  1. The average newer car depreciates about 1000 to 1500 $ per year If you have a paid off car and you spend less that this per year you are way ahead. I am in the same position but my wife wants newer
  2. I have a 06 legacy sedan, tires and brake pads are within 9 months old. Problem I have is only with front passenger. After coming off highway / having to brake from a higher speed there is a mild burning small mostly like a rubber smell from that wheel. Yesterday I got off the highway , braked hard a few times and pulled in my drive. I could smell it, its not strong but noticeable. I cant tell that there is any more heat coming off the wheel than the other side. The hub and wheel did not feel hotter either. By the time I jacked it up and pulled the wheel the smell was gone. The tire has no marks and looks perfect. The only 2 things I could tell was 1 the CV boot was letting some residue that accumulated on the frame( wiped it off and really had no smell) 2 there seemed to be a very light residue over the caliper of grease and dust, I wiped it off that was not very smelly. Pulled the caliper back , it looked the same but the rubber seals were dry ( at least for the dirt on them). Any help appreciated. My wife always complained about the brakes and I had 2 cailpers freeze so last summer I got oem pads and NAPA calipers. And lastly she did have a defective tire explode on I95 about 2 years ago front passenger. I had the car aligned since then and the tires wear even and very steady at high speeds. thanks.
  3. The cabin air filter has been changed but its been a while so I will check it. Thank you thats a good start of things to check.
  4. I have a 06 Legacy sedan that has very cold AC when it works. Yesterday when I first turned it on it was nice cold air but after a while it gets warm, if I turn the AC off then wait a bit when I hit ON I can hear a click every 10- 15 seconds which I assume is the compressor . Occasionally after turning it off the AC will come on like normal and be nice and cold but eventually the compressor must be turning off. I was looking to charge it a month ago but when I hooked up the recharge can it showed the pressure was normal and not to add to the system. Is there any way to diagnose this with my limited AC knowledge? Thank you.
  5. Thank you for the suggestions. I have had stuck pistons before- could not move them with the C Clamp. But these backed off easy . When I drive I can hear a scraping that varies with speed and gets worse with braking, after I apply the brakes a few times it gets much louder. I had a neighbor come over and we tried several things but no change. Thanks crazyhorse and gbh!
  6. I have a FWD 92 legacy. The front wheel (passenger) was making a scraping noise on and off. When I removed the caliper I was able to compress the piston so it was not seized. Put it back together and drove it still made the noise. When I took the wheel off again I had the car in neutral and had a very hard time turning the wheel , so I thought that maybe the caliper is not fully bad but almost there. Just to check I jacked up the other side and that wheel was equally hard to turn with the trans in neutral. So for both wheels I have removed the calipers and lubed/ checked the pins and pad contact areas and found no problems. The pads have been on the car for about 2 years and have 80% left/ no wear. Are both calipers going bad at the same time, even though the pistons can be compressed? if not what else can I look at, I have no Idea of what to do. Thank you for any help.
  7. I have searched this site and Castrol, Pennzoil sites and cant find the fluid to use. The manual Castrol transmax J which they dont even list. Other than Subaru brand any others that will work. The auto store said they did not know either??? thank you
  8. I have not removed this caliper yet but the last time the piston was locked, so I am assuming it is the same problem. I will check the lines. Over the last week when I back out of the garage there has been a noise in that wheel if I have a little pressure on the brake. Thank you.
  9. No its the piston on the caliper. After I drive a bit I can hear the scraping in that wheel as I drive, then it smells like something is burning. When I stop and check it, the wheel felt like it could heat my house, very hot. I see that I replaced this caliper in May 2014.
  10. I have a 06 Legacy sedan. The front driver caliper is seized , this will be the 3rd time I have replaced this one. Other than the brand of rebuilt I am buying, last one was a Wearever through Advance Auto, Could there be any other reason why this wheel keeps having problems? Thank you
  11. Thank you. This alloy rim has been thru 3 sets of tires over the years and leaked , seems to be worse than it was 2 years ago. The shop probably will charge me at least 40 to check it out I would rather try to find a new rim and be done with it. The last tire on this rim exploded on the highway, what a mess, so I think I will call my mechanic. About 7 years ago car was hit in rear side, one rim was cracked- this one was probably on the other side. The car is still a bit crooked looking from that one.
  12. I have had this 06 legacy sedan for 8 years and for as long as I remember there was always one tire that had lower pressure compared to the rest. The car had been on 2 accidents. Over this time there have been 3 different sets of tires on it. The newest set has been on a month and one tire was down about 12 lb when I checked it today. I tried a can of fix a flat on the low tire about 5 years ago and it did not help. Should I get a new rim?
  13. I have a 2006 Legacy i sedan. The rocker for the driver window on the switch panel will sometimes move the window but has no spring to it and flops back and forth. Prices for the replacements are nuts, local advanced auto is 398 and ebay shows about 120. Is there a way to repair the switch or is it shot? I dont have a manual for this car, will I have to peel the whole door cover off? I tried a few spots and could not get it move at all, it seems glued down. Is there a good starting point to get it off? I have not been able to find any videos on youtube. thank you
  14. The front calipers on this car were replaced about 3 years ago by my mechanic. The car has about 70k miles( its an 06). I picked up a replacement at Advance Auto for 50$ and its seems ok, My brake fluid is like new on the wheel I bled. I would think that the caliper I removed was not even braking the car since once it froze and the pads wore down , it was useless. Thank you .
