" and all, and people resurrecting older vehicles because of better fuel economy, we need those old school mechanics more than ever. Patrick
  9. Best drop-in filter I have found was a Forza sport filter. It claims to flow 10% more air than the standard paper filter. I have it in my '95 Legacy GT(twin turbo) and it works great. I have kinda given up on K&N. Don't get me wrong, they make great filters, but after trying this Forza filter, I am not going back. Patrick
  10. ROFLMAO:lol: That has to be the funniest thing that I have read all day! Patrick
  11. Man, for that price, I might have to get me a couple! Just kidding. I will have to check out that site and see how much shipping is going to cost. The cheapest engine I found was about $800 with shipping to my driveway. Thanks for the info. Patrick
  12. Ah, very true. So much for the Olympics! Patrick
  13. Well, that certainly sucks. I suppose that I will get my rear in gear and start hunting for a new engine. Thank You very much for your input. Patrick
  14. ROFL! Man, some of those posts from NASIOC are straight hilarious! And I love the comment about silenced weapons. Priceless! Now you're talking my language. If there is about to be some kind of attack on the U.S. by the Ruskies, I'd be one of the first to know, considering my location and all. We all can rest assured that the Chinese aren't going to be doing anything in the near future. They have their hands full with Earthquakes, Aftershocks, and Lead-based paint for goodness sake. Patrick
  15. LOL I will definitely do that. Domo Arigato Gozaimasu. Patrick
  16. Alot of people change the fans for various reasons. There isn't anything wrong with putting in more powerful slimline type fans that move more air. The only thing that you need to remember is that the nose of the water pump shaft(where the clutch fan mounts) may interfere with electric fan mounting, as in, the fan may not clear even though it is a slim fan. Patrick
  17. That thing is SICK!!! The Good Lord knows if I had the time, a Brat, and the bank roll, I would straight up build a full size version! Kudos to the builder! Patrick
  18. Okay, well have my friend take a look, and a listen. I appreciate all of the help. It is really hard to determine the cause of a problem when you haev to use someone else's eyes, ears, and hands. Thanks again. Patrick
  19. Any ideas on the source of clatter in the vid? I would very much so like to pinpoint the problem, but like I said, there is a distance issue, so I can't disassemble it to find out. My friend is afraid to do any disassembly because he is afraid of screwing something up(he has never worked on Subarus before, so the engine layout is rather "alien" to him). As for northern Okinawa, yeah, acutually I was up that way last weekend with the family. We took the kidos to the aquarium and did some general sightseeing. Very scenic and peaceful up north. Thanks for asking. Patrick
  20. Oh Yeah, BTW, here is the video that I was talking about in case any of you were wondering. The way the guy explains what happened(please see info box in top right corner next to vid), is identical to what my friend Jason described as to what happened with my car. Patrick
  21. Thanks JWX. I wasn't too sure, just looking for some re-enforcement. I ran nothing but high grade(super unleaded/93 octane) fuel in my GL-10 when I was in Texas. When I left it in my father's care, he filled it up with regular 87 octane, because "it was cheaper." To make matters worse, I had advanced the timing a bit(can't remember how many degrees off the top of my head) after I installed my intercooler, and it has been ever since. And I know that pre-det can do some bad things to an engine. That was my reason for asking. Patrick
  22. Thanks GD. The only reason I am making a speculation as to the nature of the problem is because I don't have the car physically in front of me where I can work on it. Unfortunately for me, I am still in Oki and my car is in Texas. The friend of mine that is "car sitting" for me, was telling me of this "metallic, knocking noise" my engine is making. Well, long story short, there was a guy who posted a vid on good ol' YouTube(he says that he spun a bearing on the vid) and his car was making a similar racket. So I forwarded the vid to my friend Jason, and him and his wife both said that was exactly how my engine sounds. So of course, that brought about a whole new world of headaches. So as you can see, all I can really do is speculate at this point, and try as best as I can to prepare my wallet for whatever contingency is called for, be it expensive or not. Patrick
  23. +1 for GD 2K4 STI: The only thing that I can think of is that maybe you are talking about whether or not the fans will be sufficient to extract heat from the A/C? If so, the OEM fans should(and notice I said "should",because as we all know, anything can be improved on) work just fine. Of course, if you feel up to it, and your income allows it, you could always wire in a pair of slimline fans with all the bells and whistles, but be prepared for a long wiring session. I'm not saying that it will be hard, but I'm by no means saying that it will be easy. Patrick
  24. Another thing, I know that spinning a bearing can be caused by over-revving(which I am guilty of doing twice), but can running the wrong fuel(regular unleaded) be a contributor to the problem? I didn't run regular in it, but my dad did while I was here in Okinawa during his short "car sitting" stint. It is now in the care of a trusted friend. Patrick
  25. Well, Thank You very much for all of the replies. I would absolutely love to get a rebuilt engine from CCR, but $2000 is more than I can swing at the moment. I'm not saying that I wouldn't seriously consider it(because that 3yr/36K warranty is really appealing IMHO), but I would more than likely wind up a headline in the local newspaper if I spent that kind of money, as the wife is already not too happy about all of the mods and such that I have made to the car at present. Not to mention the fact that she is upset by the fact that I may have to get a NTM(new to me) motor. Considering that I have never disassembled an EA82 of any kind, how difficult would any of you speculate that it might be to go in and replace the bearings myself? I am mechanically inclined BTW. Patrick
