  1. Thanks Skishop69, this info helps a lot. Given that my Y-pipe is a cat, any suggestions on how best (and cheapest) to get ride of it if it is clogged? I am excempt from emissions, should I buy a new y pipe and and cut and weld the headers to it? How hard would it be to cut a window in the cat, scoop out the interior and weld it back up? I am wondering what others have done or recommend. Thanks!
  2. It doesn't seem to have much of a bulge, but again it is hard for me to be certain. Anyway hopefully I get a few more HP's out of it. I already installed a Weber...we'll see!
  3. Thanks Mack, and Dave for the responses. I am getting rid of the exhaust and muffler past the Y anyway, which does include what looks more like a resonator than a cat to me. The problem is that when I drove it with just the Headers and Y, it was still moving sluggish. I am putting 2"pipe from Y back, with a new resonator and a turbo muffler. Just trying to figure out if my Y pipe is actually a cat, or just a Y. Anyone know offhand? I could cut into and find out, but I don't want to have to do the extra welding for nothing.
  4. My 84 GL hatchback has some slug butt issues. I am wondering if my catalytic is clogged, but I am not sure I even have one! How can I tell if my Y-pipe is a catalytic or not? There are no electrical / O2 sensors connected to it. Any help on this is greatly appreciated!
  5. I am definitely interested, can you send me a photo of the column, and steering wheel please? Thanks!
  6. Hey Subafreak, glad you found my post. For some reason I have been having troubles changing the posts placement. How much do you want for the column, delivered to New Mexico 87008? Do you have an extra steering wheel as well? Thanks
  7. Hello all, I have a 1980 Subaru Brat that won't steer! The splines at the top of the column where it attaches to the steering wheel are stripped, and it also seems the threads at the top of the column are stripped, and also the steering wheel itself appears to have stripped splines. Please help! If anyone has a steering column that will work (it is an EA71 if that helps), or if anyone has info on other columns that will fit, or a method to fix what I have that would be great. Thanks. Claus
  8. Turns out the intake valve is broken, and o or burnt. Either way, I figure this is why I get no compression in that cylinder. Any thoughts on whether this could happen on an engine that has been sitting for a long time, or is this a sign of a high mileage motor?
  9. Thanks again Dave. Here is a photo of the pistons and cylinders.
  10. Hey Dave, thanks for the reply. I live in New Mexico, so there is definitely a lack of humidity. The cylinder wall looks pretty clean, and the top of the piston has some black soot, but no corrosion. I could post a photo but I am not sure how to do that.
  11. I just bought a cheap spare motor for my 1980 Brat. It is an EA71 from 79, and the owner claims it was in a running vehicle years ago, and that it has low mileage (50k). When I got it home, I hooked a compression gauge to all cylinders and hand cranked the motor, no compression reading on the number 4 cylinder. I decided at that point to remove the head, and what I found was a lot of rust on the bolts that hold the head on, and the intake valve and seat chewed up with giant gaps. My question is, is it possible that this corrosion happened while the engine sat? Should I get the valve job done and use this motor, or assume that it is actually high mileage and forget about it. Any ideas or discussion are greatly appreciated, I am kind of at a lose on what I should do.
  12. I am the proud new owner of a 1980 Brat. I found that the compression on the number 4 cylinder reads at 120, the number 2 at 140, and the 1 and 3 at 135. This seemed like. Pretty worn motor, lacks power so I picked up a low mileage ea71 from a salvage yard. When I check the compression by hand cranking the motor (off the vehicle) I get 30 psi from all cylinders, except a 0 reading from the number 4. Does anyone have recommendations on what could be the cause, and how I should check and or fix before installing this motor? It has sat for 20 years on a shelf (hence the low mileage). Any thoughts or ideas are greatly appreciated, I love this forum!!!
